Chapter 67 The Dharma Master's Report
Lynn took out the business card that Luke had given him, which was specifically for subscribing to the Mage's Gazette.
This is a semi-transparent, pearly white card. Its material is very special; it has the clarity of glass, yet it can be bent slightly like paper.
The only sentence written above was in a font resembling light and shadow:
"The Mage's Journal, founded by Charles Kane."
This was clearly a special magical item, but Lynn couldn't figure it out at first, so he tried to infuse it with magic.
The card gradually turned white and shiny.
It wasn't until Lynn infused the card with magical power equivalent to a second-circle spell that it was finally fully activated and stretched out in an instant.
So this is how the "entry-level spellcaster" threshold is set?
Lynn squinted, and only after the light faded could he make out the appearance of the object in front of him.
The card transformed into a 10-inch booklet, its cover neither made of leather nor paper, but of countless flowing lights.
The radiance condensed into a few lines of text:
"This newspaper was founded in 876 in Asia and serves only legally registered spellcasters in mainland China... What is your name?"
A blank space immediately appeared below, seemingly indicating that Lynn should fill in his name.
How am I supposed to fill this in? Lynn subconsciously picked up the quill pen on the table, but instead of dipping it in ink, she started drawing lines in the magic book out of thin air.
Unexpectedly, the radiance did indeed change in response to his movements.
Soon, the name "Lynn Lowell" appeared, and a moment later, it disappeared along with all the text on the cover.
Then came a few more lines of text:
"Mr. Lynn Lowell, welcome to the 'Mage's Gazette.' As a first-time subscriber, your first three months of service are free. After that, you will need to pay 5 silver coins on the 1st of each month. Failure to pay will result in the termination of service for that month. Of course, you can pay later or make up the missed payment..."
Lynn muttered to herself, "I just don't know how I'm going to pay the bill then?"
Unexpectedly, the cover of the Dharma Newspaper changed again. Its surface was uneven, and a crack appeared in the middle, just like a big mouth.
Then it opened its mouth wide, facing Lynn, and told him to see clearly the words that appeared inside.
"Cash Collection Area".
"How convenient..." Lynn chuckled to himself. Only after the mage reported that everything had returned to normal and no new writing appeared did he try to touch it.
The texture and appearance are equally strange, similar to paper, but incredibly smooth.
He sat at his desk, opened the first page, and was greeted by lines of neat handwriting and clear layout, almost identical to a real newspaper.
"Breaking news you absolutely can't miss in the year 993 of the Aschaval calendar!"
This tone sounds just like those explosive celebrity gossip stories...
The front page headline, prominently displayed in bright red, features the following line:
"The jewels on Queen Galadriel's crown were stolen during the night, and the investigation has revealed that the notorious Brotherhood of Dwarfs was responsible!"
The newspapers then devoted considerable space to describing Queen Galadriel's beauty and how dazzling and priceless the jewels in her crown were.
"Fortunately, the Queen herself was unharmed. King Francis was furious and ordered that all regions immediately investigate the identities of halflings, dwarves, and gnomes, and that the jewel be recovered within seven days. To this day, half a month has passed."
It's been over half a month and they still haven't recovered it? Then it's probably gone for good...
Lynn casually remarked that he wasn't particularly concerned about the matter, but he had been paying a little attention to it since he heard some royal secrets from Luke last time.
The subsequent large portion of the content consisted of reports related to magic.
"Fireball fanatics rejoice! The [Sulfur Fireball] spell is complete!"
"As everyone knows, the third-circle power-enhancing spell Fireball has won a large following due to its accessible circle rank and visually stunning explosive effect. After all, 'art is an explosion!'"
"An unnamed member of the White Tower has always been a fan of it, and in his spare time he is still obsessed with researching and improving the magic."
"Recently, he modified and fused the spell of Fireball with the third-circle summoning spell [Simple Sulfur Fire], and successfully invented the fourth-circle evocation spell Sulfur Fireball!"
"This spell adds a flame that can purify evil to the original fireball spell, but the explosion will produce a large amount of pungent odor..."
This is somewhat similar to my "fusion magic," only it's more traceable...
Lynn remarked that the invention of new magic in this world seemed to be more about re-creating existing magic based on existing magic, while truly revolutionary inventions were few and far between.
He continued flipping through the pages, and to his surprise, he found his own name in the corner of one of the pages.
"A new ring of evocation magic, the Frost Ring, discovered by novice mage Lynn Lowell!"
Lynn rubbed his temples, still feeling a little unaccustomed to seeing his own name on the newspaper.
Has my magic patent application been completed? Why haven't I received a notification myself, but I saw it in the mage's newspaper first?
He shook his head, both amused and exasperated, but according to Luke, the magical patent trial should be a very simple matter.
"Iverson, the inventor of the third-circle mental magic [First Night Heatwave], hereby announces that, for the benefit of all gentlemen, the [First Night Heatwave] magic book is on sale for a limited time at a 10% discount! Customized dreams are available; contact us at the address below if interested..."
This is the GG that Luke mentioned—a mental magic spell. Just from the name, you can tell it'll be very popular…
Lynn wasn't particularly interested in the magic book itself, but he was very curious about the inventor's invention process.
Should I also type "GG" in the mage's newspaper? He wondered to himself.
Lynn flipped through the pages and found a line of small print.
"The best advertising space in the world is waiting to be filled, starting at 50 gold coins..."
So expensive!
At this price, he would have to sell seven high-quality first-level magic books to earn the money, not even counting costs.
Let's put the GG thing aside for now; I don't have that much money coming up right now...
Moreover, a first-level spellbook doesn't seem worthwhile; it's not too late to try it later when we have higher-level spellbooks.
The Dharma Master's Report concludes with a review of some of the year's important events.
"Alan Shuz Hohenheim announced that he would relinquish his position as chief steward of the Golden Tower, stating that he would dedicate his limited energy to unlimited research."
"The alchemist, who is hailed as the greatest in the history of magic, held the top position for many years, and his announcement of retirement has been widely discussed."
"But this newspaper has reason to believe that he was forced to move from the forefront to the background because of the multiple explosions of the magical item 'Dream Machine' produced by the Golden Tower at the end of last year."
"The accident resulted in the deaths and injuries of several nobles, including an earl who was related to the royal family by marriage. The Golden Tower initially blamed the Blue Tower for providing theoretical and technical support, but the situation has since taken a dramatic turn. If you are interested, please purchase the 992 edition of the Assassin's Gazette annual subscription..."
This is starting to sound like a news story. But I wonder what impact the changes at the top of the Golden Tower will have on a new mage like me who has just entered the Golden Tower?
Lynn seemed to be deep in thought, her gaze slowly moving downwards.
"The Witch of Fate escapes the imprisonment of the Gray Tower's 'Land of Desirelessness'!"
