Chapter 29 Encountering an Attack

They spotted their target in less than 100 meters.

On a path faintly visible amidst the tall trees and shrubs, a short, green-skinned dwarf leans against a tree.

She looked extremely unwell; purplish-black spots appeared on her exposed skin, and the veins on her face were bulging—it was truly horrifying.

More importantly, her legs were pierced by dark purple thorns, and pus and blood seeped out from the wounds in a semi-congealed state.

The adventurer's attire... Lynn used "magic wave" to probe beforehand and found no ill intent.

After exchanging glances with his teammates, he confirmed that there were no other traps nearby.

The group then dispelled their concealment a short distance away, pretending to be passing by by chance, and approached the green-skinned dwarf.

She was already very weak. When she heard the noise, she listlessly raised her head. Only after she saw the people's clothes did her eyes light up a little.

"Help...help me, my teammates...they've all been..." Her voice was broken, and she coughed as she spoke.

"Please don't get agitated, let me stabilize your injuries first!" Eli made a move to step forward and treat her wounds, but Lynn stopped him.

He exchanged a glance with the halfling Liam, who immediately understood and stepped forward to check on him.

"Miss, may I have my eyes on your adventurer's badge?" he asked, trying to be as friendly as possible.

The green-skinned dwarf was taken aback by these words, and her face immediately turned somewhat ugly. She understood that these people were doubting her, but she could also understand their caution.

She reached out with difficulty to her waist, but her arm muscles cramped. Seeing this, Liam carefully helped her remove the badge.

The Adventurer's Badge has a special magical mark that can be easily identified even by non-spellcasters, and this magical mark only appears when the owner is nearby.

This was also the work of the White Tower Society, to verify identities and prevent the adventurer's badge from being stolen.

"No problem." Liam nodded to Lynn after checking.

He then withdrew his hand from Eli's side.

The half-elf girl quickly walked up to the green-skinned dwarf, checked his injuries, and then took out a bottle of green potion from her staff.

"This is the antidote, please drink it." Eli held the bottle to her lips and helped her drink it little by little.

Lynn was somewhat surprised by Eli's thoughtfulness. Magic such as detoxification and purification could only be learned at least at the second level of the magic circle. It seemed that Eli had made a lot of preparations in advance to prevent similar situations from happening.

After all, low-level adventurers like them wouldn't spend a lot of money to buy potions they might not even need.

The antidote was very effective, firstly because the potion Eli bought was of good quality, and secondly because the poison in the dwarf was not particularly difficult to treat.

Afterwards, she cast another [Recovery] spell, quickly stabilizing the other party's injuries.

"My God!" The green-skinned dwarf stared in astonishment at his mostly restored body, unable to close his mouth. "Healing magic? Are you a healing mage?"

She looked at Eli with eyes that seemed to have discovered a panda-turned-beastman, and kept expressing her gratitude to him.

"My name is Tana, I am a forest dwarf, and my profession is a wanderer."

Once she calmed down, she began to explain her experience to the group.

"Our team of four originally came to hunt goblins on the outskirts of the Whispering Forest, but we were suddenly attacked last night."

"The opponent was a lone individual, yet incredibly powerful. He could command monsters and even control my three teammates; we were virtually powerless to resist..."

Tana's face turned pale. "I managed to escape, and then I realized he was trying to take my teammates away, so I kept my distance and followed him. Little did I know he had set a trap beforehand..."

Lynn, as if struck by a thought, pressed further, "Are there any spellcasters among your teammates?"

Seeing Tana shake her head, he fell into deep thought. Based on the previous situation, the Corruption Cult had been targeting spellcasters. Could it be that this time it wasn't someone from the Corruption Cult?

Lynn hesitated. He wasn't without a sense of justice, and if he could, he would also like to rescue Tana's teammates, but that wouldn't align with their purpose for this trip. If he rashly intervened, it could very well put their team at a disadvantage.

"However..." Tana suddenly frowned and said, "That guy covered his face, but his words and actions were a bit strange, he was crazy, and he was very aggressive towards one of my female teammates."

Lynn's heart stirred slightly, and she gestured for her to continue.

"He initially seemed to mistake my teammate for someone else, acting very wary, even... fearful! And then..."

"What are some distinctive features of your teammate?"

Without hesitation, Tana replied, "She is a pretty blonde woman."

Upon hearing this, the group suddenly understood what was going on.

In other words, the mysterious person who attacked Tana's team in the middle of the night had met Charlotte Fenrir?

And it's highly likely that they've had a conflict.

After discussing with several teammates, Lynn quickly made a decision.

"Tana, we will continue deeper into the Whispering Forest to track down the attacker. If possible... we will rescue your teammates, but you cannot come with us. Let's return to town as soon as possible while it's still early."

Tana was just an apprentice wanderer; following them would not only fail to provide enough help, but would also distract them from protecting her.

Lynn knew that the Wanderers had many ways to hide, and given her current condition, it wouldn't be difficult for her to safely return to Colin Town before dark.

Tana clearly understood this as well; the depths of the Whispering Forest were not a place for a one-star adventurer like her.

On the other hand, this suddenly appearing team seems to be quite powerful, with a rare healing mage and another...

She glanced at Eli, then looked intently at Lynn, finding the young mage remarkably calm and collected, quite unlike his youthful appearance.

As for the dwarf race, which is most famous for its skill in making magical items, she could see the special features of Lynn's staff. The aquamarine alone could buy several days' worth of a house in Colin Town!

Tana nodded, thanked Lynn and the others again, then picked up her luggage that had fallen nearby and turned to head towards the edge of the forest.

"Let's hurry and get going," Lynn said to the group.

According to Liam, they would reach a safe area near the depths of the Whispering Forest before dark, set up camp and rest, and then officially enter the depths of the forest early the next morning.

Along the way, they discovered traces left by the mysterious man who had kidnapped Tana's teammates, which also led deep into the area and were in the same direction as the place where the orc warrior Gray had previously met Charlotte Fenrir.

This is a good thing, meaning they don't need to take a detour to look for clues.

During his journey, Lynn gradually came to understand something.

According to Eli, Charlotte Fenrir is a druid.

As far as he knew, unlike other mage towers where mages made up the majority of members, a significant portion of the spellcasters in the Green Tower were druids.

This aligns with their philosophy of "worshiping nature and harmony".

The corrupt cult was called "traitors of the Green Tower" by the old man Patton.

In other words, the reason why Charlotte Fenrir lost contact is most likely related to the Corruption Order?
