From a country cook to a master chef
Chapter 38: The Hunt
"Brother Lin, why don't you climb the tree?"
Hunter Liu Laohei, carrying his bow and arrows, sat on a tree branch. Seeing that Lin Jue was hesitant to climb the tree, he whispered a reminder: "Although the black bear can climb trees, for us hunters, hiding in the tree to deal with it is undoubtedly the safest and most reliable method."
"Okay."
Lin Jue nodded, and following the example of the others, found a sturdy-looking pine tree, took a deep breath, and suddenly scrambled up the tree like a monkey.
He grew up in the village and could climb anything, not just a pine tree, but even a bamboo pole standing in front of him.
The Beast-Attracting Incense had been soaked in the Spirit-Controlling Gourd Water, so even if the Black Bear was large, it wouldn't exceed 150 kilograms. Lin Jue was now quite familiar with the Spirit-Controlling Technique: Beast Taming Method. He originally wanted to try to see if he could defeat the Black Bear with the Pine Crane Long Fist under the influence of the Spirit-Controlling Technique, but after listening to Liu Laohei's words, he decisively gave up this idea.
Unlike tigers, black bears don't attack their prey in a simple and brutal way. If you lie on the ground and pretend to be dead, it will most likely curiously give you two big groin pouches.
Even if you can resist moving, it won't let you off easily. It will treat you like a toy, knead you, and then lick you a couple of times with its fiery red lips. The barbs on the bear's tongue can make you peel off a layer of skin.
However, if you encounter a hungry black bear, no matter how well you play dead, it will eat you.
Each of the five men occupied a tree, and the hunter, Liu Laohei, had a bow and arrows and could provide support to the others at any time.
The bald woodcutter, Zhang Lao Er, gripped a self-made long spear made of oak, its tip forged from refined iron, making it look incredibly sharp.
The butcher, Fatty Zheng, was holding the rope of a trap that several people had laid. As soon as Black Bear stepped on the lasso, he could be hoisted into the air in an instant.
Chen Baoguo carried an axe for protection, while Lin Jue held a slingshot in his left hand and an iron ball in his right. If things went wrong, he would be responsible for using the slingshot to blind the bear.
After a while, the hunter, Liu Laohei, with his amazing eyesight, spotted the black bear foraging for food dozens of feet away and reminded everyone to get ready.
Before long, the black bear emerged from the snow-covered jungle, its massive body moving across the frozen lake.
Its body was as large as a small hill, and its black fur gleamed eerily in the snow and ice. It stopped in front of an ice hole, crouched down quietly, and kept its huge head almost touching the ice surface, staring intently at the movement underwater.
Suddenly, a dark shadow flashed under the ice. Sensing the movement underwater, the bear was poised to strike. It slightly raised one of its front claws, and the moment the black fish surfaced to breathe, it slapped down with its claw, splashing a large spray of water. At the same time, its sharp claw had already pierced the black fish's body, firmly gripping it in its palm.
After finishing the fish, the bear knew that there wouldn't be any more fish for a while, so it turned around and went ashore. It slowly walked to a silver fir tree, and habitually stood up and rubbed against the tree to leave its scent mark.
As if it could smell the scent of the woodcutter Zhang Lao Er in the tree, it suddenly looked up at the treetop, its expression instantly turning ferocious, and let out a low roar.
With heavy snow blocking the mountains and prey rarely appearing, the black bear dug its front claws into the tree bark, pushed off the ground with its hind legs, and used the momentum to powerfully alternate its limbs upwards, propelling its massive body rapidly upwards.
"Let's do it!"
Zhang Lao Er, looking down from his vantage point, saw the black bear almost touching his face and raised his spear, forcefully plunging it into the black bear's back.
boom!
A muffled thud.
Black Bear fell in pain, splashing up a large amount of snow the moment it hit the ground. It then struggled to its feet, shook its head, and fled into the jungle.
Hunter Liu Laohei seized the opportunity, sat on a tree, drew his bow and shot an arrow that accurately pierced the heart of the bear.
