Full-Time Magister: The Ruler of Wind and Rain
Chapter 26 The Hunter's First Step
At 10 a.m. the next morning, at the agreed location in the northern suburbs of Shanghai, Wang Yu found a truck covered in mud. The truck driver, Lao Huang, got out to greet "Master" and waited for Wang Yu to sit in the passenger seat before climbing into the truck himself.
Before leaving Anjie, Lao Huang was quite talkative, introducing the route to Wang Yu, with whom he was working for the first time. But after passing the last outpost in Anjie, he immediately straightened his back and drove with extreme vigilance, scanning his surroundings through the rearview mirror.
Influenced by him, Wang Yu also became serious. However, a mage's perception is much better than that of an ordinary person. As long as Wang Yu stays vigilant, he will almost certainly detect any potential threats earlier than the driver, Lao Huang.
Throughout the journey, Lao Huang remained extremely tense, and Wang Yu soon understood why he was so nervous: on the hillside, there was actually a tiger-like monster with camouflage fur!
In this magical world, without sufficient strength, survival outside the realm is virtually impossible, and this applies to both humans and beasts. In other words, almost every slightly larger beast encountered in the wild possesses at least the strength of a servant-level demon, and an ordinary mage without special training would have almost no chance of survival if encountering a servant-level demon alone.
However, for a mage like Wang Yu with rich combat experience (question mark), fighting such a demon alone is not impossible. But it's better to avoid trouble. If the tiger doesn't attack first, Wang Yu certainly won't harass it.
Things didn't go as planned. It looked like a hungry tiger, probably a grass tiger. This beast was eager for the two pieces of fresh meat in the large, portable self-service tin can. It leaped down the hillside, trying to tear open the truck's cab from the side.
"Accelerate, try to shake it off!" As Wang Yu spoke, the experienced Lao Huang had already slammed the accelerator to the floor. The truck, dragging its heavy cargo, accelerated considerably, avoiding the grass tiger's first pounce.
The turf tiger, having failed in its attack, growled angrily, startling Lao Huang so much that he almost lost control of the steering wheel.
However, this enormous wild hawk-meat seems unaware that a hawk-meat that breathes on people casually is loved dearly.
"Wind Blade - Thrust!"
Wang Yu opened the car window, conjured a wind blade, and hurled it fiercely at the tiger beast that was pouncing again. He deliberately chose the moment when the tiger beast was in mid-air and unable to control its posture, aiming his weapon at the tiger beast's eyes.
"Get it!"
A month of diligent practice paid off; with a single strike, the wind blade destroyed the tiger beast's eyes. The grass tiger, its eyes damaged and its movements distorted by pain, failed to reach the truck while leaping through the air.
Wang Yu threw several more wind blades from the car, almost all of which hit the tiger's vital points. The last blade even hit its head, penetrating directly into its brain and killing the grass tiger instantly.
"So my magic level is pretty good," Wang Yu thought. "Should I start fighting demons and leveling up to make money sooner? No problem, it's not too late to start now."
After signaling Lao Huang to stop the car, Wang Yu got out and examined the tiger's carcass. To be honest, he didn't really know which parts of a demon were valuable, let alone how to dissect it. So he and Lao Huang worked together to move the tiger carcass onto the truck and drove away.
The rest of the journey went smoothly, without encountering any more troublesome demons. Upon arriving at the coastal outpost north of Qidong City, Lao Huang drove the truck to the military warehouse, while Wang Yu went to ask the sentries if they bought demon corpses. The sentries quickly summoned a military magistrate in charge of logistics. The magistrate determined that the tiger beast wasn't rare, and there weren't any valuable bones or other interesting materials. The tiger claws, teeth, skin, and bones would be sold separately; the other parts were worthless and inedible, so they were simply discarded. In total, Wang Yu earned 30,000 yuan from the tiger beast, plus a few hundred yuan in change for Lao Huang.
Waving goodbye to the outpost, Wang Yu headed into the woods four or five kilometers away. This forest contained a medicinal herb that, while not particularly rare, was used in large quantities: *Cynodon dactylon*. Referring to the guidebook provided by his employer, Wang Yu repeatedly picked the tips of the herbs in the grassy undergrowth, an action that reminded him of the days he spent picking chili peppers on a farm in Mozambique to cook for his project team colleagues.
Wang Yu abruptly cut off his thoughts of the past. Before entering the forest, he had already conjured a wind trail beneath his feet, holding it back without releasing it. At the same time, the domain effect of the wind magic gave him a more acute perception of his surroundings. Without visually noticing anything unusual, Wang Yu secretly put his hands behind his back, condensed a water blade, and then suddenly hurled it!
The grass in the distance swayed a few times before settling back down. Wang Yu used his water blade to cut a long branch from a nearby tree, went over, and parted the grass. Sure enough, he found a serpentine monster with its head severed. The snake looked less than a fist thick, but its magnificent markings told Wang Yu that if he were to be bitten by it, it wouldn't just be a matter of losing a piece of flesh; he might lose his life.
Startled, Wang Yu quickly cast a Water Protection spell on himself and then released wind trails in multiple directions to let the wind element guide his way before he dared to cautiously continue gathering herbs.
……
Two days later, Wang Yu had almost completely harvested the stalked grass in the forest, and his spatial ring still contained six snake skins and a pile of snake meat. During lunch on the first day, Wang Yu had looked up some information and discovered that the most valuable parts of this type of snake demon, called the Bright-Ringed Black Snake, were its fangs, skin, and surprisingly, its meat. It was said to be especially delicious in soup, and Wang Yu, who had brought a camping pot, couldn't resist trying it. To his surprise, the taste was indeed quite good. So, from the Bright-Ringed Black Snakes he encountered afterward, he only kept the fangs and skins, storing all the meat on the durable ice block in his spatial ring. He used this to improve his meals every day for the next few days; otherwise, who could stand eating compressed biscuits every day?
The bounty for the Curly Sprout Grass had upper and lower limits on the quantity of goods to be delivered, but the lower limit was one kilogram and the upper limit was one ton, which showed that the employer actually wanted to find someone to collect as much grass as possible. Wang Yu spent two days collecting more than ten kilograms of Curly Sprout Grass, which was worth tens of thousands of yuan. Anyway, he put it all in his ring and placed it on the ice to keep it fresh.
The next task, the third one, requires hunting an amphibious sea monster called the Silver Crawfish at the beach. According to the information, although it's called a fish, it likes to come ashore to bask in the sun at low tide and then drift back to its burrow with the rising tide. The client wants the Silver Crawfish's gallbladders, while the other parts belong to the hunter. The bounty is three gallbladders. Wang Yu initially thought it would be simple, but once he actually got his hands on it, he realized that there was a reason why the fee was so high.
"Oh, stop yelling at me! I'm just running away, okay...?"
Wang Yu's first encounter with the silver crawling fish ended in his defeat and escape. The information indicated that there were some silver crawling fish on the beaches near Qidong, but it didn't mention any large groups of them! The key point is that although the silver crawling fish, as servant-level demons, are not very agile after coming ashore, their water-spraying attack ability is not diminished much. Wang Yu believed the rumors in the information and thought that the creatures' combat power was indeed greatly reduced after coming ashore. As a result, he was unexpectedly overwhelmed by a group of silver crawling fish's laser-like water-spraying attacks. He had to use Wind Track, Water Defense, and Black Stone Shield to barely escape.
Damn it, we have to find a way to get revenge!
