Chapter 57 The Sea of Consensus
"What level is this new spell you discovered? What type is it?"
"First ring, energy-shaping category," Lynn replied immediately.
Luke nodded and stood up. "Perfect timing. The magic assessment room is empty right now. Come with me, I'll assess you."
The two then walked together toward the magic assessment room. Along the way, Luke explained to Lynn in detail:
"The process of applying for a magic patent is not complicated, but there are certain thresholds, which depend on the amount of magic knowledge the discoverer possesses."
"If the discoverer only happens to have access to a very small amount of magical knowledge and can occasionally successfully cast the spell, it is impossible to make a spellbook that can be read by people, and therefore they are not qualified to apply for a magic patent."
"More often, the discoverer has mastered a small amount of magical knowledge and successfully digested it, and can use the magic skillfully. With this knowledge and experience, they can make low-quality magic books. At this time, they can apply for a magic patent, but the patent fee is generally not high."
"Of course, although it is rare, there is a third possibility: the discoverer has a basic grasp of the relevant knowledge of the new magic and quickly reaches a level of proficiency. In this case, the discoverer can use it to create medium-to-high-quality spellbooks, and the value of such a magic patent would be much higher."
So there are so many intricacies involved... Lynn silently digested this information.
My [Frost Ring] was directly inherited from the magic book, so I should be able to master it. I just don't know how the association will evaluate it.
The magic assessment room is much smaller than the examination room, and it doesn't even have a window; it's practically a cramped, secret room.
Luke activated the magic mineral lamp, and with its dim light, Lynn was able to roughly make out the layout of the room.
The four walls, along with the floor and ceiling, were covered with intricate magical patterns. Lynn felt dizzy after just one glance.
"These magical runes are too early for you right now. Don't focus on them too much," Luke said with a smile, a step behind.
He led Lynn to the depths of the room, to a simple stone recliner, also covered with intricate patterns.
He clicked his tongue and said sarcastically, "Those old guys at Blue Tower have hopeless taste. They say primitive materials are more likely to awaken spirituality. I think they're just too poor to understand..."
Seeing Lynn's scrutinizing expression, he changed the subject and pointed to the stone chair, explaining, "This is a magical device invented by Blue Tower. Through it, you can connect to a mysterious space they call the 'Sea of Consensus,' where your evaluation process will take place."
Lynn asked with some curiosity, "In what form will I enter that Sea of Consensus—spirit, body, or something more mysterious, an astral body?"
Luke helplessly spread his hands and said, "I don't know. If you ask me which year's Bordeaux is more mellow, or how to easily kill a two-headed ogre, I can tell you the answer immediately, but you've asked the wrong person about those boring academic studies on Blue Tower."
"However, I can assure you that you can rest assured. It's filtered and absolutely safe, although each entry is slightly different. Once inside, just focus on demonstrating that new magic, and the Sea of Consensus will draw a clear conclusion based on your performance."
Lynn nodded. "There must be an upper limit to the number of magic rings this device can test, right?"
He was curious whether the so-called "Sea of Consensus" could be affected and destroyed by magic, which could provide evidence that it was either an illusory space or a mysterious area that actually existed.
"This device in Colin Town can only test low-level magic of the third ring and below. If it reaches the fourth ring level, you will need to go to the Magic Association in Roan City or the Blue Tower. As for its upper limit, I don't know."
Lynn nodded slightly, not surprised by Luke's answer.
But he began to think about something else. It was normal that the White Blue Tower did not have its own mage tower in Colin Town. The Golden Tower was established purely for the purpose of monster trading.
However, in Assassin, the Three Towers Alliance needs constant checks and balances. Barton and Elder Aldolf, as members of the Mage Tower of the same level as Luke, were transferred from Roan City after the establishment of the Magic Association in Colin Town.
"Hehe, actually, this device is usually operated by senior members of the Blue Tower. But after Aldolf heard that I had recruited you into the Golden Tower, he looked at me with a face as if I owed him a hundred gold coins. I really couldn't handle it..." Luke said, raising one corner of his mouth.
Lynn didn't detect any annoyance in his tone; instead, she thought he was quite smug.
"Lynn, I'm looking forward to your evaluation results. Go now."
Lynn no longer hesitated and quickly lay down on the stone chair. Unlike its rough and simple shape, it was surprisingly comfortable to the touch because it conformed perfectly to the curves of the human body and even made him feel soft.
Luke placed his palm on a recessed area and infused it with magic, causing the stone chair and the magical patterns throughout the room to glow with a faint blue light.
Then, Lynn felt a refreshing stream flow into his brain, and he unconsciously relaxed and quickly became immersed in it.
It was like a feather slowly drifting down from a great height, falling into the deepest, darkest place.
When Lynn opened his eyes again, he found himself in a strange space.
The place was unusually empty, like a blue sea, yet calm and without a ripple.
He looked in all directions and saw the same scenery. When he looked up, he found that the sky above him and the ground below him were mirror images, reflecting the same blue color.
He took a few tentative steps and found that the space had hardly changed at all, as if he were standing still.
It's strange, I seem to always be at the same starting point, without any direction or distance. No matter which direction I go or how far I go, there will be no change at all.
But his consciousness remained unaffected; he was perfectly lucid and still remembered Luke's instructions.
Without wasting any more time, Lynn quickly inscribed magical patterns in his mind, forming a spell that condensed into the "Frost Ring".
As ice crystals condensed and ice rings appeared, this strange space called the "Sea of Consensus" suddenly changed.
In the illusory space, countless frost flowers are born and die, sometimes appearing as rotating ice rings cutting, and sometimes condensing into thousands of sharp blades that freely shuttle and slash.
Lynn felt his spirit being touched by these sights. He tried to draw upon the incredibly surging ice elemental power permeating this space, but immediately felt an immense resistance, like an ant pushing a boulder.
"This space seems to change according to my performance. Luke told me to focus on demonstrating the Frost Ring, so he must know this. Could it be that these spaces are the concrete manifestations of the magical knowledge I've acquired?"
With this in mind, Lynn focused all his mental energy on controlling the magic.
Compared to the myriad magical phenomena that filled the sky, his first-circle magic was rather rudimentary. He controlled the ice ring to fly straight up, and in the blink of an eye, it almost merged into those strange ice flowers and frost swords.
He had a sudden inspiration and interrupted the magic, causing the Frost Ring to shatter immediately.
In an instant, snowflakes began to fall from the sky, but Lynn, who was below, could see them clearly.
What they weren't snowflakes were countless enormous ice rings that shattered and immediately reformed, falling in a deluge. Their rapidly spinning edges were like thousands of sharp blades, capable of shredding even the toughest dragon.
Even Lynn herself felt a chill run down her spine.
I wonder what rank of magic such a grand spectacle should be?
As he was thinking this, he suddenly felt a strong sense of detachment. After a moment of dizziness, he found himself lying back on the stone chair.
Luke was staring blankly at the room filled with an intensely deep, almost purple-blue light when he saw Lynn wake up. He immediately said excitedly:
"Absolutely perfect! Lynn, your mastery of this new magic is simply flawless!"
"If you reach this level of mastery, you might even be able to go further in the near future, modifying and inventing based on this magic. This is much more difficult than simply discovering magic, but it is also more meaningful!"
