Great Wilderness Demon Lord

Chapter 89 Night Raid

An hour later, Xiao Yunlan's troops were the first to arrive at their designated attack position—a relatively secluded camp gate in the northeast corner of the Wolf Rong camp.

This is the border between the jackal servants' huts and the wolf barbarian headquarters' supply depot. The camp walls are made of rough wood and are not as sturdy as the front. The garrison is mainly composed of jackals, with a few wolf barbarian supervisors mixed in.

Vehicles that usually transport supplies enter and exit through this gate, leaving messy tire tracks on the ground and the snow compacted firmly.

Xiao Yunlan lay prone behind an earthen mound, squinting as he looked out.

The lantern hanging above the camp gate swayed violently in the wind and snow, its dim light illuminating only a small area in front of the gate.

Several timid figures could be seen pacing back and forth on the top of the wall; they were jackal sentries.

Further away, larger lights and the silhouettes of patrol teams could be faintly seen swaying in the wind and snow, belonging to the Wolf Rong headquarters' defense zone.

He waited quietly.

The sound of wind and snow masked other movements. It was almost three-quarters past the hour of Yin (3:45 AM), and the scheduled attack time was approaching, but there was still no movement from the left flank.

Xiao Yunlan frowned slightly. Lu Zheng's troops should have arrived. Had something unexpected happened, or had the plan been changed?

Just as his mind raced, considering whether to issue a warning or adjust the plan, faint shouts of battle and the clanging of metal suddenly came from the west side of the Wolf Rong camp!

The sound was somewhat muffled in the wind and snow, but it was enough to alert the soldiers guarding the camp gate.

The jackal sentries on the wall all peered westward, and even the wolf-like military supervisor who had been hiding in the doorway to avoid the wind came out and shouted questions.

Was it Corporal Chen? Did he launch the attack ahead of schedule? No, the direction is wrong; the sound is coming from the west, closer to the core of the camp.

Xiao Yunlan's mind raced, and he instantly understood—Lu Zheng!

He must have sensed something beforehand, or encountered a situation where he had no choice but to take action, so he simply turned the tables and created even greater chaos on the west side to draw the attention of the camp's defenders!

Sure enough, the wolf-like military supervisor at the camp gate shouted a few times and led a few jackal sentries to rush westward to provide support, leaving only a few men to guard the area.

Opportunities are fleeting!

Without further hesitation, Xiao Yunlan leaped up, mounted the wolf, drew his long sword, and pointed forward: "Break down the door! Charge!"

The fifty-four riders, like a pack of wolves that had been lying in wait for a long time, suddenly sprang into action!

Horse hooves and wolf claws shattered the ice and snow, stirring up a whirlwind of snow and mist, heading straight for the poorly defended camp gate!

The jackal sentries left behind were terrified. They only managed to utter half a mournful alarm before being pinned to the wall by a swiftly approaching arrow.

Xiao Yunlan took the lead, his long sword drawing a chilling arc in the dim light, cleaving the last Wolf Rong supervisor, spear and all, flying as he tried to close the camp gate! The heavy iron-clad camp gate was smashed open with a bang!

"Follow me and kill!" Xiao Yunlan shouted, and was the first to rush into the camp.

The cavalry surged in from behind like a tide, but did not go deep. Instead, they swept along the inner side of the camp wall to both sides, picking off tents, chopping people, and burning things in sight!

They carried oil canisters and rockets, which they specifically targeted areas where felt, hay, and timber were piled up, or tents that looked like granaries or work sheds.

The jackal servants were thrown into chaos in the military camp.

Many jackals, just awakened from their sleep, disheveled and even bare-handed, saw flames suddenly rise and iron cavalry trample the camp. Terrified, they scattered and fled, further disrupting their already sparse defenses.

Those few who attempted to resist were torn to shreds like paper under the onslaught of the elite cavalry.

