Chapter 53 Monster Restaurant
Inside the private room on the second floor, Lynn looked around at the interior decoration with some surprise.
The walls are covered with carefully pieced-together wood grain, the carpet is dark gray wool, the sofa is made of walnut wood with silver trim, and even the dining table in front of us is made of a single piece of marble, with white and a hint of blue pattern.
The room was filled with a light, fruity aroma, and the windows facing the street offered a good view yet still provided a sense of privacy. The colors of the magic mineral lamps embedded in the ceiling were clearly carefully chosen...
Everywhere you look, you can see its luxurious and extraordinary nature.
This is a restaurant located in an inconspicuous corner of the town of Collin, with only the words "Devil Tongue" written on a wooden sign at the entrance.
If Luke hadn't brought him here, he would have had no idea that Colin Town had such a place.
Lynn couldn't help but wonder if such an upscale restaurant could really stay open for long. She doubted that many locals would frequent it.
"No doubt about it, this restaurant has always been quite popular," Luke explained, noticing his confusion.
He crossed his legs, casually resting his left hand on the back of the sofa, while holding a small glass of amber-colored pre-dinner drink in his right hand, swirling it and gesturing to Lynn to have a taste as well.
It tastes good, with a slightly sour flavor and a sweet aftertaste.
Luke smiled and continued to explain to him: "The main customers of this Demon Tongue Restaurant are three types of people. The first is businessmen, most of whom have a partnership with the Golden Tower."
"Secondly, the nobles. The noble lords of Luo'an City, and even further east, love to travel around and enjoy the local delicacies during this season."
"As for the third, it's spellcasters like us. As far as I know, that old guy Barton quite likes coming here."
Lynn silently glanced up at him, thinking to herself, "This wine shouldn't be enough to make someone drunk..."
He seemed like a completely different person all of a sudden, speaking casually and acting frivolously, losing all his previous upright and reserved demeanor.
"Are you curious about my current performance?" Luke asked with a smile.
Lynn was indeed curious, after all, Luke was likely the most powerful spellcaster he had ever encountered.
Not to mention he has many other titles.
What Lynn couldn't understand even more was why, even if he was a person with a huge contrast between his inner and outer self, he would deliberately show it in front of her.
"Personally, I think this shows sincerity," Luke said with a smirk. "Showing a more authentic side of yourself to future partners can quickly improve our relationship."
"Cooperation? Mr. Luke, what do you mean by that? I don't quite understand..."
Lynn blinked sincerely, putting on an innocent and naive look befitting his age.
He had no recollection of ever agreeing to join the Golden Tower.
"Oh? So you're not interested in what I just mentioned about Eli Frey?" He widened his eyes and asked, feigning surprise.
"I thought that someone with such a close relationship like you two would care more about each other..."
Lynn nearly spat out the aperitif she had just drunk. "Close relationship? Who told you that?"
Before he could finish speaking, a familiar, plump figure appeared in Lynn's mind.
"Of course it's Barton," Luke said, shrugging innocently. "I thought he was Miss Eli's teacher, so what he said must be reliable."
Sure enough, I didn't expect Mr. Barton to be such a gossip in private, but it's not entirely surprising...
Lynn smiled. "Miss Eli Frey and I are just employees. I was asked by her to protect her and help her find a friend who suddenly lost contact in the Whispering Forest."
And, she was also the first member of my magic network, a debtor who owes me three things… he added in his mind.
"However, Miss Eli is a generous employer, and I am happy to continue working with her. Therefore, the more information I have about her, the better."
He was a little afraid that Luke would really stop there; Lynn was indeed somewhat interested in Eli's matter.
After all, once she joins the Magic Network, their future collaboration will be indispensable.
Luke smiled but remained silent, tapping the stone tabletop lightly with his finger adorned with a magic ring, seemingly waiting for Lynn to continue.
“Mr. Luke,” Lynn said helplessly, “I’m just an ordinary person who has just been promoted to a novice mage. I don’t have much to offer you. However, I will seriously consider your invitation to join the Golden Tower.”
Luke nodded in satisfaction. "Okay, let's eat and chat."
He rang the copper bell beside him, and several waiters who were waiting outside the heavy wooden door pushed the door open and walked to his side. They bent down to put down the silver trays they were carrying and then lifted the lids one by one.
In the blink of an eye, the marble tabletop was filled with beautifully plated and tempting food.
"You may all step back now. I will personally introduce the dishes to this young man."
The waiters all left, and Luke pointed to the identical steaks in front of them. "Can you tell what kind of meat this is?"
Lynn looked closely and saw that the steak, pan-fried with red wine sauce, had a slightly brownish surface. He cut a piece with his knife, and the cross-section was blood red.
"This must be beef, right?" He looked at Luke, who laughed and said, "Try it."
Lynn, whose appetite had already been whetted by the aroma of the food, hesitated for a moment before slowly cutting off a small piece of meat and putting it in her mouth.
The meat is firm and chewy, and because it is soaked in red wine, it is not dry. It tastes slightly bitter at first, but becomes more fragrant the more you chew it.
"What is this?" It's definitely not beef. This stuff is much harder than beef jerky, but the cooking technique must have been superb, bringing out its best qualities, which is why it's so amazing.
Luke took a sip of red wine and said with a smile, "This is demon wolf meat."
The demon wolf... Lynn's chewing tongue suddenly stopped.
Then, images of the dark-haired, enormous monsters with emerald green eyes and sharp teeth from the Whispering Forest appeared before his eyes.
A sense of resistance naturally arose, but the delicious taste in his mouth made his body move involuntarily, chewing and swallowing.
Lynn smirked, "I never expected wolf meat to taste like this."
He had heard that some adventurers, due to insufficient preparation or unexpected encounters, would use common beast-like monsters such as dire wolves and giant rats as substitutes for food.
"So, this is a monster restaurant?" Lynn understood somewhat.
"That's right." As if to reward Lynn for guessing correctly, Luke actually served him a bowl of milky white soup himself.
The posture reminded Lynn of a scene where she was having dinner with her elders at home.
Is this pigeon soup? Lynn blinked; he hadn't expected that people here also liked to make soup.
"The lark is a very precious ingredient, and this is the best way to preserve its nutrients," Luke explained at the right moment.
"This kind of monster is very beneficial to male abilities."
"...Thank you, but I'm young and don't need it."
