Full-Time Magister: The Ruler of Wind and Rain
Chapter 80 Fishing Operation
Raindrops pelted the pale blue safety barrier, splashing up tiny ripples, but they were not stopped and continued to fall.
Wang Yu put away the leather-covered notebook. The extremely tiny cyan wind blade at his fingertips quietly dissipated. A very faint smell of ozone remained in the air.
He leaned forward. His soaked collar clung to his neck. He lowered his voice to a whisper, making sure only Zhan Kong could hear him.
"On the way here, I kept observing my surroundings."
Wang Yu's gaze swept past Zhan Kong's shoulder, across the busy crowd within the barrier. A stretcher was carried past, blood mixed with mud dripping onto the concrete floor.
"There were a few unnatural gazes. Not the kind of gaze demons have on their prey." Wang Yu stared at Zhan Kong's profile, which was wet with rain. "It was more like someone had been spying on us. And their positions kept moving inside the military mage's defensive line."
Zhan Kong's facial muscles twitched violently. His eyes, bloodshot from exhaustion, widened instantly, a dangerous glint flashing deep within his pupils.
"A mole."
Zhan Kong squeezed out those two words through gritted teeth. His voice was hoarse, like two rough stones rubbing against each other.
Wang Yu nodded. He raised his hand and wiped the cold rain from his cheek.
"I don't believe there isn't a traitor in the city that the Black Vatican could cause such a commotion in Bo City and lead a large-scale attack on the city by demons," Wang Yu said calmly.
Zhan Kong clenched his fists tightly at his sides, his knuckles cracking from the force. He turned his head, his gaze sweeping over the magic association staff maintaining order, the military mages guarding the barrier, and the family forces and hunters struggling to hunt demons. Among these people desperately trying to survive, was there a mole from the Black Church?
Zhan Kong was unwilling to believe it, but his duty required him to doubt anyone worthy of suspicion for the sake of Bo City's safety.
"Do you have anyone you suspect?" Zhan Kong withdrew his gaze. He suppressed his anger.
"Yes, but there's a lack of evidence. And with a formidable enemy at hand, even if I told you who I suspect, you couldn't possibly arrest them in public; it would be too demoralizing." Zhan Kong wasn't completely calm yet, and Wang Yu had to help him think things through.
"So what are your thoughts on continuing the search for irrefutable evidence?"
"I want to go fishing," Wang Yu said, surprising everyone. "As far as I know, that Commander-level Winged Wolf has been lurking near the Silver Trade Building, seemingly after the Holy Spring. Do you think the Black Vatican might also want it?"
Zhan Kong's eyes showed a hint of understanding: "We only just found out that Mo Fan has drunk all the Earthly Holy Spring water. You mean, we're using Mo Fan as bait to lure out a traitor within the Black Church?"
"That's not all. You'll definitely have to lead your men to fight the Winged Wolves before reinforcements arrive. With all the mid-level mages in the military mages fielded, the traitor will probably be quite daring. The question now is, how long until the reinforcements arrive?"
Zhan Kong glanced at his watch. "The first batch of Sky Eagle Mages will arrive in four hours. Fortunately, the military region is currently organizing a large-scale training exercise, and they are not far from Bo City. Otherwise, they would have to wait until at least tomorrow."
"That's perfect," Wang Yu smiled slightly, "This is the perfect time for fishing."
The reinforcements arrived much earlier than in the original story, which Wang Yu believed was probably due to his reminder to Old Man Bao or Tang Yue.
Just then, Mo Fan, agitated, rushed out of the crowd, grabbed a staff member who was registering the wounded, and glared at him, demanding, "Are you sure the Inscription District wasn't evacuated? Are you sure you didn't see wrong? Are you sure they didn't evacuate???"
"Over there in the inscription area... no one has evacuated yet," the staff member stammered, his voice trembling.
Mo Fan abruptly released his grip. He swayed and took half a step back.
"Inscription area..."
