Chapter 128 Negotiations in Prison
"Is Murphy right? Yes. Tim covered for his wife for months; that's incriminating evidence against anyone."
.
"But the problem is, Nolan's kill order hasn't been lifted yet, and the gangs could make a move at any time. For the Ministry of the Interior to be watching us at this time, what's the difference between that and stabbing us in the back?"
"So you think Murphy did it on purpose? Choosing this particular time?"
"Otherwise what?" Lopez sneered. "The Central Wilshire Precinct arrested more than forty gang members in one day. With such a big commotion, why did she have to come at this time of year?"
Li Wei thought for a moment and then said nothing more.
Los Angeles County Jail, hardened offender section.
The iron gate made a dull metallic clanging sound as the prison guard turned the key and opened the cell door.
Superintendent Gray's tall figure appeared in the doorway. He bowed slightly and walked into the small cell.
A middle-aged white man was sitting on the bed in the cell.
Kim Wandas.
Known as King Midas, the true leader of the Southern Front gangs, he is currently serving time in prison.
Three life sentences.
But he still controlled everything on the street.
Wandas slowly got up from the bed, looked Gray up and down, and gave a cryptic smile: "Someone told me that a policeman with negotiation authority is coming to see me."
Gray ignored his smile: "Enough nonsense. All you care about are those greenbacks. The LAPD cost you a lot of money today. Now, if you want to avoid serious injury, sit down and behave yourself."
Wandas' smile faded slightly, and after a few seconds of silence, he slowly sat back down.
Gray stood with his hands on his hips, looking down at him: "Listen, I reviewed the body camera footage. That girl tried to stab someone with a knife in front of my officers!"
He used mild force to stop her.
"There was no intention or action intended to be insulting. This isn't the first time your son has done this. His reaction was excessive. It's time to act like an adult and de-escalate the situation."
"How many years have you been on duty?" Wandas didn't answer his question, but instead asked a completely unrelated one.
Gray stared at him: "About twenty years."
"Then you should know that I can't retrieve the kill order!" Wandas' tone hardened. "The only way now is for Cole to recall it. Otherwise, my men will never respect him again."
"Is that so? Your leadership is rather pathetic." Gray remained unmoved. "Let me make this clear: I'm not here to negotiate. The business we shut down cost you a million. The assets we seized cost you three million. And this is just the beginning."
"Compared to dignity, these things are nothing!" Wandas's expression finally changed, his voice filled with suppressed anger.
Gray took a step forward, his voice low but carrying a strong sense of pressure: "Wandas, don't go too far. In half a day, we shut down seven of your business locations and imprisoned forty-six of your members."
"Imagine the damage the police would do to your hideout in San Diego and your hideout in San Josevik tomorrow."
He paused, then said, word by word, "I can keep destroying everything you've built—your son will personally bury everything you've created. Just because your son got yelled at by his girlfriend and sought revenge. Make the right choice and recall the kill order."
A long silence fell over the cell.
Police car 7-A-15 drives on the street.
Zoe gripped the steering wheel, her eyes constantly scanning both sides of the road.
He was completely focused, paying attention to his surroundings.
The voice from the dispatch center came through the walkie-talkie: "7-A-15, suspected theft. Location: Port Cristore, 1936."
Nolan reached for the walkie-talkie and pressed the answer button: "7-A-15, please indicate my vehicle for dispatch."
After saying that, he couldn't help but sigh: "I hate this feeling. It feels like everyone is fighting for me."
Nolan sat in the passenger seat, his gaze equally unwavering.
He nervously scanned the street.
After all, he had a kill order on him, and he could face danger if he wasn't careful.
We have no choice but to stay vigilant 24 hours a day.
Because of this, Nolan couldn't even sleep.
Zoe, while looking at the road, said, "The city's security patrols must continue as usual."
Zoe glanced at the rearview mirror as usual; a bread truck was following behind them.
She glanced at the rearview mirror again, her brows furrowing slightly.
A short while later, the van accelerated and overtook them, driving alongside their police car.
Inside the car sat two burly white men, their faces menacing, their eyes fixed on the two men in the police car.
Nolan's hand instinctively reached for his holster, pulled out his pistol, and placed it behind the car door, his expression tense.
Zoe also placed her hands on the butt of the gun, her entire body tense.
The burly man in the bread truck stared at them for a few moments, as if trying to confirm something.
A few seconds later, the bread truck made a right turn and drove off the main road.
Both of them breathed a sigh of relief.
Nolan put the gun away: "Ah—this really is—"
"An exciting moment," Zoe finished speaking for him.
"I was going to call it a terrifying moment," Nolan said with a wry smile, putting his gun away. "Looks like I'll have to get used to these kinds of scenes."
Zoe's gaze returned to the front, her tone calm yet carrying a hint of someone who had been there before: "Let me tell you—back then—"
I—uh. When I was first stationed in Baghdad, I often had headaches. It took me a few days to realize the reason—
My eyes darted around, constantly watching for trouble.
"I have a headache right now," Nolan added.
Zoe smiled and said, "I haven't changed my habits, but my headaches are gradually stopping."
Just then, the walkie-talkie crackled to life again: "7-A-15, find Superintendent Gray on the second band."
Zoe pressed the answer button: "Received."
She switched to the second frequency band: "Anderson."
Gray's voice came through the walkie-talkie, and although it had a static-like quality, there was a rare hint of ease in his tone: "The plan worked. Midas forced his son Cole to remove the kill order."
The carriage was silent for a second.
Then, the two of them simultaneously let out a long sigh of relief.
Zoe leaned back in her chair, a smile playing on her lips: "Looks like you're back to being a rookie."
Nolan breathed a sigh of relief and couldn't help but look up and say, "Thank God!"
Zoe picked up the walkie-talkie: "Thank you, Superintendent."
"It's my honor," Gray said, and then the communication ended.
Nolan turned to Zoe: "So, it seems our strange partnership is over?"
Zoe rolled her eyes at him: "Damn it, no way. We still have a theft case to handle."
After she finished speaking, she pointed ahead.
Zoe smiled helplessly, stepped on the gas, and the police car headed toward Port Crystal 1936.
