Chapter 14 Labor Camps
After registering their identities with the steward, a squad of soldiers escorted Luo Fan and the others out.
"Where are we going now?"
Luo Fan has truly had enough of this, and it's foreseeable that his days ahead won't be easy.
The soldiers led everyone away from Shigu City and arrived at a camp located in the mountains. The trees in the surrounding area had been cut down, and the open space had been converted into buildings for the camp.
"Damn it, this is a labor camp? It's not even in the city."
Luo Fan stood at the end of the line, feeling a sudden pang of unease for no apparent reason.
He thought he could hide in Shigu City, and that even if there were demons, they wouldn't dare to cause trouble.
However, the place we are currently in, ten kilometers away from Shigu City, is certainly not as safe as the city itself.
"Gentlemen, just leave them to me."
A man who looked like a manager stepped forward. He was strong and looked powerful. He nodded to the soldiers.
Then, his gaze swept over Luo Fan and the others, and he said coldly:
"My name is Marcus, and from now on I'm your leader. In this labor camp, you all have to listen to me!"
"From now on, you will all be part of this labor camp. Put away any improper thoughts and stay here obediently. We will provide you with food, and in return, you must demonstrate your value to Lord Nolan."
"Otherwise, don't blame me for disposing of you like trash, you useless people."
As he spoke, he took out a bunch of small copper tokens from his pocket and handed them out one by one.
After Luo Fan received it, he saw the number "222" written on it, which he guessed represented the number within the labor camp.
Putting everything else aside, this number is quite auspicious.
It is a leopard after all.
"The numbers on these license plates will become your names and represent your identities. Remember, losing these plates is equivalent to losing your lives!"
Marcus stood arrogantly at the front of the crowd like a training officer, his cold gaze sweeping over the timid faces before he withdrew his gaze with satisfaction.
Luo Fan pretended to be just as terrified as the others, and his whole body trembled slightly at just the right amount of time.
In reality, it was indeed incredibly hollow.
After four days and nights of running around, coupled with frequent hunger, he doubted he could have survived if he weren't young.
"Alright, enough talk, now follow me into the camp!"
Marcus turned around and led a dozen or so men into the labor camp. There were hardly any people left in the camp; it seemed they had all been sent out to work.
After leading everyone into a large tent, Marcus said calmly, "You must all be quite hungry now. I've prepared some food for you. Eat quickly, and then we'll get ready to work!"
"Good heavens, we have to work on our first day. They're really going to squeeze us dry."
Luo Fan thought to himself, seeing the other prisoners rushing forward, he was also pulled forward by Kant.
This tent looks like a dining hall and can accommodate quite a few people. Upon closer inspection, there is a wooden table inside.
Stacks of rye bread were piled on the wooden table; they must have been baked a long time ago, as they were no longer warm.
Next to it was a large wooden bucket filled with a pale, thin porridge, with only a few broken wheat grains visible at the bottom.
Seeing that everyone hesitated to eat, Marcus said calmly, "Eat as much as you can, that's your skill, but you can't take any of it out of this tent. This is your treatment on your first day here; from now on, it will depend on your own abilities."
"Anyone who doesn't perform well at work will never get a bite to eat or a drink again!"
With his permission, the starving convicts rushed forward like madmen.
Some had one in their mouth and one in each hand, and without caring whether they choked or not, they started wolfing it down.
It's really no wonder they're like this. Jonas and his friends have been able to eat their fill along the way, while they only get one meal a day. Plus, they've often been hungry before. Now that they're allowed to eat as much as they want, how could they not go crazy?
Luo Fan didn't care about appearances anymore. He and Kant squeezed in, grabbed two rye breads, scooped up a bowl of porridge, and squatted down to eat in silence.
Although he was also quite hungry, he dared not eat too quickly. His body had been in a state of weakness and hunger for a long time, and eating too much at once would easily upset his stomach.
Moreover, he realized that whether he could get enough to eat in the labor camp would depend entirely on how much work he could do. It would be a real loss if he got sick from a meal.
Besides, two palm-sized rye breads in one go should be enough to fill you up.
Kant, who was standing nearby, went up and grabbed two more black breads, handing one to me and saying, "Kid, why didn't you grab more? It's rare to be able to eat as much as you want. Can you finish these two?"
Luo Fan took it first, then shook his head and said, "It's definitely not enough, but if we've been hungry for too long, eating too much will damage our stomachs and intestines, and we won't be able to digest it. It wouldn't be good if we messed things up."
After listening to this, Kant thought about it carefully and felt that it made some sense.
He once indulged in a feast when he was young. Although it wasn't anything particularly delicious, it was enough to fill his stomach, so he ate until he was stuffed.
Not long after, I felt a sharp pain in my stomach, so painful that I couldn't walk.
He figured that what Luo Fan said was pretty much the same, so after thinking about it for a moment, he wasn't in such a hurry to eat anymore.
Marcus watched the chaotic scene with a detached air, a hint of disdain flashing in his eyes.
What a bunch of spineless scoundrels! They can fight like this over a few tattered black breads.
If you eat too much and can't work later, you'll definitely get a beating.
However, he was too lazy to remind him and just watched indifferently.
Every convict who comes to this labor camp will suffer this punishment. After a beating, they will all behave themselves. Only in this way can the camp's authority be fully established.
At that moment, he saw Luo Fan and Kant squatting to the side, slowly munching on black bread, and a look of surprise flashed in his eyes.
These two...
Looking at the table, there were still many rye breads left. The other labor prisoners were wolfing them down. Some of them had already eaten two rye breads in a short time and looked like they were going to continue eating.
They looked like they were going to eat it to death.
Only these two were slow and unhurried, as if they weren't hungry at all.
But judging from their thin bodies, they were clearly the type who had been chronically malnourished.
Can you still control yourself in a situation like this?
He does have some self-control.
Marcus glanced at them casually and then looked away. He naturally didn't care about the two convicts; it was just their contrast that made him take a second look.
time flies.
The black bread on the table was dwindling at a visible rate, and the convicts were all burping from overeating. The bucket of thin porridge was also completely devoured.
Luo Fan had already eaten two and a half black breads, looking listless. In the end, he forced himself to swallow the remaining half with some thin porridge.
There was no way around it; it was too bland. Having tasted all sorts of delicacies in his past life, eating this black bread now felt like chewing wax, and he couldn't muster any appetite at all.
The thin porridge had almost no flavor and was no different from plain water.
He really didn't want to eat these things if his stomach hadn't been so empty.
Thinking of this, Luo Fan sighed slightly.
"I can only endure it for now. Who knows what awaits me in this labor camp? I absolutely cannot do without physical strength."
