Eternal Night: I Have a Legendary Navigator's Manual
Chapter 2, Security Protocol No. 3
"Warning! Warning! Contact with control tower has been completely lost!"
"Warning! Warning! Black fog concentration exceeds safety threshold!"
"Warning! If a safe zone cannot be reached within twenty minutes, Security Protocol No. 13 will be automatically executed!"
"Thank you for your sacrifice and cooperation!"
An extremely shrill electronic synthesized female voice kept drilling into Zhong Xu's ears, making his eardrums ache.
Zhong Xu felt his head was a complete mess. He tried to open his eyes, but was shocked to see a beautifully bound book in front of him amidst the chaos.
The large gold lettering on the cover invigorated him.
Kuroshio Navigator's Handbook
He opened the book on his own, and its contents came into view.
[First time arriving in a high-concentration area, new terrain has been recorded, knowledge point +1]
Is this... my cheat code?!
In the first few days, Zhong Xu tried various methods to see if he could unlock his cheat code.
But in the end, he gained nothing, and he was prepared to honestly survive through his own efforts.
Unexpectedly, the cheat code appeared at this moment!
He tried to flip through it with his mind. The original page was skipped, and a new page appeared in front of him. It was clearly a map.
The map was almost entirely black, as if waiting for Zhong Xu to explore it, with only a very small circular area shown in detail.
The golden dot at the very center seems to be his current location.
Just as he was about to zoom in on the map, the piercing electronic synthesized sound blared again, startling him awake as if from a nightmare. He abruptly opened his eyes and sat up from the ground.
In an instant, the pain emanating from all over his body stimulated his nerves, making him involuntarily grit his teeth.
Ignoring the warnings that kept playing in his ears, Zhong Xu looked out through his protective helmet. The thick black fog reduced his vision to less than ten meters.
He found himself lying on a pile of fine concrete rubble, and at the edge of his vision, something seemed to be moving through the black mist.
His memories flooded back, and he realized he should have been sitting in the exploration vehicle.
Did I... get thrown out of the car?
He struggled to stand up, his body almost falling apart, while his other hand instinctively reached for the sonar plotter on his helmet.
In this dense black fog, to see further, one must use this device, which allows the sonar to measure the surrounding scene and automatically plot it on the helmet's visor.
However, the sonar plotter on his helmet is of a very low quality, only able to plot a scene at most 30 meters away with a 180-degree view, and the refresh rate is a pitiful 90 Hz.
It's barely usable.
As Zhong Xu raised his hand, he tried to mentally summon the "Navigator's Handbook".
Although everything that had happened before seemed like a dream, he still held onto a sliver of hope that maybe it wasn't all an illusion.
When the manual resurfaced, even though his muscles were groaning in pain, his excitement did not diminish in the slightest.
As he turned the pages with his mind, the map in the manual reappeared before him.
Zhong Xu tried zooming in on the map, and the result surprised him even more.
Originally, he only thought that he could zoom in on the map to see the details, and then combine it with the sonar plotter on his helmet, so that the two could corroborate each other and allow him to confirm the environment outside his field of vision.
But when he zoomed in on the map to its maximum, he discovered that everything recorded on the map was presented in the first person.
The original line of sight, which was barely thirty meters, was extended to about one hundred meters away.
Compared to the plotter with only red lines, the map in that manual made the black fog that had shrouded his eyes seem like a veil, no longer able to obstruct his vision.
Wow! This thing is so useful?!
While Zhong Xu was amazed, he did not forget that he was still in a dangerous situation, and the warning sound in his ears kept him on high alert at all times.
Looking around, there were two exploration vehicles parked about fifty meters away, and two people next to the vehicles seemed to be looking for something.
Roy and Lilia! They didn't abandon me!
Despite the pain all over his body, Zhong Xu forced himself to run quickly toward the two of them.
"Don't shoot! It's me, Zhong Xu!"
As Zhong Xu approached, he saw a flash of fear across Lilia's face before she raised her weapon and aimed it at him.
He immediately shouted at the top of his lungs to avoid being accidentally injured by his teammates.
This made Zhong Xu a little scared, as he had almost forgotten that the two people only had a low-level sonar plotter.
The two of them could most likely only sense something rapidly approaching from the black mist thirty meters away. Rather than thinking it was Zhong Xu running over, it was clearly more likely to be a monster.
Hearing Zhong Xu's familiar voice on the communicator, Lilia finally breathed a sigh of relief.
But just as she was about to say something, a small figure darted out from under the exploration vehicle behind her.
The speed was so fast that Lilia didn't have time to react, and she didn't even have time to call Roy for help.
She saw a huge claw slash at her face. She tried to raise her gun to fight back, but it was too late!
The monster's terrifying blow could shatter her helmet and tear her face apart!
"Bang!"
At that critical moment, a gunshot rang out, accompanied by churning black mist. A bullet flew from afar and pierced the chest cavity of the small monster, exploding into a spray of blood.
The monster fell to the ground and remained motionless.
That shot was fired by Zhong Xu from a distance. If he hadn't been able to see everything happening in the black mist, that monster would have already brutally murdered Lilia!
This is the terror of the black fog. In extremely low visibility, beware of those monsters known for their speed and stealth!
[First kill of a creeper, information recorded, knowledge point +1]
Having noted down the information that flashed through the manual, Zhong Xu quickly ran towards that direction.
Are you alright?
Roy noticed the commotion and rushed over, only to find a corpse on the ground and a frightened Lilia.
"Did...you fire that shot?"
"No... I didn't fire, it was..."
Lilia raised her hand and pointed in another direction. At the same time, Zhong Xu's figure, marked with his teammates' symbols, came into view.
To be precise, it appeared in the image drawn by the sonar plotter in front of them.
"Zhong Xu... how did you aim that shot just now?!"
"Never mind that for now, time is running out. How's the exploration vehicle?"
Zhong Xu did not respond to Lilia's question. He could sense her surprise, but that was not the most important thing right now.
The alarm in his ears never stopped, urging him on like a death knell.
"Warning! Warning! Black fog concentration exceeds safety threshold!"
"Warning! If a safe zone cannot be reached within seventeen minutes, Security Protocol No. 13 will be automatically executed!"
