Chapter 78 Pre-meal Communication

There were many long tables set out there, laden with fine wines and delicacies, and another band from Count Frey was playing pre-dinner music for the guests.

The air was filled with the delicate fragrance of flowers and the sweet aroma of baked goods, mixed with the fragrance of expensive perfumes worn by the guests, making Lynn almost unable to breathe.

The seating at the banquet was arranged in advance according to the guest list, with guests seated based on their relationship to the host.

After the list was confirmed, Charlotte was led by a servant to the central seat, where the Green Tower members were seated, and she could see many spellcasters in emerald robes.

Lynn was placed in the most inconspicuous corner.

What's even more awkward is that he didn't know anyone at the table, and could only politely and vaguely nod to each other in greeting.

From their hushed conversation, Lynn roughly deduced that they were a group from the Lower City, whom the coachman had referred to as "lower nobles who couldn't afford houses in the Upper City."

They discreetly observed Lynn and quickly realized through brief exchanges and observations that he was an unknown fellow completely unfamiliar to them.

He was neither a traditional aristocrat nor a young upstart who had just made his mark in high society.

In other words, this guy isn't one of their "circles".

The expressions on these people's faces immediately turned strange, as if Lynn's presence had offended them.

"A businessman who loves to flaunt his wealth..."

"No, I think it looks more like... the pet of some unruly... lady..."

The nobles opposite Lynn had already begun to whisper among themselves. As they talked, their furrowed brows relaxed into blatant mockery.

Lynn calmly ate her pre-dinner salad and sweet bread slices with foie gras.

A middle-aged nobleman sitting next to Lynn, who looked somewhat amiable, was holding a glass of wine and was about to strike up a conversation with Lynn when he suddenly caught a glimpse of a maid in a linen dress.

He watched as the familiar-looking maid walked straight toward him, and just as he was about to ask her a question, he saw her stop behind Lynn.

"Mr. Lynn..."

"Grace?" Lynn turned around, somewhat surprised.

Isn't this Eli's personal maid?

Grace nodded stiffly and said urgently, "Mr. Lynn, please come with me."

Lynn reluctantly put down her cutlery, tore off her snow-white napkin, and followed in the footsteps of her maid, Grace, and left.

After he left, the remaining guests at the table immediately turned up their voices.

"Who exactly is that kid? Why did Count Frey arrange for him to sit with us?" His words were full of disdain.

The others chimed in with their own chatter, and after a discussion, they still couldn't find out Lynn's identity.

The kind-looking middle-aged nobleman, however, remained frowning in thought. Finally, he recalled something and said with some disbelief:

"That maid, I think she's one of Miss Eli Frey's maids?"

Upon hearing this, the "lower-class" nobles at the table immediately began to question whether the man had mistaken the person.

After all, although Miss Frey attended many social events, they rarely had the opportunity to meet her.

Only when others corroborated the testimony of the seemingly benevolent nobleman did the group fall silent with complex expressions.

Their minds wandered, and the faces of men from young to middle age revealed expressions of envy, jealousy, or even disdain.

The ladies turned to look at a married woman whose face was flushed, the one who had just called Lynn "the pet of some unruly lady."

……

Lynn followed Grace along the outer viewing corridor to the end, to a quiet garden balcony.

Eli was waiting for him here.

She changed out of the light green tulle dress she wore in the afternoon and into a dark blue silk evening gown.

Her light brown long hair was styled into a high bun, adorned with flower branches glistening with water droplets, and her makeup was more refined and mature.

Her back was ramrod straight, which made her neck appear even longer, and a magnificent necklace with a demon eagle emblem and emeralds hung around her neck.

This is somewhat different from her usual style; she has lost much of her girlish innocence and lightness, and gained more of the composure and authority of a person in power.

She dismissed her personal maid with a glance, then lifted the hem of her skirt with both hands and said to Lin En with an air of nonchalance:

"Good evening, Mr. Lynn."

Lynn smiled and said, "Good evening, Miss Eli, you look beautiful tonight."

Eli blinked, then sighed softly.

With that sigh, it seemed as if the pressure on her shoulders was suddenly lifted, her expression relaxed, and her demeanor became light and cheerful again, transforming her into that girl who loved to stroll in the woods with light steps.

She leaned closer to Lynn and said in an explaining tone:

"Lynn, I'm sorry, I can't interfere with the seating arrangement."

Lynn paused for a moment before realizing that she was apologizing for arranging for him to sit in a corner with a group of "lower nobles".

"You probably understand that it's difficult to explain our situation to my parents, and on the surface, I don't have a good reason to help you get a position."

In fact, she could tell her family that Lynn had saved her life, but she had her own selfish reasons for doing so.

Lynn nodded. "Miss Eli, our relationship on the surface is indeed not worth mentioning."

Eli tilted her head to look at Lynn, finding Lynn's words quite interesting.

So, what is their relationship in private?

They are sharers under the magic network, secret keepers illuminated by the brown star, secretly guarding the same unspoken secret.

"Lynn, tonight, I hope you can promise me two things."

Lynn smirked. "Miss Eli, if we're going by the principle of equal exchange, then you owe me five things now."

Eli suddenly turned his back and looked out at the river reflecting the moonlight.

This is a luxurious view that only those living on Amber Street in Luoan City can see, a vast natural landscape in the expensive Upper City.

"First, I hope you will choose me later."

What does this mean? Lynn opened his mouth to ask, but saw Eli turn around.

She walked towards Lynn, then bowed politely, extended her hand to him, and looked up with a smile:

"Secondly, I hope that after you choose me, you will invite me to dance, like this."

After saying that, she ran off and disappeared down the corridor on the other side of the balcony before Lynn could ask any questions.

Lynn felt confused, shook his head and smiled, and then found his way back to the banquet hall according to his memory.

The group at the table had already veered off-topic, and they were all somewhat surprised to see him return so quickly.

Several younger men grinned mischievously, about to strike up a conversation with him, when suddenly the music abruptly changed, and the atmosphere in the hall instantly became much more serious.

"The Earl of Roan is arriving..." A beautiful woman in a strapless dress, holding a small peacock feather fan, covered her face with the fan and said to her female companion with a slightly excited tone.

Lynn chewed on a melon ball wrapped in ham, glanced around, and saw that the guests had all stopped eating, sat up straight, and looked toward the head of the hall.
