Chapter 50: Asking the Mountain God for Money [Please read on, please vote!]

Three days passed after the city of Man was captured.

Chu Sheng's injuries were not serious, and his constitution was different from ordinary people, so he recovered the fastest.

His eyes lit up, and he set his sights on the treasure of Jiujing. He grabbed Yu Chuda, who was wrapped in bandages, and Itachi, and they decided to sneak off.

"Junior brother, what are you doing now? Master can't be without someone by his side," Yu Chuda said anxiously.

"Master is severely depleted of his vital energy. Let's take Weasel and go up the mountain to get some 'chicken essence' to replenish it for him," Chu Sheng coaxed and lied.

Upon hearing that it was to nourish Mao Xiaofang's body, Yu Chuda no longer hesitated, got dressed, and followed.

The two had just stepped out with Itachi when they bumped into Little Bean, who was looking for someone.

"Brother Sheng, that's great! Sister Susu is back and wants to invite you over. She says she wants to introduce you to someone very important." Xiaodouzi said with a happy expression.

"Comrade Lin is back?"

When Chu Sheng returned, he didn't see her and was worried.

I heard she went to work as a liaison officer, but I didn't expect her to come back so soon.

But at this moment, his mind was on the treasure, and he patted Little Bean and said:

"My senior brother and I are going out of the city. We'll come back to find you."

Little Bean was taken aback, then grinned sheepishly and pleaded:

"Brother Sheng, can I go with you? I want to go too."

Chu Sheng refused without even thinking.

Xiao Douzi's identity is special, and having him around will inevitably hinder his plans to make money.

Little Bean pouted, a hint of disappointment flashing in his eyes, and forced a smile, saying, "Then...then I'll see you out of the city gate."

Chu Sheng did not refuse again. The three of them walked towards the east gate.

As we passed through Dongcheng, a makeshift medical tent came into view.

The room was packed with wounded soldiers, and the air was thick with the smell of disinfectant mixed with the stench of blood.

A female medic who looked like a student was biting her lip as she used boiled gauze to clean a soldier's deep, bone-revealing wound.

The soldier's forehead was covered in cold sweat, but he gritted his teeth and didn't utter a sound.

Outside the shelter, more wounded people waited against the broken wall, their faces ashen.

"Why don't they go to the hospital?" Yu Chuda couldn't help but ask.

"The hospital is full, and it's also housing ordinary people. Cadre Yang said we can't cause any disturbances."

Little Bean explained in a low voice, his fist clenching quietly.

Looking at the scene inside the shed, Yu Chuda curled his lip and said, "Junior brother, they're really in a sorry state."

Xiao Douzi's voice was hoarse: "In this battle, the guerrillas lost 30% of their brothers, and the main force suffered more than half casualties... What's most hateful is that the Japanese devils burned down the granary and medicine depot before they left!"

"Now...now everyone is having trouble getting food and medicine."

Yu Chuda frowned upon hearing this: "Then what should we do? Buy it somewhere else?"

Little Bean shook his head and sighed, "Where would we get the money? We can only try to ask the wealthy people in town for a donation."

"What do you want?" Yu Chuda blurted out. "If you ask me, none of those rich and heartless lords are good people. We should just kill them all."

Little Bean nodded emphatically, his eyes filled with righteous indignation: "That's right! They all deserve to die!"

"Stop!" Chu Sheng was startled and quickly stopped him.

"Don't talk nonsense! Little Bean, your team is disciplined, you can't mess around."

His steps unconsciously slowed down.

His gaze swept over the faces of those suffering from the lack of medicine.

His gaze fell upon the lifeless eyes of the wounded, and finally, he let out a long sigh:

"Little Bean, come with me. I'll see if I can help you make some money."

Little Bean was taken aback and asked in surprise, "Where can we get it?"

Chu Sheng smirked and pointed at the mountain, saying, "Go ask the Mountain God for it!"

"Ask the mountain god for money?"

Little Bean blinked, not understanding what Chu Sheng meant.

