Chapter 19 Installing a Bug at Vought Headquarters
The car stopped in front of a nightclub. The butcher led them into a room on the second floor, which contained only a table and a chair. A computer sat on the table, its screen lit.
The butcher sat down, opened a surveillance video, and turned the screen toward Hughie.
In the video, the locomotive is sitting on a sofa, surrounded by several scantily clad people whose faces are obscured. The locomotive's voice comes from a speaker, in a relaxed tone typical of casual social conversation.
"That woman... on the road... I didn't even have time to brake... I swallowed a tooth... haha..."
Then came a burst of laughter.
The video ends here.
Hughie stared at the now-black screen, his lips trembling. His eyes were red, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, and he looked like a spring stretched to its limit, ready to snap at any moment.
The butcher closed his laptop, his voice reverting to its dry, businesslike tone.
"I need your help. The Vought Group will give you a settlement and have you sign a confidentiality agreement. When you sign the agreement, I want you to demand that the Train apologize to you in person. They won't refuse. You'll be in the Seven's meeting room then, and you'll have plenty of time to install a bugging device."
He took a small black disc, smaller than a fingernail, from his pocket, placed it on the table, and pushed it towards Hughie.
"It's this size. Just stick it under the table or behind the cabinet, anywhere, as long as it's in the meeting room."
Hughie stared at the small round disc and remained silent for a moment.
Then he reached out and picked it up, clutching it in his hand.
"it is good."
His voice was a little hoarse, but very firm.
Su Mo stood to the side, remaining silent. He had initially intended to say that he could eavesdrop using his super hearing, so there was no need for such trouble. But then he reconsidered; only he knew what his super hearing revealed. There was no recording, no physical evidence, and even if he recounted it, it would only be one side of the story. The Wotech Group's public relations department could tear these "rumors" to shreds.
……
The next day, Hughie stood at the entrance of the Water Corporation headquarters.
The building was very tall, its glass curtain wall gleaming a cool white light in the sunlight. A giant sculpture of the seven stood at the entrance, with Homelander in the very center, his cape billowing in the wind, his smile exactly the same as in the poster.
Hughie took a deep breath, pushed open the door, and went inside.
The lobby was spacious, with marble floors that reflected the crystal chandelier overhead. The receptionist wore a well-tailored uniform and had a professional yet aloof smile.
"Mr. Hugh Campbell?" The receptionist confirmed his identity and pointed to a glass door on one side of the lobby. "Your lawyer is waiting for you. Please follow me."
A middle-aged man in a dark gray suit approached, shook hands, smiled, and introduced himself as the legal counsel for the Water Group. His tone was gentle, his wording precise, and every step he took walked the fine line between "we care about you" and "please don't cause trouble."
He led Hughie through the corridor, into the elevator, and pressed the button for the Seven's floor.
Hughie's heart skipped a beat when the elevator doors opened. The corridor was quiet, the lighting was soft, and a huge photo of the seven men hung on the wall.
The lawyer led him into a conference room. The room was large, with an oval table in the center and a huge Vought Group logo hanging on the wall.
"Hughie, we deeply sympathize with your situation." The lawyer pulled out a chair for him to sit down. "We agree to your request. The train is already on its way and will arrive soon. You can wait a bit."
Hughie smiled and nodded.
A locomotive. The world's fastest man. On his way. But not yet. The world's fastest man, but his apology is late.
Hughie's fingers clenched under the table, but the smile on his face remained unchanged.
"Excuse me, I need to use the restroom." He stood up and walked out of the conference room quite naturally.
Su Mo and Butcher were in a black sedan not far from the Vought headquarters. The car was parked on a side street, about two hundred meters from the main entrance, sandwiched between two large trucks, inconspicuous. Butcher had thoroughly trained Hughie on how to install the bugging device the night before, and he trusted Hughie wouldn't cause any problems.
Su Mo leaned against the carriage wall, his super vision penetrating the Vought headquarters building, and saw Hughie push open the bathroom door and go inside.
Then he froze.
A transparent figure followed Hughie into the restroom.
Not completely invisible. Under Su Mo's super vision, the figure appeared as a refracted surface in the air, its outline barely discernible. Humanoid, adult male, naked, completely unclothed. He walked casually, even somewhat lazily, like someone strolling around in their own home.
Su Mo recognized him—the Invisible Man. But why was the Invisible Man naked when he went into the bathroom? What was he doing following Hughie in there?
Su Mo's mind raced for a moment, and he quickly came to a conclusion that disgusted him. The invisible man was a pervert who had deliberately followed them in, and he was naked to achieve the invisibility effect.
Su Mo was right. The Invisible Man was a complete pervert who spent all his time spying in the toilet to satisfy his disgusting fetish.
"What's wrong?" Butcher noticed that Su Mo's expression was off, put down his binoculars, and turned to look at him.
Su Mo didn't have time to explain much and said directly, "Quickly tell Hughie that there's an invisible person in the bathroom. Be careful not to give yourself away."
Butcher's expression changed instantly. He didn't ask "How did you know?" or hesitate. He immediately took out his phone from his pocket, quickly typed a message, and pressed send.
In the bathroom, Hughie had just locked the door and was standing in front of the sink.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. He casually pulled it out and glanced at the screen. Butcher's message was just one line: "Someone's in the bathroom, invisible, next to you. Don't turn around, get out."
Hughie's back stiffened instantly. Alerted, Hughie immediately became alert and quietly left the bathroom, still without taking out the listening device hidden in the back of his phone case.
The Invisible Man stood in the corner of the restroom, arms crossed, watching Hughie leave.
When Hughie returned to the conference room, only the agreement remained on the table. He sat back down, calmly, and quietly removed the bug from his phone case, placing it under the table.
About seven or eight minutes later, the locomotive finally pushed open the door and came in. Hughie stood up, extended his hand, and shook hands with the locomotive. The locomotive's hand was strong, and he had a big smile. He said, "Hey, brother, sorry to have kept you waiting. There was a bit of traffic on the way."
The world's fastest man. Stuck in traffic.
Hughie smiled and said it was nothing.
The train driver patted him on the shoulder and sat down across the conference table. The lawyer who came in with the train driver began reading the terms of the confidentiality agreement. Hughie listened with his head down, his expression the one one would expect from a young man who had lost his girlfriend: sadness, restraint, and an effort to maintain his dignity.
No one noticed the tiny, fleeting curve at the corner of his mouth.
The bugging device has been installed.
