Chapter 48 Bedtime Talk
After dinner, everyone washed up and changed into their pajamas, preparing to sleep together in a huge guest room.
Wayne was following Chris around like a puppy when she suddenly stopped, almost causing him to bump into her.
"Wayne—"
"Hey? What's wrong?"
Chris, with her blonde hair flowing freely and clutching a square cushion, turned around unhappily.
"Boys are not allowed to join the girls' late-night chats!"
With that, she slammed the door shut, leaving Wayne outside.
"..."
In the bedroom, all the lights were turned off, leaving it dimly lit.
On the floor, five quilts were arranged in a small circle, connected in the middle by a pentagram made of strips of cloth, with each corner connected to a small hill.
Suddenly, one of the blankets was flung open with a "whoosh," revealing half of a strange face illuminated by green fluorescent light.
Then, Chris's erratic voice rang out.
"Long, long ago, an adventurer from afar came to a place called Demon Town~"
"Eek—" The "little hill" on Chris's left trembled.
"Because it was getting dark, he had no choice but to ask a family in this small town for lodging."
"They warmly welcomed the adventurer into their home and invited him to dinner. The adventurer declined, as he was not hungry."
"But!"
Chris raised her voice, creating an atmosphere of tension: "When he tried to fall asleep at night, he discovered that this family—seemed to be problematic."
The other "little hills" also unconsciously shrank to become rounder.
"For some reason, whenever he entered the room, there was always a knocking sound on the door."
He pushed open the door in confusion and went outside, but there was nothing there. But as soon as he returned to his room, the strange sound would start again, keeping him awake.
"The adventurer, unable to bear it any longer, tentatively asked: 'Is anyone outside?'"
The noise outside stopped for a moment, but soon it started again, and it was louder.
"So the adventurer drew his sword and gently pushed the door open a crack. He peeked out with one eye—"
In the darkness, someone let out a soft "ah".
"He saw it—" Chris revealed a sinister smile.
"Another eye is staring intently at him through the crack in the door!"
"Ahhhhh..." President Sophia screamed in panic, yanked off Meimei's blanket and crawled inside.
"Ah! A ghost has crawled in!" the minister screamed.
Molly and Eve were so frightened that they scrambled to their feet and fled in all directions, clutching their blankets.
Under the eerie green light, the room was in complete chaos.
"Pfft—" Chris couldn't help but burst out laughing. "Hahahaha! Just kidding."
She put the magic stone back under the covers. "You guys are too cowardly. You're even afraid of stories like this."
"Phew." Molly breathed a sigh of relief, pouting and complaining, "I never expected Lady Chris to be such a... mean person."
Although Molly had known this young lady since she first entered the primary school, this was the first time she had ever seen her in such a vibrant light.
To be honest, I was a little startled.
She had always thought that Lady Chris was a model of nobility, meticulous in her life, possessing a noble character, and full of pride in her life.
Driven by such aspirations, she would even unconsciously try to imitate Chris's words and actions, hoping to become more like Lady Chris.
But it turns out that Lady Chris is also a person who likes to joke, and is kind and friendly.
But this feeling isn't bad...
Very good! Let's get closer to Lady Chris little by little. I will protect Lady Chris!
With that thought in mind, Molly picked up the blanket and stood up, wanting to move a little closer to Chris.
I was so panicked just now that I felt like I rolled around on the ground several times, and I couldn't even tell where I was.
"Knock knock knock—"
A strange sound came from behind.
Molly froze.
"Knock knock knock—"
Who is it? Who is knocking at the door?!
They couldn't see anything in front of them, and everyone who had been making all sorts of noises just moments before seemed to have fallen silent.
Molly became frightened.
The cold air crept up my feet as they touched the floor, making my legs feel like they were frozen in place.
……
Wayne, dressed in his pajamas, stood in the doorway, listening intently to any sounds coming from inside.
"Why was it so noisy just now, but now it's completely silent?" he muttered to himself, puzzled.
I was in my bedroom downstairs, doing my usual pre-sleep magic practice, when suddenly there was a loud "bang, bang, bang" like an earthquake upstairs, accompanied by a piercing scream.
He was so frightened that he almost accidentally blew up the house.
Worried, he wanted to come up and see what had happened, but after knocking on the door for a long time, there was no response from inside.
Could it be that Chris has pulled some crazy trick again and gone too far?
In typical wish-fulfillment stories, this sometimes happens: the protagonist accidentally brings home some kind of magical artifact, and after accidentally activating it, it produces destructive side effects.
Could it be that Chris also encountered this situation?
"Knock, knock, knock." He knocked on the door again. "Is anyone home?"
Wayne frowned, wondering whether he should force his way in to see what was going on, or go downstairs and wake up the other maids so they could handle it.
Suddenly, the door in front of them creaked open a crack.
Surprised, Wayne peered through the crack in the door and his eyes met those of another eye peeking through the door.
"Aaaaaah—" A piercing scream made Wayne's eardrums buzz. "A ghost!"
Wayne pushed the door open, and a dull thud came from inside, as if he had bumped into something.
He reached out and turned on the magic lamp in the room. He saw a girl lying unconscious on the ground, and four tangled, shivering blankets.
"Chris?" he called out uncertainly.
The blanket was slowly lifted slightly, revealing Chris's eyes. She exclaimed in surprise, "Wayne?!"
Finally, under the soft light of the magic wall lamp, everyone cleared up the misunderstanding.
Molly slowly woke up after Chris pinched, squeezed, and pressed her repeatedly.
When Wayne learned why all this had happened, he was speechless.
"So, you're just telling ghost stories to scare yourselves, and then you think I'm a ghost knocking on your door?"
Damn it! Why didn't you invite me to tell ghost stories to a pretty girl?!
"It's all Wayne's fault for suddenly knocking on the door and asking 'Is anyone home?' Just like in the story..." Chris pouted, skillfully shifting the blame.
"...The story Lady Chris told was truly terrifying," Eve said, patting her chest with lingering fear.
"How about I join in too? I just read a really interesting ghost story a couple of days ago."
Wayne sat on the ground.
"Absolutely not!"
