Alien invasion? Luckily, I'm Superman.

Chapter 15 Federal Vice President

"Oh, you're finally awake!"

Commander Zhao Deming pushed open the door and walked in. He saw Su Mo sitting up, propped up on the edge of the bed, her steps quickening slightly.

When we found you, we all thought you had died.

He walked to the bedside and looked Su Mo up and down.

"You were covered in burns, charred black all over. You also had multiple fractures. If you hadn't been breathing..."

He didn't continue, but simply shook his head and sat down on the edge of the bed.

Su Mo opened her mouth, her throat dry, and asked the question that had been weighing on her mind.

"Commander Zhao, what happened to Earth after the final spaceships left? Was it a victory? What happened in the past month?"

His voice sounded somewhat urgent.

Although Commander Zhao's expression showed that the crisis had passed, the fact that his strength had weakened left him with a lingering worry that he couldn't shake.

Commander Zhao waved his hand, signaling him not to rush.

"Comrade Su Mo, don't worry."

He spoke slowly and deliberately, sitting down on a chair by the bed as he spoke.

"After you saved the Earth, we repelled the invading ground forces. They lost their will to fight, making it easier than we thought."

Upon hearing this, Su Mo relaxed her shoulders a little.

Commander Zhao continued speaking only after seeing that he had relaxed.

"After the fleet left, the invaders on the ground lost their will to fight. Without orbital fire suppression, we mobilized global forces and took them out one by one."

He paused.

"The satellites that were later relaunched observed you floating in space. We used an alien transport ship to rescue you."

At this point, Commander Zhao's tone changed. He looked down at his hands, as if organizing his thoughts.

"Actually, we weren't much of a help."

His voice lowered.

"After we saved you, our doctors couldn't cut your skin at all. We tried everything, but nothing worked."

He looked up at Su Mo and gave a wry smile.

"Later, someone discovered that sunlight was useful to you. So we could only focus some sunlight to help you recover."

He chuckled self-deprecatingly.

"How useless, isn't it? It can't help the heroes who saved humanity at all."

Su Mo wanted to say something, but Commander Zhao had already stood up and glanced at his watch.

"Okay, let's stop talking now."

He patted his trouser leg.

"The Earth Federation has been established, and I have a meeting to attend. You should rest now and won't disturb you any longer."

He walked to the door, turned back and pointed in the direction of the bed.

"Press the bell on the left if you need anything. Someone is always ready. Don't hesitate to make your request."

After saying that, he nodded to Su Mo, pushed open the door, and went out.

The room instantly became empty, leaving only Su Mo alone.

Hero?

The thought popped into Su Mo's mind, and then she smiled to herself and shook her head.

He didn't know if he could be considered a hero; heroes don't usually end up in such a sorry state.

Also, he was somewhat surprised that the Earth Federation was established so quickly.

Although the world's structure is different from that of the previous life, and the countries are more integrated, there are still many conflicts.

Major powers still dislike each other, while smaller nations struggle to survive in the cracks, their interests entangled in a complex web of conflicting interests. How could the Earth Federation have been established after only a month in a coma?

As he thought about it, Su Mo felt sleepy. Anyway, he couldn't do much in his weak body, so he lay back down, pulled the blanket up to his chest, and closed his eyes.

The sunlight streaming through the window warmed my face.

For the next week, Su Mo lived a very simple life.

By basking in the sun every day and chatting with Commander Zhao, my health gradually recovered.

The sunlight was indeed effective. He could feel his strength returning little by little, like parched land being watered again.

Commander Zhao came almost every day. Sometimes he would stay for half an hour, sometimes only ten minutes, chat for a few minutes, and then leave. Su Mo slowly pieced together the events of the past month from his words.

The Earth Federation is currently extremely busy. The damage caused by the alien invasion is severe, and the situation is not optimistic.

Urban reconstruction, refugee resettlement, and rubble clearing—each was a massive undertaking. Ironically, the integration process with the Federation went quite smoothly.

The reason for the smooth progress is simple: many of the high-ranking officials who originally opposed integration were dead. Those who remained, having survived this catastrophe, were all looking to stick together for mutual support, naturally reducing their conflicts.

"There's one more thing,"

When Commander Zhao talked about it one day, his tone was filled with undisguised pride.

"The Federal Navy has towed back your frigate that you left on the moon. A complete alien warship."

Su Mo remembered that frigate. He was the one who set the course and sent it to the moon.