"The Mountain God?" Yu Chuda scratched his bandaged head.

"Junior brother, did you go crazy fighting ghosts yesterday? The mountain god is incredibly stingy; how could he possibly give you money?"

Chu Sheng chuckled and said, "Stop talking nonsense, let's go. If we're lucky, we'll have enough food and medicine."

After saying that, he strode out of Gantian Town. Seeing this, Yu Chuda and Xiaodouzi did not object and obediently followed him.

The three people and one weasel left Gantian Town and headed north along the mountain path.

Once on the road, Chu Jun followed his memory and walked for about two hours, as the mountain became increasingly steep.

Following his memory, Chu Sheng searched for the old tree he had marked when he fled that day.

"It's probably in this mountain valley," Chu Sheng said, pointing to a spot on the map. "I've marked it."

"What mark?"

"Under an old locust tree, I peeled off a piece of bark."

The three walked along the mountain path for about an hour when Chu Sheng suddenly stopped.

Not far ahead, an old locust tree, so large that it would take three people to encircle it, stood quietly, and sure enough, there was a fresh scratch mark on its trunk.

"This is it!" Chu Sheng's eyes lit up.

He circled the locust tree twice, looking southeast—that's the direction from which the sea had come that night.

"Come with me."

The three of them squeezed into the dense bushes and climbed upwards using both their hands and feet.

After walking for about half an incense stick's time, Chu Sheng suddenly squatted down, signaling the two to be quiet.

Twenty meters ahead, the entrance to a hidden cave was half-hidden by vines.

There were obvious trampling marks around the entrance to the cave, and several deep drag marks on the ground—likely left by moving heavy objects.

"This is it!" Chu Sheng's heart raced.

"The entrance to the cave appears to have been sealed off."

Yu Chuda frowned as he observed. Several large stones were piled up at the cave entrance, but it was clearly done hastily, as there were gaps between the stones.

"That's it," Chu Sheng said with a smile, "This is the place."

Yu Chuda and Xiaodouzi craned their necks and looked inside, but there was nothing but rocks.

"Stop looking at the stones," Chu Sheng said speechlessly.

"Alright!" Yu Chuda braced himself against a large rock with his uninjured shoulder, ready to exert his strength.

"squeak--!"

The weasel, perched on Chu Sheng's shoulder, twitched its small nose rapidly and straightened its long, thin tail.

It let out a soft "squeak," and its black bean-like eyes stared warily at the dense forest diagonally above the cave.

"Someone's there!" Chu Sheng's heart tightened, and he immediately stopped and listened intently.

Yu Chuda mouthed, "Japanese devils?"

Chu Sheng listened intently.

"They might be traitors... or remnants of the Japanese army."

He answered in a low voice, glancing at the half-excavated pile of stones, and said, "Let's hide it first."

Upon hearing this, Yu Chuda and Xiaodouzi quickly ducked down and hid behind the rocks at the cave entrance, holding their breath. The latter even raised his long spear and aimed at the outside of the cave.

The rustling footsteps echoed through the foliage, growing louder as they approached. It sounded like more than one person was walking steadily, clearly a seasoned hiker.

Chu Sheng quietly parted the gaps in the vines that were obscuring his view and peered out.

Three figures were seen coming down the hillside, heading straight towards the cave entrance where they were.

The leader was a tall and upright man wearing a coarse cloth jacket that was neither new nor old.

His waist was bulging as if he were carrying something, and he had a dark headscarf wrapped around his head.

Although his face was covered in dust, it couldn't hide his calm and sharp temperament.

A man and a woman followed behind.

The man was burly and dark-skinned, carrying a peculiar bow and arrow on his back. The bow was jet black and had a metallic sheen.

The woman was young and nimble, carrying a wicker basket that looked like a medicine box. Her eyes were bright and alert as she looked around warily.

These three people... Chu Sheng felt they looked somewhat familiar.

Especially his calm yet sharp demeanor and that distinctive bow and arrow...
