The Northern Song Dynasty returned south, seeking the truth of the Dao.
Chapter 130 Howling Wind
"Taoist Master, you..." Old Sun hesitated for a moment, then sighed and said, "Although I was deceived, it was all because of my greed."
The Taoist priest is merciful and willing to save me from this predicament. How could this old man be so unreasonable as to leave the Taoist priest alone here? I am old; perhaps I used to dream of living to be a hundred years old...
Now that I've woken up from this dream, I realize how absurd I've been. Let this old man stay here with you; it'll be my way of atoning for my sins." Old Sun's voice was earnest, and he seemed to have aged considerably in an instant.
Wang Zhenhuan felt a warmth in his heart upon hearing this. Although Old Sun had done something wrong, he wasn't inherently bad. As the saying goes, no one is perfect, especially an ordinary citizen.
He had no intention of blaming the other party, and after hearing his words, he nodded and said, "In that case, sir, please go out and wait for me. After I finish my ritual, we will return to Xiayi together."
"Well then, this old man will go out and wait for the Taoist priest. The Taoist priest, please be careful. If you cannot defeat him, you should retreat as soon as possible. Remember, as long as you live, you can always make a comeback," Old Sun said worriedly.
"Yes, old man, don't worry. I would never do something so destructive. Besides, this isn't the demon's true form, just some resentment, so it shouldn't be a big problem."
Wang Zhenhuan comforted the old man briefly before seeing him out. After closing the door, Wang Zhenhuan stood before the wooden coffin, gazing down at it. Through the heavy coffin lid, he seemed to see the innocent infants who had died unjustly inside.
Their resentment, anger, and hatred coalesced into a powerful force. Because they were stillborn and forcibly removed from the womb, they were naturally unable to reincarnate in the underworld.
This generated a great deal of resentment, which is why the resentment inside the coffin is so dense. Wang Zhenhuan took a deep breath, then channeled his spiritual energy into his arms and pushed open the coffin lid.
The moment he pushed open the lid, a thick aura of resentment rushed out. Even whispers could be heard in his ears, as if many people were speaking to him.
Wang Zhenhuan frowned, and his spiritual energy automatically protected him, causing the sounds to disappear. He carefully counted them; the small coffin contained nearly a dozen wine jars of varying sizes.
The resentment emanating from each wine jar was different; some had more, some less. It was clearly unlikely that they could be converted in a short time. Besides, Wang Zhen hadn't studied the "Scripture of Transcending Humanity."
So after much thought, there was only one solution: to seal all the wine jars. Earlier, while staying at the yamen, he had asked Master Lu to go to town and buy some talisman-making supplies.
That night, he drew some commonly used talismans, just in case. Unexpectedly, they came in handy just a few days later. He sighed and then took out a yellow talisman from his robes.
After pinching the sword-like fingers together, he began to form hand seals while silently reciting the mantra: "Supreme Lord Laozi, your influence is ever-changing. Expel evil spirits and bind demons, protect the body with profound clarity. May your spirit be pure and your mind at peace. May your three souls be forever secure and your seven spirits unyielding. By the power of the Supreme Lord Laozi, may your command be swiftly fulfilled!"
After chanting the incantation, he slapped the yellow talisman against his chest. The talisman spontaneously combusted, transforming into a golden light that enveloped Wang Huanzhen before vanishing.
The talisman he just used was a calming talisman. It can keep the mind clear and protect against all evil influences, preventing him from being affected by resentment while drawing the talisman and performing the ritual.
After doing all this, he felt that the surroundings were much clearer. Even the dim room began to brighten. He put down the bundle and took out the pen and cinnabar inside.
He took off his wine flask and poured the wine into the box containing cinnabar. Cinnabar, also known as vermilion, is named after Chenzhou, where it is mainly produced. It is also commonly called ghost immortal cinnabar, vermilion, red cinnabar, etc.
It is an essential item for Taoists in drawing talismans, performing rituals, and refining elixirs. In the "Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica," medicines are divided into three grades: superior, middle, and inferior, with superior medicines being the best, and cinnabar ranking first among the superior grades.
The book records: "Cinnabar is sweet and slightly cold in nature. It treats all diseases of the five internal organs, nourishes the spirit, calms the soul, benefits qi and brightens the eyes, kills evil spirits and demons, and long-term use leads to enlightenment and longevity. It can be transformed into mercury. It grows in mountain valleys."
Moreover, cinnabar is the very first ingredient mentioned in the book. It is described as "nourishing the blood and calming the mind, this is the foremost." This clearly demonstrates its miraculous properties. Taoist priests use two materials when drawing talismans and performing rituals: one is ink.
Secondly, there's cinnabar. It's easy to understand with ink, since calligraphy and painting have used this material for so many years. But what about cinnabar? It's simply because cinnabar is a deep red color.
It is not an ordinary red, so in the Bagua (Eight Trigrams), it corresponds to the Qian trigram, which is the color of pure Yang in heaven and earth. In Lü Zu's "Treatise on Cultivating Truth and Transmitting the Dao," it is said that cinnabar "is influenced by the Qi of the sun and becomes the head of all stones."
In the Daoist scripture *Tai Zhen Ke*, the concepts of yin and yang are compared to cinnabar lacquer and ink, with red representing yang and ink representing yin. Therefore, talismans for warding off evil are drawn with cinnabar, which is particularly effective in deterring malevolent spirits.
Since cinnabar is insoluble in water, Wang Zhenhuan always carried a small flask of wine with him, the purpose of which was to dissolve the cinnabar. Once the cinnabar had dissolved sufficiently, he lightly dipped his brush in the wine and began to write or draw on the lid of the wine jar.
He had already tried it when he fought the mirage dragon. Drawing talismans is not limited to yellow paper; anything of the five elements can be used. So Wang Zhen really planned to draw the talisman directly on the lid of the wine pot.
The talisman to be drawn isn't complicated; it's just a simple soul-fixing talisman. As the name suggests, a soul-fixing talisman is a talisman specifically designed to deal with wandering spirits. Its function is to fix the spirit in a certain place or inside a certain object.
In cases where resentment arises, it is sealed within a wine jar. Drawing talismans requires harnessing spiritual energy, which is no easy task. Even for such simple talismans.
It took Wang Zhenhuan almost an hour to finish drawing on all the wine jars, and the matter was still not over. He put the brush back and then took out a small seal from his bundle.
This seal is none other than the Wujiaozi Dharma Seal he obtained from the cave. After being ordained that day, it was stained with his blood, and the inscription on the seal had somehow transformed into his Daoist name.
In other words, this seal has now become his exclusive seal. Wang Zhenhuan took out the seal, dipped it in cinnabar, and went to the coffin. He bent down and stamped the seal on the talismans drawn on the lid of the wine jar, one by one.
As soon as the seal was applied, the talisman took effect. The resentment emanating from the wine jar vanished, sealed within it. Just as he was about to fill all the wine jars...
A sudden gust of cold wind blew in from outside, blasting open the door and windows. Old Sun rushed inside and looked at Wang Zhenhuan in a panic, saying:
"Master, what do we do? It must be him!! It must be him!!"
