Chapter 86 King of the Night
The black mist emanated an astonishing pressure, even more suffocating than the pressure emanating from the dragonman before.
Everyone stared wide-eyed at the fog that was darker than the night.
"Run!" the knight shouted.
He turned and ran to the wounded priestess, hoisted her onto his back, and began to flee. Their horses had been killed, and now they could only escape on foot.
The black mist gradually began to dissipate, and Rhodes and the others realized what was happening and turned around to start running.
Before they could run more than a few steps, their feet were bound by a black shadow.
Rhodes turned his head. "What the hell is this thing?" Hammer said in a cold voice.
The black mist completely dissipated, revealing a massive figure.
Its appearance is somewhat similar to the demon described by Rhodes before his transmigration, but it looks more like an enlarged version of the vampire lord from a single-player game whose sequel was endlessly delayed.
It had huge black bat wings behind it, and a pair of sharp, backward-curving horns on its head. It constantly emitted black mist, and Rhodes and the others' feet were entangled in the black mist.
The demon opened its golden eyes, eyes that Rhodes had never seen before, eyes devoid of any emotion.
"Damn mortals, how dare you kill my chosen ones!" The demon's voice boomed, making Rhodes' eardrums ache.
He picked up the greatsword from the ground, "and not only that, he also tried to steal the weapon I had given him."
Rhodes was curious. Could there really be a god in this world? But it didn't seem like one. Its aura was only slightly stronger than that of a dragonman who had just broken free from its seal.
"Don't play tricks here. You are nothing but a false god. When the light of the one true god, my lord, shines down, you will be reduced to ashes." A priestess emanated golden light, and the black mist on Rhodes' feet completely dissipated.
"Humble mortal, you know nothing of my power. I am Adrian, the Lord of the Night, the King of Night." He spread his enormous wings, his voice growing even louder. "Tonight, you will all die!"
"It's past midnight, and we'll have to wait another 10+ hours tonight! Come back later!" Rod interjected.
His attempt to escape was merely an instinctive reaction after hearing the knight's shout.
Now that he's calmed down, he's not so scared anymore.
He had confidence in Baron. This so-called Night King seemed only slightly stronger than the dragonman who had just broken free of his seal, and probably not even as powerful as the dragonman when Baron had severely injured him. Most importantly, Baron's performance just now was outstanding; he had directly killed the Blackheart Knight.
The battles at White Hart Castle and along the way had instilled in him considerable confidence in his and Baron's abilities. And now, besides Baron, there were also knights and priests from the Radiant Cross Knights present; it seemed unlikely they would lose.
The Night King clasped his hands together, and suddenly it became even darker around Rhodes. Before, he could barely see anything, but now it was pitch black. He looked down and found that he couldn't even see his own hands.
The sudden darkness almost made Rhodes think he had gone blind.
Just then, Hammer's voice came from the side, "What kind of magic is this? I can't see anything at all!"
Hammer was still saying something, but his voice was getting softer and softer, and the surroundings were becoming increasingly quiet.
Rod shouted loudly, but he couldn't hear anything himself.
Darkness not only swallowed all the light, but also the sound.
Rhodes' heart pounded harder and harder. It seemed he had underestimated the Night King. He felt like he had encountered this situation somewhere before.
It was in a dream I had after several fainting spells!
Rhodes quickly forced himself to calm down. He had encountered such complete darkness before, except in his dreams, in the passageway of the tomb where the dragon people were sealed.
The last complete darkness was caused by the cave's unique environment, but this time it was caused by this creature that calls itself the King of the Night.
Rhodes thought about it and realized that he had been beaten badly last time and didn't know how he survived. Could this time be his death day?
He took a deep breath and began to walk forward, not knowing how far he had gone. The darkness not only swallowed light and sound, but also robbed Rhodes of his sense of touch.
He looked down and saw that although the ground was pitch black, there were no countless hands trying to grab him and drag him into the abyss, unlike in his previous dream.
A golden light appeared in the distance, flickering and swaying like a candle flame in the wind, as if it were about to go out. Rhodes ran towards the light.
As he ran closer, Rhodes finally saw the only light in the darkness: the beautiful priestess.
The priestess looked at him and opened her mouth as if to speak to him, but he couldn't hear anything.
Since she's here, it means we're still in the same place. How is Balon, who's closest to the Night King, doing now?
Rod was somewhat worried about Baron.
The darkness gradually began to dissipate, and a faint voice came from the priestess. Rhodes listened carefully and finally heard her say something like, "Dawn is coming."
He felt the voice was somewhat familiar, as if he had heard it before.
