Chapter 23 The Battle of a Novice Mage
Spiritual and spiritual practice? Lynn was genuinely intrigued.
These two abilities are crucial for mages. The former enables one to focus, enhances control over magic, and strengthens willpower and resistance to mental shocks.
The latter tends to connect with the outside world; those with strong spirituality are often able to comprehend more of the mysteries of magic, thereby gaining many magical powers.
For example, communicating with spirits, controlling magical creatures, establishing connections with mysterious beings, and so on...
Seeing that Lynn seemed somewhat interested, Aldolf chuckled and said, "We at Blue Tower focus on cultivating inner strength and have mastered the most advanced meditation techniques, which is the most suitable path for mages."
So he's from the Blue Tower? Lynn pondered to himself. The Yellow, White, and Blue Towers hold the highest status in the Kingdom of Asia. The Golden Tower seeks wealth, the White Tower pursues innovation, and the Blue Tower focuses on inner cultivation; each has its own strengths.
It's really hard to choose...
At this moment, Patton glared at Aldorf, puffing out his beard, and said, "You old bastard, you're shameless! Trying to steal someone right in front of me?"
Barton originally planned to use the mission to investigate the Corruption Cult as a test for Lynn. If he passed, he would give him a second-circle spellbook to help him advance to the level of a novice mage, and then he could legitimately bring Lynn into the White Tower Academy.
After all, the minimum requirement for recruiting members to the Mage Tower is to be a novice mage. Given Lynn's current status as an apprentice mage, he can't even get a class badge, so it would be against the rules for him to force his way in.
Colin Town is located in a remote area and is close to the Monster Forest, so few mages are willing to go there. Since he was transferred here to work, he has not seen many promising talents over the years.
On a whim, I exchanged a few words with Aldorf.
Aldolph seemed used to his colleague's bad temper and wasn't annoyed. He just gave Lynn a deep look.
"This isn't up to the two of us to decide; it all depends on what the child plans to do."
Hearing him say that, Barton also glanced at Lynn.
Lynn immediately said respectfully to Barton, "I have always heard of the fame of the Blue and White Towers, but since Mr. Barton has helped me so many times, I will follow your arrangements."
Upon hearing this, old man Patton's face immediately broke into a wide smile, his white flesh creased into several wrinkles.
"Alright, alright," he patted Lynn on the shoulder, "Aren't you here for the magic combat training? I'll take you up now, come with me."
With that, he led Lynn to the third floor of the Golden Tower, with old man Aldorf following along.
The three gates were guarded. Upon seeing the two elders of the Magic Association arrive, they hurriedly bowed respectfully, and after verifying the professional badges issued by the association, they quickly opened the gates.
The Golden Tower in Colin Town covers a large area, with the upper and lower levels having basically the same space, but the layouts are different. The three-story circular area is divided into three fan-shaped sections.
Barton stood in front of the central staircase and introduced to Lynn: "The two combat training arenas on the left and right are for beginners and advanced levels respectively, and the one in the middle is the individual training arena, which has specially made dummies."
At least at the beginner level? So, as an apprentice mage, does that mean he can only practice on dummies in the personal training ground?
Seeing Lynn's hesitant expression, Barton laughed and said, "Do you intend to challenge someone of a higher level?"
His joke suddenly jolted Lynn awake.
Lynn nodded firmly. "I want to try."
Upon hearing this, old man Patton slowly frowned, thinking to himself, "Alas, he is still a young man after all; his temperament and experience are still lacking."
Leaving aside other professions, the classification of mages is very clear.
The ring position is the only standard; each level must be two ring positions higher than the previous level.
As an apprentice mage, Lynn could only master first-level magic at most, but a novice mage could at least master second-level, or even third-level, magic!
This gap cannot be bridged simply by talent or hard work.
"Interesting." Aldolf stroked his long beard, looked at Lynn meaningfully, turned and walked towards the beginner training ground on the left, while beckoning Lynn to follow.
"What are you doing?" Barton hurriedly caught up to stop him, not wanting anything to happen to the future seed he had his eye on halfway through.
Aldorf said calmly, "What are you afraid of? Anyone who participates in the battle will be automatically given [Absorb Magic] in the training ground, so he can't be hurt."
Barton was well aware of this rule; what he feared was not Lynn getting hurt, but rather being frustrated.
It is common for young monks to be proud and arrogant, and it is also very common for them to become discouraged and give up when they encounter setbacks.
"Don't worry," Aldolf glanced at Lynn, who was observing his surroundings, "this boy is much more determined than you think. This little thing shouldn't be a problem for him."
With that, he called to Lynn and walked toward the training ground on the left.
Normally, the third floor of the Golden Tower is very deserted. The senior training ground is rarely used, and only the beginner training ground occasionally has a few people.
Today was alright; including those watching, there were four people in total.
"These four must all be novice mages, right?" Lynn guessed. Judging from what he'd seen before, people below the novice level weren't allowed in here. He was only able to get in smoothly thanks to Barton and Aldolf.
As far as he knew, the entry-level professional corresponded to a 2-star adventurer, which was the level of Sirin, Liam, and Urshi.
Entry-level mages are even more valuable. If they master more and more diverse spells, it wouldn't be surprising if they could perform at the level of a three-star adventurer in a team.
Barton has just given a brief overview of the training ground rules.
Most matches are one-on-one or two-on-two, with few restrictions.
Upon entry, the training ground will automatically grant duelists the [Absorb Magic] buff of the corresponding level.
Once the [Absorb Magic] barrier absorbs enough magic damage, it will break, and the person will be immediately eliminated.
The winning condition is that one side is completely eliminated.
At this moment, the two players were locked in a fierce battle.
A middle-aged man in a dark blue robe stood at the edge of the dueling arena, chanting incantations rapidly. He waved his short staff, and four missiles radiating azure light shot towards his opponent like meteors.
Is this a level 1 Magic Missile? A level 1 Magic Missile only has 3 missiles, this should be level 2...
shhhhhhhh!
Missiles were launched in rapid succession. At this speed, only a shield spell that could be cast immediately could withstand it. Moreover, according to the rules, the [Absorb Magic] barrier is equivalent to the contestant's health bar, so prioritizing health preservation is undoubtedly the safest choice.
Lynn looked intently at the other young man in the silver-white shirt, wondering how he would deal with the sure-fire magic missile.
The young man was not tall, but he had a lean and fit build, and was one of the few mages who showed signs of physical training.
Seeing the magic missile flying straight towards him, he made no attempt to create distance or cast a shield. Instead, he lowered his body, exerted force with his legs, and rushed towards the blue-robed man at high speed.
It was as if he had been hit head-on by a magic missile. With four loud bangs, a seven-colored magic barrier flashed across his body, indicating that the damage from the missile had been completely absorbed.
The dueling arena was limited in space, and he arrived in front of the blue-robed man in the blink of an eye. He swung his long staff out with his right hand. The blue-robed man seemed to be prepared. Just as he finished chanting the incantation, his body was enveloped by a stream of air, and his figure suddenly turned to one side, floating half a foot away.
Second Ring [Levitation Technique]?
The white-robed youth was about to swing his long staff into the air when suddenly, the dark brown staff, which resembled a long stick, bent and softened.
The young man flicked his wrist, and his staff instantly lashed out like a whip, coiling around the blue-robed man's arm like a snake. With a forceful tug, he pulled the man back with him.
The man lost his balance and fell to the ground. The young man in white seized the opportunity to snatch the short staff from his hand, and then grabbed his throat like a chick, preventing him from chanting the incantation.
"..." Lynn was speechless. This was no ordinary mage war; it was a warrior beating up a fragile mage in close combat.
