NBA: This center is incredibly strong.
Chapter 16 Guardian of the Forbidden Zone
"That's my older brother! He dunked on that big black guy on the other side!"
Inside a restaurant called "Great Wall Chinese Restaurant" in Los Angeles' Chinatown, Chen Yan's cousin Chen Lei and many other Chinese people cheered and jumped for joy.
Upon learning that Chen Yan's debut would be broadcast live across the United States, his second uncle, Chen Jianguo, and his family waited in front of the television early in the morning to cheer on his nephew.
"You little brat, stop howling. Everyone knows you have a cousin who plays in the NBA." Aunt Lin Meifang's lips curled up, her tone filled with pride.
The second uncle didn't shout or yell, but watched his nephew Chen Yan, who had just finished a dunk and immediately returned to defense on TV, with slightly red eyes.
He knew that Chen Yan had realized his childhood dream and was happy for him.
On this joyous day, we must celebrate.
My second uncle turned around, addressed the customers filling the store, and announced in a booming voice, "I'm having a special day, everything's 20% off! It's on me!"
He knew his decision would result in the restaurant breaking even, but after today, the restaurant's business would definitely boom.
All because of one person—Chen Yan!
"The boss is so generous!" The cheers from the entire restaurant almost lifted the roof off.
Back on the court, the Knicks are launching an attack.
Mark Jackson dribbled the ball up the court and played a handoff with Sprewell.
A mismatch was created, and Sprewell took the ball and went one-on-one.
His speed is top-notch for the shooting guard position; his first step is incredibly fast.
Armstrong quickly moved to close the gap and showed great effort, but his height became a disadvantage.
Sprewell used his height advantage to pull up and shoot near the free-throw line.
2: 2!
Looking back, Hill displayed the brilliance of his prime.
He received the ball on the left wing, faced Houston's defense, and with a simple crossover dribble, he tore open the space and drove straight to the basket from the middle, making a floater before "Grandma" Johnson could come to help defend.
4: 2!
When it was the Knicks' turn to attack, "Mid-Range King" Allan Houston stepped up, pulled up and shot after a simple screen, the ball swishing through the net.
4: 4!
In the next possession, McGrady displayed his signature elegance, cutting in from the left, pulling up in mid-air to dodge Camby's block, and scoring with a reverse layup.
6: 4!
In the following game, the Magic's offense was initiated by McGrady and Hill, who both had a good shooting touch tonight and a very high shooting percentage.
The Knicks didn't falter either; their offense was well-organized. Allan Houston's mid-range jump shot was surgically precise, and Sprewell's drives were sharp and fierce.
The Magic's defense isn't bad, but the New Yorkers are always particularly difficult to beat at home.
The score went back and forth, and after more than six minutes of the first quarter, the score was tied at 14.
The turning point came with 4 minutes and 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Knicks missed their shot, and Camby boxed out Chen Yan under the basket, trying to grab the offensive rebound.
Chen Yan didn't compete with him to see who could jump first. Instead, he used his strength to firmly press down on Camby's lower body, making it difficult for him to even turn around, let alone jump.
The ball bounced off the rim and flew directly over the heads of the two players.
Chen Yan didn't jump; he simply stretched out his arm and caught the ball steadily over Camby's head. Then he immediately turned around and tossed the ball to Armstrong near the top of the arc.
"run!"
Armstrong shouted as he received the ball, and before he finished speaking, Hill had already swept out from the wing like a gust of wind.
McGrady followed up on the other side, and the Magic's three-line fast break was instantly formed.
Sprewell and Mark Jackson were quick to retreat, cutting off Armstrong's path and forcing him to slow down beyond the three-point line.
Seeing that things were not going well, Armstrong immediately moved the ball away.
Hill received the ball, dribbled once, and glanced to his right.
A familiar figure was sprinting straight down from the top of the arc.
Chen Yan started moving the moment he passed the ball.
Instead of slowly running to his position like a traditional center forward, he charged straight towards the frontcourt along the middle of the field.
Hill saw him, understood immediately, and gently tossed the ball towards the basket with his right hand. The arc wasn't high, but the landing point was perfect.
"Rookie, take flight!"
He knew that Chen Yan could definitely reach that height.
Chen Yan jumped from a point one step inside the free throw line.
His body was fully extended in the air, his right arm raised high, his palm open, making a tomahawk chopping motion.
The ball falls, and the hand is in position.
"Damn it! Too late." Camby did chase after him, but he was a step too slow.
When he jumped to try to block, Chen Yan's ball had already slammed into the basket, and his palm could only awkwardly pat the air.
After landing, he glanced at Chen Yan, his lips moved a few times, but he ultimately said nothing.
Chen Yan ran back to the backcourt from under the basket, and McGrady caught up from behind, slapping him hard on the back with a "you're really something" look on his face.
Hill smiled and pointed at him, while Armstrong shouted at the top of his lungs, "Just keep fighting like this!"
Chen Yan smiled in response, then returned to his defensive zone.
Offense and defense transition, Knicks on offense.
Seeing Chen Yan break through his restricted area one after another, Camby was very dissatisfied and vowed to get revenge.
He went straight to the left low post, turned his back to Chen Yan, and reached out for the ball.
"Dude, can you handle it?" Chen Yan 'kindly' reminded him.
Camby didn't respond, intending to shut the rookie up with his actions.
After receiving the ball, he lowered his center of gravity and dribbled the ball behind him.
"Hey bro, are you hungry? I'll have a Snickers bar." Chen Yan kept chattering away, trying to get him into a good mood.
Camby didn't understand, but he knew it wasn't anything nice.
He tried to push with his elbows repeatedly, but when he realized he couldn't get through, he immediately changed his strategy. After pushing once, he quickly turned forward and made a shooting fake.
"That's it?" Chen Yan was not surprised. He firmly planted his feet on the ground and raised his arms high.
Camby gritted his teeth and jumped to shoot, but as soon as the ball left his hand, Chen Yan slapped it off course, sending it flying past the edge of the backboard and out of bounds.
After landing, Camby glanced at Chen Yan but didn't say anything.
There was a hint of disbelief in his eyes, and a hint of defiance.
"Marcus, what happened? You've become a coward. You can't even handle a newbie?" Larry Jensen walked over and teased.
"If you're so capable, then you do it!" Camby immediately retorted.
"Just you wait and see how I'm going to thrash this rookie," Larry Jensen said, running to catch the ball from the baseline.
The game continues, and the Knicks inbound the ball from the baseline.
Larry Johnson received the ball, dribbled past De Klerk with his speed, and drove into the paint.
Chen Yan quickly returned to the basket to protect the rim.
Larry Johnson faced Chen Yan head-on and made a bold move, jumping up with both feet in an attempt to dunk over Chen Yan.
Seeing that another reckless guy wanted to challenge him, Chen Yan had no choice but to grant this guy's wish to become a background character.
He barely bent his knees, just squatted slightly, and then sprang up like a spring that had been compressed to its limit, placing his right hand directly on Larry Jensen's ball.
It wasn't a block, it was a direct grab of the ball.
A low gasp escaped the fans at Madison Square Garden.
After landing, Chen Yan immediately flicked the ball forward.
McGrady, who had already launched a fast break, received the ball and showed off a one-handed windmill dunk.
In the following possessions, whenever Knicks players stepped into the paint, they would unconsciously dribble the ball a little longer or glance at where Chen Yan was.
That instinctive hesitation, in the NBA, is often more destructive to a team's offensive system than a block.
Taking advantage of the Knicks' offense stalling, McGrady and Hill continued their steady output, breaking the deadlock and widening the score gap.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 24-16, with the Magic leading by 8 points.
