Chapter 3 We Didn't Do Anything Wrong

After half an hour.

bang bang~

Kill a regular zombie and gain +1 Order Point.

Kill a regular zombie and gain +1 Order Point.

"Phew~"

Tang Long exhaled a breath of stale air.

He wiped the sweat from his face with the back of his hand and glanced around.

Thick fog still shrouded the streets, reducing visibility to less than ten meters. The buildings in the distance were just blurry outlines, like giant beasts lurking in the fog.

He shook his head and glanced at the system panel.

[Order Points: 13]

Since he came out, he has killed twelve zombies, plus the few order points he had left, for a total of thirteen.

He emptied the magazine and replaced it with a spare.

"Oh! Those two shots shouldn't have missed, what a pity."

"Only fifteen bullets left, we need to use them sparingly." Tang Long sighed silently.

He needed to find food and fever reducers as soon as possible, otherwise he felt his body might not make it through the night.

In just a short while, he could clearly feel his strength failing him, his head was getting increasingly dizzy, and even his vision was becoming blurry.

Tang Long shook his head and took a deep breath.

Then he walked towards a residential building across the street.

This is an old residential area, with the tallest buildings being no more than seven stories high. Much of the cement on the exterior walls has peeled off, revealing the red bricks underneath.

The guardhouse had shattered glass all over the floor, and inside were abandoned cars and weeds that had grown wildly from the cracks in the ground, having been left unattended for a long time.

Tang Long walked towards the building furthest inside.

The iron gate to the stairwell was wide open, and the corners were covered with cobwebs. A smell of dust and decay wafted out from inside.

He gripped his pistol, pressed himself against the wall, and walked up step by step, ready to fire at any moment.

The hallway was dark, and the motion-activated lights had long been broken. Only Tang Long's footsteps echoed in the silent corridor.

Second floor, third floor, fourth floor.

The doors on each floor were open, and the inside had been ransacked.

Clearly, this place has been visited by more than one wave of survivors.

Tang Long only glanced at it and did not go in to check.

The apocalypse has been here for so long that it's hard to find anything useful in places that have been looted.

This is the experience of a survivor.

He continued upwards.

He stopped when he reached the fifth floor.

At the end of the corridor on this floor, a security door was tightly closed.

There were no signs of forced entry on the door, and the lock was intact.

Tang Long was overjoyed and quickly went to the door to listen carefully.

There was no sound inside.

He reached out and gently knocked on the door, glancing around warily as he did so.

Boom, boom, boom.

The dull sound echoed in the hallway.

Inside the door, all was still deathly silent.

"Is anyone there?" he asked tentatively.

No one answered.

Tang Long frowned, took two steps back, and without further hesitation, aimed his gun at the door lock and pulled the trigger.

boom!

A loud bang.

The door shook violently, and the lock snapped open instantly.

Tang Long pushed open the door and entered, and a strong stench immediately hit him.

This is a standard two-bedroom, one-living room apartment.

The living room curtains were drawn, making the room dimly lit.

The furniture was covered in dust.

On the ground, three figures slowly turned around as he entered.

A man, a woman, and a little boy who looked no more than five or six years old.

Their skin was bluish-gray, their eyes were cloudy, and they emitted low growls from their throats.

"Hmm..."

The man was the first to pounce.

Tang Long raised his gun expressionlessly.

boom!

The bullet struck the man precisely between the eyebrows.

His body fell backward and crashed heavily to the ground.

Kill a regular zombie and gain +1 Order Point.

The woman and child rushed forward as well.

boom!

boom!

Two more gunshots rang out.

The world is quiet.

Kill a regular zombie and gain +1 Order Point.

Kill a regular zombie and gain +1 Order Point.

Tang Long put down his gun, walked to the window, and pulled open the curtains.

The pale sunlight streamed in, dispelling the gloom in the room.

He turned his head, his gaze sweeping across the entire living room, finally landing on the coffee table in the center, where a notebook sat.

Tang Long walked over and picked up the notebook.

He turned to the first page.

"First day of fog. The news said it was just unusual weather and we shouldn't panic. My wife and I still went to the supermarket and bought a lot of things, filling the refrigerator to the brim. Better safe than sorry. Xiao Jie even asked me today why the sky has been gray all the time."

"It's the third day of the fog. There's no cell phone signal, and we can't watch TV. The water and electricity are out. Luckily, we live on the fifth floor, and there's a water tank on the roof, so we have enough water for now. We also have plenty of food. We must believe that rescue will come soon."

Tang Long's fingers traced the pages as he continued turning the pages.

The handwriting in the diary began to become messy.

"On the seventh day, there was only half a food left. The noise downstairs was getting louder and louder; those things... they were banging on the door. We dared not make a sound. My wife started to have a fever, and I gave her all the medicine I could find in the house, but it didn't help."

"On the eighth day, my wife's fever got higher and higher, and she started talking nonsense. Xiao Jie was very scared and kept crying in my arms. I told him that his father was here and everything would be alright."

"The ninth day. She's gone. This morning, I held her in my arms, and her body grew colder and colder. I didn't cry, I couldn't cry, Xiao Jie was still watching me. I carried his mother into the bedroom and covered her with a blanket. But Xiao Jie... why are his eyes starting to turn red too?"

Tang Long paused for a moment.

He turned to the last page.

This page contains only one line of text, the handwriting so distorted it almost tears through the paper.

"Day 10. We did nothing wrong, so why... Xiao Jie, wife, I'm here to be with you."

This concludes my diary entry.

Tang Long remained silent for a long time, then closed the notebook, put it back on the table, and began searching around the room.

First, I opened the drawer under the TV cabinet in the living room.

The first drawer is empty.

In the second drawer, there was an unopened pair of medical scissors, an alcohol bottle, and a half-opened bag of cold medicine.

Tang Long's eyes lit up, and he quickly packed the items away and put them in his backpack.

In the third drawer, there was a lighter and half a carton of unopened cigarettes.

Tang Long picked up the lighter and cigarettes and stuffed them into his backpack.

Then he went to the kitchen.

As soon as I opened the refrigerator door, a stench hit me.

It must have been because of the power outage that only some rotten vegetables and pork remained inside.

Tang Long frowned slightly, closed the refrigerator, and began to open the kitchen cabinets under the stove.

They were mostly pots, pans, bowls, and condiment bottles.

Until he opened the last cabinet, his eyes widened in surprise.

Holy crap!

Inside, there was a half-opened bag of rice and a half-box of bottled water.

Tang Long stepped forward, first stuffing the half-bag of rice into his backpack, then opening one of the bottles of mineral water, taking out cold medicine, and swallowing it directly with the water.

"Phew!" Tang Long breathed a heavy sigh of relief. "Not bad luck."

After filling up the remaining bottled water, Tang Long continued checking the other rooms, but unfortunately there was nothing else worth taking with him.

Tang Long walked to the window and looked at the thick fog outside.

The fog obscured everything, making the city look like a giant tomb.

He glanced back at the family of three lying on the ground and sighed silently.

"There is no order..."

"Perhaps, this is the fate of most people."