The darkness completely dissipated, and Rhodes looked up to see a fiery red sun rising in the distance. The surrounding darkness gradually faded and returned to normal.
The crimson dawn completely banished the darkness.
But the vampire who called himself the King of the Night did not leave. He held the Blackheart Knight's greatsword in one hand, as if it were an adult wielding a one-handed sword. The black mist around him had lessened considerably, but it still emanated a terrifying aura.
Baron, panting heavily, had planted his Mo Dao (a type of long-handled sword) in the ground not far away. He had several shocking wounds on his body, including a gaping wound that stretched from his chest to his right shoulder.
Beside him lay the corpses of the knight and the priestess, both of whom had been hacked to pieces by the Night King's greatsword, their deaths gruesome.
"It's time to go home, little bat," Baron said, standing up.
"What do you take me for? A lowly mortal," the Night King said. "Do you think I'm a pathetic, ordinary vampire?"
"Aren't you just a vampire lord?" Baron chuckled. "I've only personally killed one like you once."
"Another boastful mortal. I'm not as weak as you think." The Night King spread his wings and flapped them forcefully, plunging the sky back into darkness. "It's time to hunt again."
"Don't waste your magic. If you're afraid of the sun's heat, why don't you hurry back to your cave and hide?" Baron mocked.
"It will only take five minutes to deal with you all, and we'll have plenty of time to finish you off," the Night King replied.
This time, it only darkens the surroundings; it cannot eliminate sound like before.
It seems that the rising sun has a significant effect on weakening it.
Rhodes, wielding his two-handed sword, used the "Snow-Treading Without a Trace" technique to minimize the noise of his footsteps as he slowly approached Baron.
At the same time, the Night King, wielding his greatsword, forced Balon, whose flames were almost extinguished, to retreat in defeat.
Rhodes planned to take advantage of the Night King's current focus on fighting Balon to launch a surprise attack.
Rhodes ambushed that dragonman in the same way last time, but unfortunately, the dragonman's heart structure is different from that of a normal person, so he was unable to kill it in one go.
He controlled his steps and breathing, slowly approaching the Night King from behind.
I definitely want to learn stealth techniques from Webber sometime in the future. I wonder if stealth has any special effects like a 15x critical hit rate with daggers.
Just as Rhodes was about to draw his sword, the Night King sensed Rhodes behind him, sneered, and swiftly slashed at Rhodes with his greatsword.
Rhodes instinctively used the White Rainbow Sword Technique to deflect the greatsword's force, but the immense force from the swords in both hands almost sent the sword flying.
He gripped his sword tightly and launched an attack on the Night King, who turned around to parry Baron's attacks while Rhodes attacked him.
Seeing how much it looked down on him, Rhode used all his strength to slash at the Night King with his two-handed sword. The black mist on the Night King solidified into a shield, blocking the spot where Rhode was about to attack.
boom!
The two-handed sword, shimmering with golden light, shattered the shield formed by the black mist, but Rhode's attack missed after being blocked by the shield.
He thrust his sword at the Night King before him. As the two-handed sword approached the Night King, it glowed with golden light, constantly dispelling the black mist emanating from the Night King. The sword pierced the Night King's body, penetrating about halfway before becoming stuck in its hard muscles, and black blood flowed continuously from the wound.
Rhodes tried to pull out his sword, but the Night King forced Baron back with a whirlwind slash, also sending Rhodes flying as he was trying to draw his sword.
The Night King flapped his wings and flew toward Rhodes. Before Rhodes could even stand up, the Night King's greatsword was already raised high and about to fall.
In desperation, he could only cross his arms to block, and just then, Hammer's warhammer suddenly flew in front of him.
The warhammer flying through the air deflected the Night King's greatsword, which then struck the ground beside Rhodes, creating a small crater.
While the Night King was drawing his sword from the ground, Rhodes stood up and unleashed a powerful, internally charged One-Finger Divine Skill at its waist.
The finger pierced the Night King's waist, and it roared in pain before slapping Rhodes across the face.
Rhodes tumbled several times in the air before landing on the ground. The Night King's attack hadn't caused much damage to Rhodes, who was wearing dragon scale armor and was proficient in the Iron Shirt and Golden Bell techniques, but he felt like his fingers were about to break, which hurt much more than when he poked a tree trunk before.
He wiped the black blood off his fingers and stood up. He saw that Baron and Hammer both had magic similar to flame cloaks, but the flames were golden, which must have been added by the two priestesses behind them.
Faced with the two figures cloaked in flames, the Night King was forced to retreat, unable to confront them head-on.
Seeing that Baron and Hammer could now handle the Night King, Rhodes decided to try his luck with a lottery before facing it again...