With a low roar, the black bear's massive body fell heavily into a snow-covered thicket of bushes.
"It's done!"
The butcher, Fatty Zheng, laughed and jumped down from the tree, beckoning the others to come forward and check.
Lin Jue stared blankly at the black bear lying in a pool of blood.
Two-legged creatures are terrifying.
Even the enormous black bear was mortally wounded and killed in just two rounds when surrounded by several people.
"Zhang Lao Er and I clearly contributed more in this hunt of the black bear, so we'll get a larger share of the meat. Hopefully, the three of you won't mind?"
Hunter Liu Laohei slung his bow and arrows over his shoulder and placed one foot on the bear's back. "If it weren't for Lao Er's accurate spear and my skillful arrow shot, killing this big guy would have been really difficult."
Upon hearing this, Lin Jue, holding a slingshot, smiled and shrugged, offering no comment, and looked at the butcher, Fatty Zheng, together with Chen Baoguo.
The latter looked somewhat unnatural, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper, and his tone stiff: "Since we agreed to split the spoils equally after we succeed, it's not appropriate to change our minds now."
Bald Zhang Lao Er didn't speak, but silently looked at Liu Lao Hei. With various supplies in the city in short supply, he naturally wanted to get a bigger share of the meat.
Liu Laohei glanced down at the bear at his feet, remained silent for a moment, and then suddenly said, "Well then, we'll divide the meat equally as usual, but there's one condition: the bear paws can only go to me and Zhang Lao Er."
"My second brother and I contributed the most, so it's not unreasonable for each of us to take two bear paws."
"Old Liu, that's not how it works. If it weren't for the bow and arrows I provided, you wouldn't have been able to kill Black Bear."
Fatty Zheng said with a displeased look, "Putting everything else aside, without the rest of us with you, would you dare to go up the mountain alone?"
Liu Laohei and Zheng Pangzi were both unwilling to concede to each other, arguing over how much meat to divide.
Lin Jue didn't care. There were only four bear paws to begin with, and he would be satisfied as long as he could get a little bit of bear belly in addition to the meat.
Having eaten too much beef tripe and sheep tripe, he wanted to try bear tripe.
Looking at the black bear on the ground, Lin Jue suddenly had a bold idea.
Now that Hei Xiazi was dead, he wanted to try using the Spirit Control Technique to see if he could control his body.
Without hesitation, Lin Jue quietly retreated behind the four people, silently reciting the Spirit Control Technique, and his mind quickly flew into his sea of consciousness.
Within his hazy sea of consciousness, he quickly found a large, adorable creature floating near the three-clawed ink dragon, not daring to approach.
However, the next second, Hei Xiazi's figure disappeared from Lin Jue's sea of consciousness. He realized something was wrong, and as his mind left his sea of consciousness, he opened his eyes and told the others to quickly get away from Hei Xiazi.
The black bear, which should have been dead, suddenly stood up, raised its head high, opened its blood-red maw, and let out a deafening roar before pouncing on the hunter Liu Laohei, who was closest to it and was stunned.
The group was terrified, never expecting the bear to be so resilient. Lin Jue reacted quickly, leaping out of Liu Laohei's way and saving his life.
The bear missed its target and crashed into a pine tree, causing the snow to slide off in a flurry. Large snowballs pelted its head with a crackling sound, splashing up layers of snow mist as they landed on the ground.
As expected of a hunter, Liu Laohei immediately got up, took a stance, drew his bow, and shot arrow after arrow.
No longer caring about the intact and precious fur, the crowd unleashed their spears, slingshots, and axes at the black bear.
Roars filled with anger and fear echoed through the dense forest. Liu Laohei's eyes were cold as he continued to fire arrows until his quiver was empty.
As the black bear's strength gradually dissipated, its massive, upright body slowly tilted and crashed to the ground, raising a cloud of red snow.
The forest was deathly silent, save for the heavy breathing of the five men and the faint twitching of Black Bear.
