The Last Mr. Dongguo

Chapter 31 Visit

Cheng Luan was taken away by Bai Xin. Li Mengying wanted to chase after him, but Fei Li stopped her. The two returned to the cabin and analyzed everything that had happened that night.

"Feili, what's going on? Why did Cheng Luan admit to being the murderer? Isn't that too strange?" Li Mengying looked puzzled, her face showing fatigue from staying up all night. She kept tapping her forehead with her right fingers and paced back and forth in the small room.

"Was Cheng Luan acting strangely last night?"

"Something's wrong?" Fei Li's reminder reminded Li Mengying of their conversation.

"My problem is nothing compared to yours; I can handle it myself. Haha, once this is all over, I'll treat you to dinner..."

"I believe in Fei Li, and I believe in you. Please believe in me too..."

"He told us to trust him and that he could handle it."

"I believe we can solve this..."

Fei Li kept repeating the keywords Li Mengying had mentioned, which made Li Mengying realize that Cheng Luan must have his own reasons. However, Fei Li suddenly brought up what happened last night, making her cheeks burn. But seeing Fei Li's serious expression, she knew he didn't care. This left her with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow.

"How did you get through that day? How did you meet Cheng Luan, and how did you finally find me? I need you to tell me in detail."

Li Mengying was still grappling with the events of last night when Fei Li's series of questions pulled her back to the memories of that day.

"Actually, it's nothing much. When I was still in the locked room, I suddenly heard some strange voices telling me that to get the answer and get out of here, I had to help him solve a case. I tried to contact you using a code, but I didn't get a response. Then, the mysterious person told me the time and place of the case, and that's how I ended up here. At first, I didn't see Cheng Luan, and I was a bit scared because I was alone. I thought I was the only one solving the case, but I didn't expect to meet Cheng Luan in the end. It was Cheng Luan who told me there was internet here and that I could use the system to find you. Also, it was Cheng Luan who found this little house."

"In other words, Cheng Luan has more information than we do. Judging from his behavior last night and his attitude towards Bai Xin, he may have met with the murderer."

"Impossible, how could this be?"

"In the real case, Richard Chase was thin and appeared somewhat malnourished. He had a history of mental illness and had taken medication. He was withdrawn and disliked interacting with both men and women. Given Cheng Luan's skills, it would have been impossible for the murderer to escape unless Cheng Luan deliberately let him go. Of course, you and I, and Bai Xin, were not involved in the real case. If this is a deliberate hoax by a mysterious person, then it's just another trap."

"So what do we do next?"

"Since Bai Xin here knows Cheng Luan, he must also know us. This is a good thing for us."

"You mean to get to the heart of the case through Bai Xin?"

"That's right, to get involved in the case as a consultant and to participate in the investigation openly and legitimately."

With everything prepared, Fei Li and Li Mengying began their operation. Although their opponent was Bai Xin, this wasn't the real world. Just in case, Fei Li had a backup plan. He had Li Mengying use the internet to monitor both crime scenes, creating a five-kilometer radius around the midpoint connecting the two scenes. Additionally, they hacked into Bai Xin's computer and retrieved all the firsthand information about the case. After reviewing it carefully, Fei Li had a basic grasp of his entire plan.

This case, identified as a branch of a drug trafficking ring, relied heavily on intelligence provided by undercover officer Shui Mingyue. During the investigation, a smaller faction within the drug cartel, long oppressed by their superiors and suffering financial losses, secretly contacted a buyer and arranged a transaction. However, a conflict erupted during the deal. The buyer not only stole all the drugs but also killed the deliveryman. Shui Mingyue's investigation revealed the true cause was an internal purge within the drug cartel. Sensing the danger of betrayal, the core members secretly eliminated the rebellious force. According to intelligence, the person responsible for this clandestine operation was Cheng Luan.

After reviewing the entire document, Li Mengying concluded that it was a trap set for Cheng Luan. After discussing it with Fei Li, she decided to follow the clues herself to track down the drug dealers, while Fei Li would personally meet with Bai Xin as an advisor to visit Cheng Luan.

Fei Li's meeting went very smoothly. Bai Xin readily agreed to Fei Li's request and quickly arranged for the two to meet.

The detention center was a place Fei Li frequented. Each time he came, he was filled with confidence and a sense of mission, believing himself to be the key to unlocking others' minds. However, this time, Fei Li felt a sense of gloom and loneliness.

The door opened.

Cheng Luan sat there quietly, playing with a plastic water cup in his hand.

The scene before Fei Li's eyes was stimulating; it was strikingly similar to the real Richard Chase.

Cheng Luan sat there expressionless, his eyes vacant. He showed no interest in Fei Li sitting opposite him, no surprise, no joy, and no fear.

"Cheng Luan, are you alright?"

Fei Li abandoned his usual methods of interrogating prisoners, starting the conversation in the tone of an old friend. In his heart, Cheng Luan and Li Mengying were the people he trusted most.

"Don't ask anymore, I killed someone. But it was out of necessity."

There was no other way!

These four words gave Fei Li a sense of hope. He excitedly leaned forward, closing the distance between himself and Cheng Luan once again, like two children sharing a secret, afraid that their words would be overheard by a third person.

What's troubling you?

"I need to survive. Someone has poisoned my soap dish, leaving me on the verge of death. The only way to live is to kill and drink blood."

The answer shocked Fei Li; it was not the answer he wanted to hear at all.

"What? You don't believe me?"

"What nonsense are you talking about?"

"Haven't you heard the saying? Everyone has a soap dish. If you pick up the soap and find the bottom is dry, then it's fine; but if there's something sticky on the bottom, it means someone has poisoned you. Every morning when I get up, there's something sticky on the bottom of my soap. Tell me, have I been poisoned? Hahaha."

The laughter was ghostly, making people feel scared.

"I kill in self-defense. I have no choice but to do it to survive. No one in this world is truly good to you. No matter how hard you try, it may be insignificant in other people's eyes. Before each murder, I hear a mysterious voice that tells me I must kill immediately. After receiving the 'order,' I go to find my target. Finally, I drink their blood."

Cheng Luan was like a completely different person, immersed in his own world, talking about the murderer.

"Stop acting, what are you even talking about?"

Cheng Luan didn't answer. He laughed again, a laugh so relaxed, so free...