"Researchers have already begun their studies."

Commander Zhao said, "Given time, Earth will also be able to build its own faster-than-light spaceship."

Su Mo nodded. This was the best news he could get.

In short, everything is moving in a positive direction. The Earth is thriving.

One afternoon, Su Mo was sitting in the courtyard basking in the sun.

His body has almost fully recovered. Although he's still far from his peak condition, some of his superhuman strength has been restored. He can fly again, use heat rays, and his freezing breath has returned.

Commander Zhao walked over from the other end of the corridor, carrying a small stool. He placed the stool next to Su Mo, plopped down, and the stool legs made a crisp sound on the cement floor.

"Su Mo, you've rested enough."

He turned his head to look at Su Mo, "Let me take you to the Federal Conference to make an appearance."

Su Mo was stunned for a moment.

"Huh? What am I supposed to do there?"

Commander Zhao burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the courtyard. He was clearly pleased with the surprised expression on Su Mo's face.

"Of course, I'll speak as the Vice President of the Federation."

He spoke as if it were perfectly reasonable.

"I didn't tell you before because you weren't feeling well. But you're fine now."

"What!"

Su Mo nearly jumped up from his chair. He suspected Commander Zhao was joking, but the other man's expression didn't seem to be mocking him. Vice Chairman of the Federation? The Vice Chairman of the Earth Federation? He'd never even been a dormitory head; how could he possibly manage this?

Why is that?

His voice even changed, becoming somewhat tense.

Commander Zhao stopped laughing and his tone became calm.

"Oh, of course it's because you saved the world."

He paused, then changed the subject, his tone becoming slightly sarcastic.

"Hmph, it's because they're afraid of you. Who wouldn't be afraid of a god like you on earth? Giving you a vice-chairmanship is just a way to curry favor with you. I think it's just a way to appease a beggar."

Su Mo hurriedly waved his hand.

"Alright, Commander Zhao, stop joking. I never thought about getting any reward, nor did I want to be some kind of god on earth. Let's just forget about it."

He genuinely didn't want it. The whole "vice president" thing sounded like a headache. He'd rather sit in front of his computer staring blankly at the cursor than sit in a meeting room staring blankly at representatives from various countries.

Commander Zhao looked at him, sighed, and softened his tone.

"Alright, you can have the vice-chairmanship then. You don't have to do anything; just consider it an honorary title."

He leaned closer and lowered his voice by half an octave.

Having a position can also prevent some bad situations.

Su Mo understood.

Someone has some bad intentions. It seems there are villains in real life just like in comics, always looking to cause trouble. This left him speechless, but not surprised. That's human nature; regardless of whether there's an alien invasion or not, there's always someone plotting something behind the scenes.

He was silent for a few seconds, then nodded.

"Alright."

Commander Zhao patted him on the shoulder and stood up.

"Come on, I'll show you around."

Su Mo followed Commander Zhao to the location of the Federal Conference.

The meeting was held in a reinforced building, with sandbags and air-raid shelters piled up outside, but the inside was very clean. People of all nationalities walked quickly through the corridors, speaking different languages.

Su Mo, wearing a dark suit prepared by Commander Zhao, walked down the corridor, feeling like everyone was watching him. Perhaps it was just his imagination. Or perhaps not.

The conference hall was large and circular, with seats arranged in concentric circles, like a small stadium. When Su Mo entered, many people stood up; some nodded at him, some applauded, and some simply watched him quietly.

Su Mo wasn't used to this kind of scene. He waved to everyone and followed Commander Zhao to his seat.

The vice chairman's seat was in the first row, near the center. A nameplate on the table read "Su Mo, Vice Chairman of the Earth Federation." Looking at the nameplate, he felt a sense of unreality; in his daze, he realized he hadn't heard a single word of what was being discussed at the meeting.

Later, Commander Zhao took him to see his office. It wasn't large, but the windows were big, and the sunlight was plentiful. A new computer sat on the desk, and the filing shelf next to it was empty. Su Mo stood by the window, looking at the city being rebuilt outside, unsure of what to think.

"By the way," Commander Zhao said casually, leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets, "I am now the Commander of the Federal Navy."

Su Mo turned around and looked at him.

Commander Zhao smiled.

"Being near the water tower gives you an advantage," he said. "I recommended you, so I..."

He didn't finish his sentence, but he conveyed the meaning.
