49. Idiot son
At the Crimson Court in Rose Town, Toris and his companions brought Norn and Karentin there, with Austin following behind to prevent them from causing trouble.
Compared to the "colosseum" where Norn was previously tried, this courtroom was much simpler.
The courtroom wasn't large, but its style was completely different from that of Basel. There were no public galleries like a circular pit; there was only a high platform for the judge to stand on and two chairs.
Two wooden railings separated two areas for spectators to stand in, and a statue of Bimbisara stood behind the judge's platform.
In fact, this small courthouse is the only one in Rosetown, not because Rosetown is particularly safe and there are usually few criminals.
Rather, it's because matters involving ordinary townspeople are not worth mentioning here. Every knight or soldier under Duke William has the power to judge, and trials can be held anywhere. This court is for the nobles.
"Why does this courtroom look different from the one I saw in Bathurn?" Norn asked Austin.
"You mean the Holy Tribunal? That's actually a procedure that the Aro Church requires before punishing criminals. The criminal must confess his crimes under the Holy Emperor's gaze or have a judge state the facts, so that the Holy Emperor knows that the judgment is not without reason."
In addition, a large number of spectators would be present to verbally abuse and slander the prisoner, subjecting him to both physical and mental punishment. This treatment was generally reserved for the most heinous criminals. Rose Town also had such a place, though it hadn't been used very often.
Aroism?
Norn remembered that this seemed to be the state religion of the Kingdom of Eton, and there was another theocratic country in the east of the continent, which was the birthplace of the Ayrdom and the residence of Emperor Dante.
Just then, a man wearing a scarlet silk shirt and with long red hair walked in, followed by two servants.
Toris and the others, along with Karentin, immediately knelt on one knee. "Your Grace, Duke."
Austin immediately stepped forward, and William frowned upon seeing her: "Weren't you in solitary confinement? Why are you out?"
"I was just worried they'd do something reckless." Austin then told William what had happened and about her relationship with Norn.
William glanced at Norn after hearing this, his serious expression remaining unchanged: "I understand, you can go back now."
After Austin left, William walked up to the judge's platform and said to Torres:
"Sir Torris, you sent someone to find me in such a hurry, so please speak first."
"Yes, sir." Torres gave a slight salute. "My son, Hopis, was dining with his friends at 'Meat Paradise' today when this shameless gentleman stole his purse. When he was discovered, he became enraged and beat my son and his friends."
As he spoke, Hobbes entered the courtroom with his two bruised and battered henchmen and a few tavern patrons, and stood in the spectator stands outside the fence.
"Karentin was also present at the time. Instead of stopping this bullying of the townspeople, he protected the perpetrators because of their past relationship as adventurers."
"Is it true, Karentin?" William looked at Karentin.
Karentin: "Only part of it is true. First of all, I certainly didn't fulfill my duty to judge the perpetrator. If I could do it all over again, I should have joined Norn in beating his son to a pulp! Because according to the law, thieves should be crippled!"
Torres: "What do you mean? Are you saying my son stole money?"
Norn: "I was having a meal when Hopis and his cronies tried to steal my purse. Even after I discovered it, they wouldn't let it go and even accused me of being the thief. I couldn't take it anymore, so I resorted to violence."
Torres: "You're talking nonsense! I am a knight appointed by Lord William. My son grew up in a privileged environment. Putting aside whether he would steal or not, even if he were to steal, he wouldn't steal your pittance."
"Oh? Is the salary of a Knight of Toris really that high? Even 26 gold coins is nothing to you?"
"Twenty...six gold coins!?"
Torres was shocked. He only had about 20 gold coins a month. Who would believe that his son was carrying so much money around?
He turned back and glared angrily at Hopis, that damn bastard who hadn't mentioned the kid had that much money.
But Hopius remained calm, replying incoherently, "Sir, he's lying! He didn't have 26 gold coins on him at the time. He only did it because he saw the three gold coins in my pocket... Ouch!"
Hopis spoke too quickly, pulling at his wound and wincing in pain. Meanwhile, his henchmen and shills from the tavern rallied behind him in support of Hopis.
"Quiet!" Duke William slammed his fist on the table, then ordered his servants to bring several bottles of healing potions for Hopis and the others to treat their injuries.
After drinking the medicine, Hopis's facial wounds healed quickly. He happily and quietly gave his father a no-brainer, secretly admiring his own intelligence.
He believed that the 26 gold coins were all of Norn's wealth. After checking with his two henchmen, he learned that they had received 8 and 12 gold coins respectively for being beaten. Norn could not produce any more money to prove that he had no motive to steal.
With so many people backing me up and speaking on my behalf, the advantage is mine!
But Torres wasn't so optimistic; he knew his son's intelligence perfectly well.
If he hadn't said anything about the 26 gold coins, I could have barely helped Yuanyuan. But now that this idiot has lied to Norn, I shouldn't interrupt anymore, otherwise there's a risk of conflicting testimonies.
Damn it, you idiot, what nonsense are you spouting! Just stay put and be a pig's head!
A few beads of sweat appeared on Torres' forehead as he nervously watched his simple-minded son, hoping he wouldn't make a mistake.
"You mean I'm lying, that there aren't any 26 gold coins?" Norn asked Hopis with a smile.
"You have so much money? Look at your clothes, they're so tacky. You'd be lucky to have ten silver coins in your pocket."
Hobbes was smug, feeling that he was smarter than the scholars in the city.
"Then watch carefully." Norn untied the money pouch from his waist, pulled the thin string, and poured it onto the table.
The golden river crashed onto the table, shattering into droplets that tinkled and fell to the ground, each sound a slap across the face of Torres and his son.
Hopis's eyes widened in disbelief. There must be at least sixty or seventy gold coins here. Even he, the son of a knight, had never seen so much money!
The proud look on his face vanished in an instant, and he looked at Toris pleadingly.
Torres' face was completely red, his jaw muscles bulged from the effort, and his eyes were blazing as he stared intently at his idiot son.
