33. Blackwood won the MVP award.
Since they knew the gun was out of bullets, it was no longer of any use, so Dorian decided to let it make the most of its last moments.
Fortunately, I had already relied on the "Secret Words Long Poem" beforehand, and at this moment my body instinctively began to move.
Taking advantage of the brief moment when Blackwood was hit in the face by a pistol, Dorian picked up the scroll of the Commentary on the Wheel of Fortune from the floor and quickly rolled under the long table.
In that instant, he saw Granger lying on the ground, barely alive, his bloodshot eyes filled with hatred and rage. Granger stared at him, his right leg moving slowly, his blood-stained lips opening and closing slightly, as if trying to give some instruction.
Although it was only for a moment, Dorian, enhanced by the "Secret Poem," still saw clearly what he wanted to express with his superb dynamic vision:
"Beneath the wall there, bump."
Dorian continued rolling under the table, and in the direction Granger indicated, he slammed the wooden reel of his scroll against the wall.
whoosh-
The next second, he saw a hole suddenly appear in the opposite wall, from which a bunch of large blades shot out.
This was the mechanism that Blackwood had envisioned being triggered by his side.
Dorian picked up a large knife, stood up abruptly, and instinctively slashed at Blackwood.
Blackwood, who had been knocked to the ground by the silver pistol, was filled with horror and a belated fear.
Unlike his previous superb acting skills, this time he was genuinely panicked.
Why wasn't he affected by the "heterodox manuscript"?
"You, how come you can still move freely? This is impossible!" He staggered to his feet, clutching the pistol that had just knocked him down.
"Fine, fine...you two, get him!" Blackwood laughed angrily.
Lily and Polina, who had been frozen in place like statues, suddenly trembled slightly. The sluggishness binding them seemed to loosen a little due to the violent shock Blackwood had received.
Although she had not yet fully regained control of her body, Polina used all her strength to suddenly raise her foot and kick Blackwood hard between the legs.
With a groan of pain that even Dorian found unbearable, Blackwood's body involuntarily bent over.
Even so, the opponent's tenacious willpower actually enabled him to block Dorian's large blade with his gun in time, only to make a loud clang!
Lily seized the fleeting opportunity. Although the lingering feeling was still there, it had subsided considerably. She grabbed Blackwood by the collar and threw him out.
Blackwood was slammed onto the table, and then, for some unknown reason, the chandelier on the ceiling suddenly fell down, along with a heavy iron cage.
The iron cage fell, smashing a large hole in the conference table and trapping Blackwood inside.
"Cough cough cough, you guys, I really have to control you..." Blackwood held onto the cage bars with one hand, while the other hand unconsciously groped for something on his body.
"I bet you're looking for this, aren't you?" Dorian held the scroll upright, grabbing one end, while the other end fell to the ground with a clatter due to gravity.
Blackwood didn't pick up the "Commentary on the Wheel of Fortune" that fell to the ground after Lily kicked him over at the beginning. Even after he suddenly lashed out, he was still too busy showing off to pick it up. In the end, Dorian picked it up.
At this moment, the awkwardness that had been lingering on Lily and Polina completely disappeared. Lily first straightened the silk hat on her head and smoothed out the wrinkles on her suit, then walked over quickly.
During the fight just now, her top hat hadn't fallen off at all.
Dorian couldn't help but wonder if it was welded onto her head.
On the other side, Polina, now without her hat, was yelling, "(Britanian profanity), you (Britanian profanity), do you really think we are...?"
"Stop! Stop! Stop! Don't step on that floorboard! Don't step on it!!" Blackwood suddenly shouted inexplicably from inside the cage.
"I'll stomp on it, I ...!" When she heard him say not to stomp on it, Polina, who was in a fit of anger, completely ignored him and instead raised her little foot and stomped on the floor a few times.
In an instant, a small opening appeared in the wall on the right, and countless arrows shot out from it, all of them hitting the cage. Blackwood was instantly riddled with arrows from the trap he had set.
He didn't even have time to let out a scream. His eyes were filled with resentment and bitterness. He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he just fell helplessly to the ground, his eyes wide open, dying with his eyes wide open.
"This..." Faced with this situation, even Lily, who is usually very composed, was starting to lose her composure.
Originally, she only planned to bring Blackwood back to headquarters so that the experts skilled in interrogation could give him a thorough "interrogation".
Well, that's how he died. He died right in the trap he had painstakingly set up.
Even though she had participated in countless special operations, she had never seen such a dramatic situation.
"Big sister, I, I didn't mean to, I didn't expect him to do this..." Polina realized that she was probably in trouble.
"Then, what do we do now?" Dorian slowly rolled up the reel that had been hanging to the ground, looking at Blackwood, who was covered in quills in the cage, and felt a wave of fear.
This was the ending he had originally planned for himself and his group.
But fate played a darkly humorous joke on him.
"What about that guy named Granger? Is there any hope for him?" Lily asked.
"No, they're dead." Polina quickly went to check and soon gave a disappointing answer.
……
After retrieving the "Commentary on the Wheel of Fortune" and their only loot, the silver pistol, the three silently teleported back.
Dorian felt that the operation was like a farce, as if it had yielded some results, yet also as if it had yielded nothing at all.
On the positive side, Dorian's security crisis was physically resolved, and an illegal phantom book was recovered. On the negative side, the clues about the phantom book's smuggling have now been completely cut off.
Wait a minute, this doesn't really matter to me, right? This wasn't even a case I was investigating.
Looking at it this way, haven't I gained a lot?
"So, how exactly did you break free from his control in the first place? Did you discover what the truly unique aspect of this illusionary book is?" Polina couldn't help but ask on the way back.
After this "Heterodox" fantasy book returns, it will undergo a series of procedures, including professional identification, grading, and numbering, before being properly stored.
"Because I don't believe in God," Dorian replied naturally.
"No way?!" Polina looked at Dorian again, her eyes even more shocked than when she had just been forcibly controlled. "You really don't believe in God? How have you survived until now without the protection of any deity?"
So this little girl is a fanatical believer; I hadn't noticed before.
Dorian, thinking this through, prepared to respect the other party's beliefs, but Polina's words choked him up:
"The gods are real, you know. Without their protection, how did you survive the [Tide of Nothingness]?"