With a clear objective, Xiao Yunlan led his troops straight to the junction of the Wolf Rong supply area and the Jackal area, where a lot of siege equipment parts, spare wheels, ropes and other items were piled up waiting to be transported or repaired.

Rockets and fuel tanks rained down, quickly igniting several fires. The wind fanned the flames, and the fires spread rapidly, illuminating half of the camp.

"Enemy attack! The northeast gate of the camp has been breached!"

"The Yong army cavalry have entered the camp! A lot of them!"

"Fire! Firefighting!"

Panic shouts, piercing screams, the neighing of warhorses, the clash of weapons, the crackling of flames... all sorts of sounds mingled together, exploding in the air above the camp on this snowy night.

Only then did the Wolf Rong headquarters finally react.

Urgent bugle calls rang out from the depths of the camp, and squads of Wolf Rong cavalry charged out from the direction of the main tent, attempting to encircle the northeast corner.

However, the narrow roads within the camp and the chaotic retreat of the jackal soldiers blocked the passages, preventing the wolf-warrior cavalry from picking up speed for the time being.

Xiao Yunlan saw the long line of torches surging toward them in the distance and knew he could not stay any longer.

He felled a jackal chieftain who was trying to stab his horse with a spear, and with a swing of his longsword, shouted, "Retreat!"

Without hesitation, the cavalrymen abandoned the still-burning tents and the chaotic enemy ranks, turned their horses around, and sped out of the camp gate they had smashed open with the same speed as when they came, instantly disappearing into the snow and darkness outside the camp.

Almost the instant they rushed out of the camp gate, dozens of Lang Rong arrows were embedded in the snow behind them.

When the wolf-like pursuers reached the camp gate, they saw only a vast expanse of snow and shadowy figures outside; there was no trace of the enemy.

Only the messy hoofprints on the snow were quickly covered by fresh snow.

Meanwhile, the shouts of battle on the west side had subsided at some point.

Lu Zheng's troops have clearly completed their harassment and successfully disengaged.

Xiao Yunlan led his troops to meet up with Lu Zheng's troops at the first designated evacuation point.

Lu Zheng's armor was stained with fresh blood and knife marks, but he looked excited. Upon seeing Xiao Yunlan, he said, "Captain, I have fulfilled my mission! My unit encountered a Wolf Rong patrol on the way and had no choice but to take action ahead of time. We decided to turn the tables and set fire to a few grain depots on the west side, which lured away many of the guards."

"Well done!" Xiao Yunlan nodded. "Where's Sergeant Chen?"

"As planned, he created a disturbance in the south and should have already evacuated to the second rendezvous point."

Without saying much, the two joined forces and, taking advantage of the wind and snow, quickly moved away from the Wolf Rong camp and retreated to their designated hiding place.

Behind them, flames soared into the sky at the northeast corner of the Wolf Rong camp, and the chaotic sounds of battle could be faintly heard on the wind.

This blow was like a hard slap across Hechi's face.

Inside the central command tent of the Wolf Rong army, the atmosphere was as oppressive as the deathly silence before a blizzard.

The tallow torches crackled and burned on the bronze stand, elongating and distorting the shadows of the people inside the tent, casting them onto the animal-hide-covered tent walls like a chaotic dance of demons.

Hechi sat upright in the main seat, which was covered with a complete snow bear skin, and removed his mask, placing it aside.

The old scar on his face, which ran diagonally from his brow bone to his jaw, looked particularly grotesque in the flickering firelight.

A simple leather map lay open in front of him, his finger pressed on the location representing the northeastern camp gate, where a striking red circle had been drawn with cinnabar ink.

Below the tent, on the left and right stood seven or eight Wolf Rong commanders of a thousand and a hundred, each with their armor covered in dust and their faces showing exhaustion and anger.

Further down, two figures dressed in gray-brown hooded robes stood quietly, seemingly out of place with the somber atmosphere inside the tent, yet impossible to ignore.

It was the gray-robed old man from the Four Heavenly Venerables Sect, and his follower who remained silent, his face hidden in deeper shadows.