Mo Fan turned to look outside the barrier. That area had been completely submerged by the black tide of demons. The towering flames appeared extremely weak in the rain. That was the direction of the Inscription Girls' Middle School, where Mo Fan's half-sister, Ye Xinxia, studied.
Seeing this, Wang Yu and Xiang Zhankong exchanged a glance in a very short time.
Wang Yu walked over and placed his right hand on Mo Fan's shoulder. Mo Fan's muscles trembled violently from his fingertips.
"Calm down," Wang Yu uttered.
"How can I stay calm!" Mo Fan abruptly shook off Wang Yu's hand. He pointed to the darkness outside, his fingers trembling. "My sister is inside! She can't even walk! She's all alone in a place like that!"
"Mo Fan." Zhan Kong stepped forward. His tall figure blocked Mo Fan's view of the outside of the barrier. "The military mage no longer has the strength to organize a rescue team. Going out now is just suicide; you won't even be able to break through the encirclement of those slave-level demons."
"I'll go even if it means my death!" Mo Fan's fire magic began to spiral out of control. Crimson flames spread beneath his feet. The surrounding rainwater was instantly evaporated by the intense heat, rising into plumes of pungent white mist.
"Who do you think you are? A mere brat who just reached the mid-level!" Zhan Kong suddenly raised his voice. His voice, infused with wind magic, completely drowned out all the surrounding noise. "How many demons can you kill out there? What can you change? You'll just become their food!"
Mo Fan was stunned. He stared intently at Zhan Kong, his chest heaving violently.
Wang Yu pretended to pull Mo Fan back, but actually whispered a few words in his ear.
"Pretend to argue, rush out, and fish out the mole."
Mo Fan's pupils contracted sharply. He reacted incredibly quickly. The anger on his face intensified tenfold in an instant. His already distorted facial muscles became even more ferocious.
"You're talking nonsense!" Mo Fan pointed at Zhan Kong's nose and cursed, spitting everywhere. "You have the nerve to be our head instructor? You're a complete waste! You can't even protect a little girl! I'll go save her myself! I don't need your help!"
The surrounding military mages and students were all drawn to the commotion. Dozens of eyes turned towards them simultaneously.
Xue Musheng ran out from the crowd. He tried to grab Mo Fan's arm from the other side.
"Mo Fan, are you crazy! That's killing an air force commander! Calm down!"
"Get out of my way!" Mo Fan shoved Xue Musheng away with tremendous force. Xue Musheng stumbled back several steps and landed hard on his backside in the mud.
Mo Fan turned around and rushed towards the exit of the barrier without looking back.
"Stop him!" shouted a military mage on guard duty, drawing star trails with his hands.
"Get him out of here!" Zhan Kong roared. His voice shook the barrier's light screen.
He turned around, his back to the direction Mo Fan had left in, and strode towards the command tent.
"No one can stop someone who's looking to die! Heed my command!"
The mid-level military mages who had been standing motionless on both sides suddenly changed their military posture, and a chilling aura instantly filled the howling wind.
"Slay the Winged Wolf, it's a fight to the death!" Zhan Kong shouted once again, his voice seemingly filled with murderous intent.
"Slay the Winged Wolf! It's a fight to the death!"
"Slay the Winged Wolf! It's a fight to the death!"
………………
Just as Zhan Kong was gathering mid-level combat power to encircle and annihilate the Winged Wolf, Mo Fan broke through the pale blue light barrier without any hindrance. His figure was quickly swallowed up by the boundless torrential rain.
Wang Yu leaned against the cement block. He closed his eyes.
The Star River Magic Artifact spun wildly in his chest. Streams of cool energy surged into his spiritual world through his meridians. He greedily extracted the free elements in the surrounding air, replenishing the nebula that had been depleted in the recent battle.
Ten minutes later, he opened his eyes, a sharp, bluish glint flashing in them. A bluish wind trail flickered beneath his feet, and Wang Yu, in a blurry afterimage, silently slipped away through the blind spot at the edge of the barrier.
