Chapter 37 [The Silent Lady] (Please continue reading)

Although this wasn't Li Wei's first time killing someone, it was the first time he had killed someone in his own bedroom.

He stared at the corpse on the ground, removed the black metal raven's beak mask, and the split head was no longer recognizable as to who it was.

"What bad luck, I'll have to sleep in a different room tomorrow."

"But I really don't know this person. He's probably an assassin hired by my enemy. The problem is, I'm just a kid in my teens, I've never messed with anyone, so why would anyone send someone to kill me?"

For a moment, Li Wei began to recall his life of kindness and compassion.

Ultimately, he could only think of two people who might have a motive to kill him.

First, there's Pastor Abraham. After all, he had just rejected the church not long ago and hadn't given that high and mighty pastor a friendly look, so he might indeed kill him.

The second possibility is the Duke of Black Mountain and the two counts who are closest to him: the Count of Silver Veil and the Count of Blood.

After all, these people had occupied his territory, and although he might not care on the surface, they knew that if he were to grow into someone like the Black Serpent Knight one day, he might be able to take back his territory. So they decided to go all the way and make the Black Serpent family completely extinct.

"But if that's the case, why did they let me go in the first place? That doesn't make sense," Li Wei muttered to himself.

"Or perhaps it was done by that old dog Abraham."

"In short, apart from these two, I don't think I have any other conflicts of interest or grudges with anyone else."

"Could it be the Wild Boar Gang? They robbed my people before, and now they want to take me down?"

"However, the Wild Boar Gang is a criminal organization in the underworld, so they probably wouldn't hire assassins. They're not afraid of ruining their reputation."

Li Wei paced back and forth in the room, somewhat agitated.

"I've been so low-key and so tolerant, why, why do they still want to kill me?"

"No, I have to find out who is trying to harm me. Once I find out... if I can beat them, I have to take care of them, otherwise I won't be able to eat or sleep in peace."

It was his own castle, surrounded by high walls, and constantly patrolled by soldiers.

The assassin was able to sneak in so easily, so he must be quite skilled and adept at stealth.

Thinking of this, Li Wei took out a knife and cut open the assassin's chest. On the assassin's heart, there was a black, ethereal, gaseous object, like an octopus, lurking on it, with countless capillary-like tentacles rooted in the heart.

"Heh, a seed of life! As expected, this person is a formal knight!"

"The fact that a full-fledged knight was sent to deal with me means that the mastermind behind it must be extraordinary." Li Wei's expression was uncertain.

As the assassin died, the octopus-shaped life seed began to slowly dissipate.

Li Wei watched silently; it was also the first time he had ever dissected a formal knight.

Sure enough, just like the situation inside his own body, there was a similar seed of life in his heart.

However, while his own life seed was snake-shaped, this life seed was octopus-shaped.

Li Wei stripped the assassin of all his clothes, searching for clues.

Finally, he found a booklet inside the assassin's clothes.

The booklet has only a few pages, and the cover features a figure hidden in the shadows, with a dark and eerie style.

"The Hymn to the Shadows".

Li Wei silently recited to himself as he opened the booklet.

The content is similar to some religious books, and the entire text introduces a deity named:

Lord of Shadows.

"The Lord of Shadows? Never heard of him." Li Wei shook his head.

While the number of deities worshipped in this world may not be countless, there are still quite a few.

Besides the [Heavenly Father] worshipped by the Church of Holy Light, there are also the [Earth Mother] of the Church of Earth, the [Goddess of Ice and Snow] of the Church of Winter, the [Earth Emperor] of the Church of Storms, the [Eternal Fire] of the Church of Eternal Life, the [King of Ten Thousand Dragons] of the Church of Dragons, and the [Lord of the Stars] of the Church of Stars. These seven are the seven true gods worshipped by the people of seven countries in the world today.

The reason why the seven true gods are called true gods is simply because their churches have a huge influence in the seven kingdoms, and they call themselves true gods.

Besides these seven righteous gods, Li Wei also knew of other faiths such as the Wilderness Brotherhood's [Lord of the Wilderness], the Silent Lady of the Silent Monastery, and the [God of War] worshipped by some war enthusiasts.

Therefore, it's normal that Li Wei didn't know about the Lord of Shadows.

Essentially, the Voice of the Death Bird is a very small organization with few followers of the Lord of Shadows, and it has not spread widely at all.

In the past, Li Wei would have been indifferent to these beliefs in gods, but after confirming the existence of wizards, he discovered that some myths and legends might not be as simple as he had imagined.

If this world can have wizards who wield supernatural powers, why can't it have even more powerful gods?

Li Wei still held the gods in high esteem.

Although he doesn't believe in these things, he respects other people's beliefs, provided that they don't harm him.

After reading the Praise of the Shadows, Li Wei discovered that the last page of the booklet contained a diagram of the lineage of a breathing technique.

The inheritance diagram was very similar to the breathing technique inheritance diagram that Li Wei had obtained before, except that in the very center of those little figures was a turbulent sea, and in the center of the sea was a huge sea monster that resembled an octopus, somewhat like the sea monster legend that circulated in parts of Europe in his previous life: the Kraken.

"?? There are people who carry their breathing techniques with them?"

Li Wei also found it funny.

What he didn't know was that the Siren Breathing Technique was the most common breathing technique among members of the Deathbird Voice organization. This organization would give some manuals promoting the Shadow Lord and printed with the Siren Breathing Technique to some commoner children they believed had potential but did not have an ancestral breathing technique. They would train their assassin skills from a young age and provide resources for them to practice the Siren Breathing Technique, thus ensuring that the organization always had a constant influx of fresh blood.

The Siren Breathing Technique is an extremely suitable breathing technique for assassination, emphasizing the flexibility and agility of the body. When cultivated to the level of a formal knight, it can even change a person's body shape through a principle similar to bone shrinking. If combined with some makeup skills, it can even completely transform one's appearance.

In fact, if the Phantom Knight hadn't underestimated him and gotten too close to Li Wei, catching him off guard, even if Li Wei were a formal knight, killing the Phantom Knight wouldn't have been so easy.

Li Wei put away the "Shadow Praise" book, which contained a diagram of the breathing technique's lineage, along with the raven-beak mask, the rather nice-looking dagger, and other assassination tools.

Li Wei tore the worthless killer's body into pieces and threw it into the roaring fireplace. He watched the body burn in the flames, crackling and emitting a pungent stench. In the distance, Li Wei seemed to see a wildly dancing eight-clawed phantom rising in the flames and then gradually disappearing. When he focused his gaze, all that remained was a pile of charred bones.

"Ha, this breathing technique is really weird."

Li Wei's heart remained calm and undisturbed.
