Joining Tiandao Company: Starting by mending a zombie world
Chapter 4: Can I bring them along? [Please continue reading]
The wind howled at night.
Chu Sheng leaned against the wall, having stayed up all night, his mind constantly on edge.
Even when she falls asleep, she will be awakened by the slightest noise.
At that moment, he personally experienced the hardships these guerrilla fighters endured.
"You have a fever?"
Late at night, Lin Susu curled up into a ball, her body trembling incessantly.
He touched her forehead and found it burning hot. Chu Sheng quickly picked up her arm to check and found that the spot where the gun had pierced her was red and swollen, and inflamed.
"It's...it's okay," Lin Susu shook her head, "I can manage."
"How can we keep going like this? Inflammation on the battlefield is no small matter; it can lead to gas gangrene," Chu Sheng said anxiously.
He had occasionally learned some medical knowledge while watching survival shows, and he knew that without antibiotics, infected wounds could easily lead to death.
"If I...I die, go find the captain and have him take you to the brigade."
"They live in Mengcun, behind this mountain."
Lin Susu took out a small blue notebook from her bosom and handed it to Chu Sheng.
"No...don't die yet. Trust your immune system. They're still very strong."
Chu Sheng took it, opened it, and glanced at it. There were no photos, only a few lines of text.
Lin Susu was born in August 1919…
He closed the box and handed it back, saying, "I remember a few herbs; I'll pick some for you to try."
"It's too dark, it's dangerous," Lin Susu shook her head and stopped her.
"It's okay, I'm quick-witted."
Chu Sheng swept around, cut off some vines, smashed them with the butt of his gun, and applied them to Lin Susu's forehead to cool her down.
After thinking for a moment, he borrowed Lin Susu's turtle shell to bolster his courage and shouted in his heart, "May our ancestors bless us!"
Only then did he dare to leave the cave.
It's July now, and the mountains are in the midst of a period of rapid, lush growth of vegetation.
Chu Sheng stumbled through the darkness, the dense canopy of trees shattering the moonlight.
He gripped the borrowed turtle shell tightly, his palms sweating profusely. "It's more thrilling than wilderness survival."
Then, based on his memory from the day, he pulled up a few plants that looked like plantain or dandelion and stuffed them into his pocket.
Just as Chu Sheng was focused on finding herbs, a patrol of Japanese soldiers with their wolfhounds passed by from a hundred meters away.
The beam of the flashlight swept across the forest.
Startled, Chu Sheng quickly crouched down and hid behind a thicket of bushes, his heart pounding.
He quietly parted the leaves and peered out, and saw on the mountain path not far away...
A group of Japanese soldiers were escorting several heavy wooden crates toward a hidden cave.
The leader was none other than Yu Dahai, the bespectacled fat man we had met during the day.
"Be gentle! These are Colonel Kujii's treasures."
Yu Dahai perfectly portrayed the image of a traitor.
"Hey!!" Several little bastards were very obedient, bowing and scraping to a traitor.
Chu Sheng held his breath, watching as the boxes were carried into the cave one after another, his eyes gradually brightening:
"baby?"
The boxes looked very heavy, and the soldiers carrying them seemed to be struggling.
It's not gold, it's something like an antique.
Just then, two more groups of people came up from the foot of the mountain, one of them carrying a black coffin.
"coffin?"
Yu Dahai and Chu Sheng cursed at the same time, "What bad luck!"
Chu Sheng was filled with doubts, recalling the Japanese soldier who had rapidly turned into a zombie during the day.
I guessed that's what was inside.
He raised the turtle shell, aimed at the sea, hesitated for two seconds, and then put the gun down.
Whether firing that shot would actually kill someone in the sea is another matter.
It will definitely alert the enemy.
Given the Japanese's track record, they will definitely move these treasures.
"Keep them for now. A month from now, when the Japanese surrender, I'll take them all home."
Chu Sheng grinned and quietly backed away, making a mark under a tree.
Just as they were preparing to return,
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that the shape of the leaves of a plant not far away looked somewhat familiar.
"That's... mugwort?"
He remembered that mugwort also seemed to have some effect in dispelling cold and stopping bleeding, so he simply picked some as well.
Not daring to linger any longer, Chu Sheng ran back along the way he came, almost tiptoeing.
He only breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the hole hidden by vines.
……
"I found some herbs, but I don't know if they'll be of any use."
Chu Sheng crawled back into the cave and spread out the herbs in his arms for Lin Susu to see.
"Is this mugwort?"
Lin Susu barely opened her eyes and looked around in the faint moonlight filtering through the cave entrance, her voice weak.
She only recognized mugwort, which used to be placed on the door during festivals.
"That's right, these are plantain, dandelion, and houttuynia cordata."
Chu Sheng explained the effects one by one.
Plantain has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Dandelion can reduce swelling and has antibacterial properties.
Houttuynia cordata is the most suitable herb for treating infections.
He tore off several strips of cloth from the cheap 20-yuan outfit he was wearing.
He then found a gun butt, crushed three kinds of herbs, and applied them to Lin Susu's red, swollen, and inflamed gunshot wound.
He then fed the mugwort leaves into Lin Susu's mouth before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
Whether they live or die is entirely up to fate.
"You college students know so much, you're really amazing."
"No wonder even the leaders are advocating that we read more books."
Lin Susu's eyes were filled with envy, and her trust in Chu Sheng increased even more.
"It's really nothing special."
"However, if you were with me, you would probably be more capable than me."
"He can fight the Japanese invaders and knows martial arts."
"A woman who was shot but didn't utter a sound."
"Don't even mention it, I've never even seen a man like that before."
"With this kind of willpower alone, you could probably get into a 985 or 211 university, let alone a third-rate one."
Chu Sheng said admiringly.
"What are 985 and 211? Can you explain them to me?" Lin Susu asked curiously.
"985 and 211 are..." Chu Sheng was about to explain the difference between the two types of universities to Lin Susu.
Then, I heard Lin Susu's breathing gradually becoming even and long.
He leaned closer to Lin Susu and gently touched her brow with his finger.
Finding that it wasn't as hot as before, a huge weight was lifted from my heart.
I'm glad I finally accomplished something.
As I was thinking, my eyelids involuntarily closed.
He was startled awake by a sudden jolt the next morning.
"Oh no, oh no, he fell asleep."
Chu Sheng sat up abruptly, saw that the cave had not changed at all, and patted his chest.
"Comrade Chu, you're awake." Lin Susu had been awake for a while, but she hadn't called out to Chu Sheng.
"Comrade Lin... when did you wake up?"
Chu Sheng looked at Lin Susu embarrassedly. He had been so tired last night that he had fallen asleep. He quickly asked:
"How are you feeling?"
"Much better," Lin Susu said, her face still pale, but her spirits had clearly improved.
She tried moving her injured arm, and the pain lessened considerably. She said:
"This is still Japanese territory, it's not very safe."
"Let's go."
"I need to get back to Mengcun and report to the team leader as soon as possible."
At this point, Lin Susu looked at Chu Sheng somewhat shyly, "But... I'll have to trouble you to carry me."
Chu Sheng laughed, "What's the big deal? It's my honor to carry a beautiful woman on my back. Just remember to take me to Master Mao."
Lin Susu glanced at the three spears out of the corner of her eye and asked reluctantly, "Can we take them with us?"
"Simple." Chu Sheng slung three rifles over his shoulder, carefully carried Lin Susu on his back, and headed out of the cave.
