Chapter 12 Good Intentions Lead to Bad Results
Time passed, and when Luo Fan's legs were numb, weak, and powerless, the group finally emerged from the dense forest.
We came to a clear road.
"If you follow this road for another ten kilometers or so, you should reach a town. Take this to the local town government; it contains a letter from me that will help explain the situation you encountered in the mountains."
Calvin then took out a pre-written letter from his pocket and handed it to Jonas.
Upon hearing this, Jonas was overjoyed and quickly took the letter. After glancing at the signature, he immediately gave a standard military salute.
"It's actually you, Sir Knight! This subordinate greets you, sir!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the other two guards immediately saluted without the slightest delay.
"This humble servant greets Your Excellency, Knight!"
Luo Fan and Kant bowed even more respectfully, bending over and placing their hands on their chests, performing the etiquette of servants meeting dignitaries.
Knight is no ordinary military rank.
Jonas, a guard responsible for escorting, was no match for him. Anyone who became a knight had already stepped into the threshold of nobility, and their status had undergone a complete transformation.
They could enjoy honors and land, and the next step was to be granted a noble title.
As Luo Fan looked down, his eyes flickered, realizing that Calvin and the other two probably had an even higher status; their true identities were 'Demon Hunter Apprentices'.
Luo Fan had no idea what this identity represented, but it was certainly more powerful than that of a knight.
No need for formalities.
Calvin waved his hand dismissively and said:
"We will no longer travel with you. This letter from me will ensure your safety. In the future, try not to stay out overnight."
That's all I have to say. Let's go.
He waved his hand, signaling the group to leave.
"Thank you for your advice, sir!"
Jonas bowed again, then carefully put the letter away and led the others away along the road.
This letter was his lifeline. He had been worried about how to explain what happened last night, but now he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Calvin and his two companions watched as the group gradually disappeared into the distance, their figures shrinking smaller and smaller, before slowly withdrawing their gaze.
Just then, the aloof woman in the group suddenly spoke up: "You take such good care of that young man, but you know we shouldn't be meddling in other people's business."
Calvin scratched his head, smiled, and said:
"I like him, so I'll give him a hand."
"He was covered in the most evil energy last night, so that demonic corpse probably died at his hands. I admire his courage. The first time I encountered a demon, I was so scared that I wet myself."
Calvin casually recounted his dark past, seemingly unconcerned.
The cold-hearted woman sneered, "He's just a lowly person, how much can you really help him? Why don't you just help him regain his social status?"
Calvin chuckled, "Zoya, are you saying I'm meddlesome?"
"Erasing their memories is already more than enough. We should have left last night, but you wasted the whole night. You like being a bodyguard for mortals, but don't forget we also have a mission."
Zoya's voice was cold.
"Just take a rest for the night, don't get so angry, I was wrong, okay?"
Calvin offered an ingratiating smile and apologized.
"I'm telling you that your good intentions have backfired."
Zoya's gaze fell on Luo Fan's retreating figure, her eyes flickered, and she said:
"His emotions fluctuated greatly after he saw us this morning, much more so than the others."
"Based on this, we can infer that our presence caused him some kind of shock. The second emotional fluctuation occurred when he saw the corpse, and then when he stared at the dark sun. Throughout the process, his emotions fluctuated greatly, and his emotional fluctuations have not subsided since then."
"If I'm not mistaken, he's already remembered what happened last night."
Zoya's calm analysis was devoid of any emotion, her voice carrying a natural chill.
Calvin paused, then said, "You mean, the Forgotten Bread didn't work for him?"
"No, forgetting the bread worked," Zoya said calmly, "but for some reason, it still reminded him."
"Could it be...?"
Calvin looked up. The dark sun, which even he dared not look at for long, hung silently high in the sky. He couldn't help but wonder, "Does the dark sun have this effect?"
Strand, who had been silent all along, spoke up: "If the influence of the Dark Sun is really that great, then we and the Demons wouldn't need to hide it; the whole world would know about it by now."
"There must be a trigger, and I suspect that trigger is you."
Zoya looked at Calvin and sneered, her mocking gaze seeming to ridicule his naivety. "You shouldn't have told him so much. We should have left directly after we finished what we were supposed to do. Now your unnecessary actions have only harmed him."
"There's no need to be so hurtful. If I had known earlier, I would have left then and there."
Calvin couldn't help but smile wryly. He hadn't expected that the Forgetfulness Bread, which was specifically designed for mortals, would be ineffective on Luo Fan. Otherwise, he would have said less.
Zoya also looked up and glanced at the dark sun, her eyes filled with a deep chill:
"The appearance of the Dark Sun is gradually breaking down the boundary between us and the human world, and news about demons is spreading uncontrollably among the people."
"But hearing about demons and seeing demons in person are two different things. The former will not attract demons, but the latter will inevitably attract their hunting."
"He's just a mortal with no power to even kill a chicken. If he can't forget his impressions of demons, it's only a matter of time before they target him."
"If it weren't for your talkativeness that stirred up his longing for the Witcher and gave him an unfounded obsession, perhaps the Forgotten Bread wouldn't have lost its effectiveness."
At this point, Zoya still couldn't forget Zacharvin's stab wound. Seeing his increasingly bitter expression, she couldn't help but sneer.
"Calvin, why do you always end up making things worse?"
"Zoya-neechan, please let me go! I really didn't know it would turn out like this!"
Calvin was no longer smiling. He said helplessly, "Why didn't you stop me last night?"
Zoya snorted coldly and said nothing more.
Strand then added, "With your stubborn nature, we can't stop you."
"Am I just a low-level member of the team? Why couldn't you stop me?!"
Calvin was on the verge of tears, then sighed helplessly:
"So, I really did hurt him. Sister Zoya, I know you're blaming me for ruining that kid's life, so is there any way to make amends?"
"No." Zoya shook her head slightly and said calmly, "Perhaps you could forcibly interfere with his fate, but can you bear the consequences?"
Calvin fell silent.
"He's just a mortal, don't overthink it."
Strand stepped forward and patted him on the shoulder, comforting him, "We've done all we can. You didn't do anything wrong."
"If this is his fate, then even if we do nothing, he is destined to be entangled with demons until he dies at their hands."
"My mentor said that we should not interfere too much with other people's destinies, as this will disrupt our own destiny."
"Essentially, we've already saved him once, and that's enough."
