Miller looked at his daughter's awkward demeanor.

Then I recalled the scene a few hours earlier when my niece Karen was completely dominated by Li Ang in the rat hole.

The alarm line in my heart, unique to an old father, instantly stretched to its limit.

A sense of vigilance arose spontaneously from him, being a fellow man.

He forced himself to straighten his back slightly from the hospital bed and warned Eve in a more stern and unquestionable tone:

"Gratitude is one thing! But I'm warning you, stay away from this kid! Don't go near him again! Do you hear me? That's an order!"

"On what grounds?"

Eve defiantly raised her small chin.

She might usually be an obedient and well-behaved daughter.

But at this moment, something that had been suppressed for a long time, something that she herself might not have fully understood, was stirring in her heart.

"I'm almost graduating high school! Can't I have my own social life? Can't I... like the person I want to like?"

"Dating is fine!"

Miller continued to stare intently at his daughter:

"But you must abide by the Catholic code of chastity! And you can talk to anyone else, but not him! Absolutely not!"

"Why can't he do it?"

Eve pressed on, unconvinced, her azure eyes involuntarily glancing at Li Ang, who stood awkwardly to the side.

"Because...because..."

Miller's chest heaved violently; he was so angry he could barely breathe.

Finally, gritting his teeth, he offered what he considered his most compelling reason:

"Because this brat is your cousin Karen's boyfriend!"

"What?! He's Karen's cousin's boyfriend?"

Eve stared in shock, her rosy lips parting slightly.

But after the initial shock, the curiosity and desire to explore that ignited in her eyes did not die out; instead, they burned even brighter.

Karen's cousin?

My cousin, who was known by my father as arrogant and aloof, indifferent to any suitors, and dubbed the "Police Station Iceberg"?

She's in a relationship?

Is the object of his attention still this Chinese-American teenager in front of him?

How old is this boy?

Have you graduated?

Eve's gaze returned to Li Ang.

Even now, her gaze was more meticulous and more naked than ever before.

It was as if one wanted to see through his handsome face and uncover all the secrets hidden within him.

It could melt away Karen's iceberg...

What is the extraordinary charm of this mysterious Chinese-American teenager?

Did he also pinch Karen's big butt as soon as they met, without even knowing her?

Won't Karen shoot me if I do this?

Or is it that my cousin Karen is actually just like me, a...

Thinking of this, Eve blushed deeply and felt a slight dampness in her skin.

Li Ang stood aside, watching the father and daughter clown around, unable to get a word in edgewise.

All I could do was give a helpless and awkward wry smile.

Miller snorted heavily, seemingly with a hint of smugness.

He clearly believed that bringing up Karen as a shield would be enough to deter his daughter, who obviously had feelings for Li Ang.

He then refocused his gaze on Li Ang, his tone slightly calmer than before, but the warning remained undiminished:

"Listen, kid, I haven't finished speaking yet."

Li Ang immediately bowed and nodded, indicating that he was all ears.

Detective Miller was given ample respect.

Miller nodded slightly and continued:

"I'll express my gratitude. I won't say much more. I, Michael Miller, am a man of my word. If you ever encounter any trouble in the future, I will do my best to help you once, within my power. Remember, just once."

Li Ang was moved and repeatedly expressed his gratitude.

Miller paused, catching his breath, before continuing:

"Also, I need to tell you that Karen and I have already rehearsed our story. We will handle the shooting incident cleanly and cover up any traces. Karen should be being interrogated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs right now, but we have prepared her story in advance. She is smart enough to handle it."

Hearing this, Li Ang felt a slight weight lifted from his heart, but his long-standing caution still led him to ask one more question:

"Officer Miller, are you sure Karen won't be in trouble? After all, this involves the lives of several Black people."

Miller glanced at Li Ang with slight surprise, then said with some approval:

"You're thoughtful, you even remember Karen. It's true, if we at the NYPD accidentally kill a black bastard, it's a bit of a hassle. The Department of Internal Affairs and those damned media outlets always swarm us like vultures smelling carrion."

Miller's lips twitched into a cold, cruel smile, a mixture of pain and cruelty.

"But this time is different. That old black guy almost sent two NYPD detectives to the morgue, and one of them is still lying here half-dead. Now the entire police system is united against this enemy, and their guns are all pointed at the same enemy."

"Those bureaucrats in the Ministry of the Interior are shrewd enough to know which side to take and when to shut up. Anyone who dares to contradict them or cause trouble for their own people at a time like this can forget about working in this system in the future, I guarantee it."

After listening to Miller's straightforward, insightful, and thorough analysis of the interests at stake, Li Ang finally understood.

The last bit of anxiety in my heart dissipated.

He nodded, indicating that he understood.

"Alright, I've said everything I needed to say, and thanked everyone who needed to be thanked."

Miller looked as if he had exhausted all his strength, and a deep sense of fatigue crept onto his brow.

He closed his eyes, waved his uninjured hand impatiently toward the door, and shooed them away:

"Get out of here if you have nothing to do. Don't get in my way. Remember me, stay away from my daughter! And be nice to Karen too. If I find out you dare to betray her, or dare to make a move on my daughter... I guarantee you'll regret ever being born. I mean what I say."

"dad!"

Eve called out coquettishly, her expression a mixture of displeasure and shyness.

Then her gaze toward Li Ang became even more complex and profound.

It was churning with emotions that even it itself might not understand.

Li Ang could only offer another helpless, bitter smile.

He politely said goodbye to Miller on the hospital bed, and then forced a polite smile at Eve beside him, saying goodbye.

After leaving the room, Li Ang quickly found Fiona's ward at the other end of the corridor.

She had just been wheeled back from the dialysis room by the nurse, her eyes closed, her chest rising and falling slightly with her breathing.

Hearing the door open, Fiona's eyelashes fluttered, and she opened her eyes to see Li Ang.

A hint of surprise flashed across those gray-blue eyes that always carried a touch of melancholy.

"Li Ang? It's only... a little past five o'clock, right? Why didn't you sleep in a bit longer?"

"Tomorrow is Saturday, so there's no school."

Li Ang walked to the bedside, naturally tucked the blanket that had slipped to the side for her, and sat down on the plastic chair next to her.

"I tossed and turned in bed, unable to bear leaving you here alone. I decided to come and check on you; it actually made me feel more at ease."

Fiona's eyes quickly reddened, and her nose felt a little sore.

A long-lost feeling of having someone to rely on quietly welled up from the deepest, most tender part of my heart.

She reached out her hand, the one without the IV needle, and gently grasped Li Ang's hand, which was resting on the bedside table, with her cool fingers.

Her hands were weak, so thin you could feel the knuckles.

"Thank you, Li Ang..."

Fiona's voice choked with emotion:

"I should be the older sister taking care of you, but now... It's all my fault, I'm the one who's dragging you down."

"Hey, Fiona, hold on."

Li Ang gripped her cold hand tightly with his other hand, and naturally reached out to tuck a few strands of light golden hair stuck to her forehead with sweat behind her ear.

"There's no point in saying things like that. If it weren't for you, I would have starved to death under some bridge years ago. Don't worry, I'm a man now. I'll take care of all the problems from now on. Stop overthinking and go back to sleep."
