A Scroll of Infinite Glory

Chapter 22 The True Form of Ancient Paintings

After nightfall, Guan Luoyang dug a pit under the bridge and buried the instructor there.

Ma Zhixing helped push the soil down and tamped the mound down to make it more compact, saying, "I see there seems to be a broken tree over there. Should we get some wood to make a tombstone?"

Guan Luoyang considered for a moment, then shook his head: "Never mind, do you know his real name?"

"I've only ever heard of his nickname."

Ma Zhixing said dejectedly, "But I know he has dealt with many high-ranking members of the alliance, so perhaps the chairman knows his real name."

Guan Luoyang said, "Then come back to see him and erect a monument for him when you succeed in the future. He should be even happier then."

As he spoke, Guan Luoyang pulled out the boat ticket hidden in his belt. He had been running underwater for a while and was soaked to the bone. The boat ticket was also soaked, but fortunately it wasn't crumpled. After drying it for a few hours, it should still be usable.

He handed the boat ticket to Ma Zhixing, who took it but his gaze fell on his wound. He said, "This is a gunshot wound. We need to find a way to remove the bullet and stitch it up, otherwise you will continue to lose blood."

Guan Luoyang calmly said, "It's alright. One of these bullets is about an inch into my flesh, and the other is stuck in my bone. I've already used my strength to lock them in place, so there won't be any major problems for now. If I take them out now, I'm afraid they'll rupture and bleed more when I punch them later."

Actually, it hurts a lot when a bullet hits you, and it hurts even more when it gets stuck inside, but Guan Luoyang has gotten used to the feeling. He didn't want to talk about this topic anymore, so he went over and picked up the long brocade box from the ground.

"Unfortunately, the ancient painting was destroyed by water. What is the history of this painting?"

Ma Zhixing was preoccupied, sometimes looking at the instructor's grave, sometimes thinking of his own father. He only came back to his senses after being asked twice.

"It is said to be a work by Wu Daozi of the Tang Dynasty, depicting his disciple Lu Lengjia. However, there is no mention of Wu Daozi in any records. Moreover, it is rather strange for a master to paint his disciple. Some people suspect that it was created by someone in later generations under his name."

Wu Daoxuan is Wu Daozi.

Wu Daozi came from a poor family. The name Daozi refers to the fact that his mother gave birth to him on the road.

However, he was very talented in calligraphy and painting. He first learned calligraphy and then switched to painting, integrating the brushstrokes of calligraphy into his paintings. His brushwork was elegant and versatile, which made him famous. Emperor Xuanzong of that time personally bestowed upon him the name "Xuan".

Wu Daozi's life was full of legends, and his paintings have a powerful, moving quality.

For example, when he painted a picture of hell at Jingyun Temple, the old monk Xuanzong of Jingyun Temple said: "After Wu Sheng painted this picture of hell, everyone in the capital saw it and they all feared sin and did good deeds. The butchers and vendors in the two markets could not sell fish and meat."

During the Tang Dynasty, there was a saying about the "Three Perfections and Five Sages," and Wu Daozi was known as the Sage of Painting.

Ma Zhixing first put the roster away, then walked over and opened the brocade box. Sure enough, the painting inside was soaked through, with a bluish stain showing through the back of the paper.

"Strange, I remember this is a traditional Chinese ink painting, so why are there blue parts?"

He became suspicious, thinking that the foreigner had chased after the instructor because of the painting, which led to the instructor's death, so he told Guan Luoyang about it.

The two took out the ancient painting, wanting to see what it was all about.

When the scroll is unrolled, the front shows a scholar with his sleeves tied and a brush in hand, painting on the wall. The ink marks are sometimes thick and sometimes thin, and slightly out of shape, but there is not a trace of blue ink. When the painting is turned over, the blue ink mark is still there.

It was obvious that something was hidden inside the drawing paper, and it only became apparent after it was soaked in water.

Ma Zhixing carefully scraped open one end with his fingernail, peeling off a layer on the back to reveal a fragment of a painting hidden inside.

The clouds in the picture roll like flames, and the flames bloom like flowers. Against the backdrop of several towering peaks in the distance, a majestic blue divine bird, as imposing as a mountain, spreads its wings and strikes down from the sky.

The painting breaks off below the divine bird, with jagged, uneven tears.

The two saw the painting at the same time. Ma Zhixing didn't think much of it, but Guan Luoyang next to him suddenly groaned, took two steps back, and raised his hand to cover his eyes.

Ma Zhixing asked in surprise, "What's wrong with you?"

His anxious voice reached Guan Luoyang's ears, sometimes near, sometimes far, sometimes grand and high-pitched, sometimes overlapping, and sometimes low and deep, making it difficult to hear clearly.

This small bridge archway, surrounded by the familiar world, seems to be undergoing a rapid, silent, and unpredictable transformation.

A dizzying sensation washed over Guan Luoyang, and he instinctively braced himself in a stance. A stinging, aching sensation seeped into his eyes, enveloping them and flowing downwards.

The more fluid it flows, the hotter it becomes, seeping into the flesh and bones, flowing from the shoulders to the arms, and finally gathering at the fingertips into an extreme tingling sensation.

Guan Luoyang felt a chill run down his spine and quickly moved his hands away from his face. For a moment, he felt as if everything that came near his hands would be torn apart and shattered.

In his still somewhat blurry vision, a real and unmistakable light emanated from his fingertips, crossed his wrist, and spread across his arm, forming intricate patterns of ancient bronze hues on his skin, extending all the way to his elbow.

call! ! !

The tattered scroll that Ma Zhixing was holding spontaneously combusted.

He quickly threw it away, looked at the firelight on the ground, and then at Guan Luoyang's arms.

Just a glance at the pattern evokes images of jade goblets and necklaces painted on murals in a dimly lit ancient temple.

"So that's what that foreigner wanted."

The scales and cold aura on that foreigner's body seemed to flash before my eyes again.

Ma Zhixing's throat became dry with nervousness, and amidst his sorrow and hatred, a glimmer of hope was brewing within him.

That foreigner was truly invulnerable to swords and spears; he was beaten like that and didn't seem to have any injuries. If Guan Luoyang could also obtain that kind of power, who could stop them from boarding the ship and sending away the roster?

After a long while, Guan Luoyang, whose condition had stabilized, tried a few more times and shattered Ma Zhixing's illusions.

"The warm current in my body can only stay between my shoulders, neck and arms, and I don't feel that I can create frost or even fire out of thin air."

Ma Zhixing was somewhat disheartened and said, "It's probably because that foreigner had a longer time to obtain it, and his abilities may have come from the other half of the map."

Guan Luoyang said softly, "This is already an unexpected surprise. Even without this, I would have let you board the ship at dawn anyway."

Feeling uneasy, Ma Zhixing asked, "What do you want to do?"

"The imperial court will deploy defenses and conduct inspections in the south in order to obtain the roster, but besides the roster, there are other things in Guangzhou that they cannot ignore."

Guan Luoyang raised his gaze, looking in a certain direction, his teeth clenched with a chilling intent. "I will make a big enough commotion to create an opportunity for you."
