America, starting as a trainee police officer

Chapter 37 The Situation is Serious

Hawke did not reply to Nolan, and the radio remained silent.

"Hawk?"

Upon hearing Nolan's voice again, the man, who felt a deep connection with Nolan, finally couldn't help but pick up the walkie-talkie: "Nolan, I've never been good at giving up on myself, you know that without me saying it."

"Many men at Pelican Bay Jail in California go to jail for easily giving in to their demands."

Hearing Hawke's words, Nolan picked up the walkie-talkie again: "So what? Do you want to follow in his footsteps?"

"No! That's absolutely impossible!" Hawke's tone was resolute.

"Hawk, what will you do if you're cornered? Do you really think you can escape capture and live a carefree life?"

"Nolan! Didn't you pay attention in class at the police academy? This is just a tactical level, not a strategic one. In the long run, there's no need for communication. The key is to shake off the current pursuit. Once I've shaken you off, then we'll focus on the next step."

Upon hearing this, Nolan and Bishop exchanged a glance. He picked up the walkie-talkie again: "What about Logan? Have you made any arrangements for your son in your plans?"

Upon hearing Nolan mention his son, Hawke, who had been calmly conversing with him, finally became anxious: "Don't drag my son into this!"

At that moment, Logan, sitting next to Hawke, snatched the walkie-talkie from his father's hand: "Don't use me against my dad! He told me you'd try this! Everything you've said is a lie! It won't work! My dad and I are through thick and thin! We live together, we die together!"

Upon hearing Logan's words, the entire police force fell silent for a moment.

Li Wei couldn't help but sigh, "This little Deng has been trained quite well by Hawke."

He knows to side with his father when it matters.

"Logan, I'm not lying, your father truly has lost his self-control!"

Nolan wanted to continue persuading him.

But Hawke didn't want to continue talking to him. He knew how persuasive Nolan was, so he picked up the walkie-talkie and said, "Our conversation is over!"

After saying that, Hawke tossed the walkie-talkie aside.

"Logan?...Hawk?... "

Nolan was not giving up and called out several more times on the radio.

"He won't respond." Bishop shook his head.

...

In the police station, in front of a television that is broadcasting news of Hawke being chased by the police.

Gray stood there with a worried expression.

"Latest developments?"

Zoe also looked exhausted.

"Hawk deliberately avoids the spikes blocking the car, determined to escape. His son is determined to obey his father. What's the next step?"

Gray knew very well what would happen if things continued to develop, but out of his long-standing friendship with Hawke, he really didn't want it to come to that.

"This case has spread throughout the media, and prominent figures from all walks of life have urged the police to handle it carefully and not to relentlessly pursue Hawke, so that he will have the time and opportunity to devise a way to escape."

Zoe paused, then shook her head. "We can't take that risk, let alone endanger his son's life. Once you have the chance to find out, don't hesitate! Understand?"

She was at her wit's end; things had spiraled out of her control, and stopping Hawke at all costs was the only option.

Even if it means killing Hawke outright.

...

On the highway, more than a dozen police cars continued to drive close to Hawke's pickup truck.

It wasn't because I was worried about Xiao Deng being in the car.

Hawke had already been knocked over.

"Why did he choose this route?" Nolan was still trying to figure out Hawke's thoughts.

Because Hawke was listening to their radio, Tim had Lucy set up a group call to avoid being monitored by Hawke.

"What exactly is he planning?" Tim asked into the phone, gripping the steering wheel.

"We're trying to figure out, if you were in your shoes, what would your escape plan be?"

It was Bishop who answered.

"The first thing is to shake off aerial surveillance. What about you? How will you get away?" Tim blurted out without hesitation.

"Find a densely populated area, exhaust the police's resources, and then switch vehicles."

Bishop's voice came through.

Listening to the conversation between these TOs, Lucy couldn't help but retort, "Do all police officers have escape plans?"

"Most of them do," Bishop nodded.

Tim then looked at Lucy, who was staring at him incredulously: "In the sweltering summer heat, Hawke and I were on duty in the same police car. We were practically a lifesaver team, and we apprehended quite a few major criminals. We were talking about how to escape the police chase. The goal was to better track down suspects."

Listening to Tim's explanation, Li Wei felt it was just a cover-up.

It's nothing more than finding a legitimate reason to smooth over the guilt in one's heart for the evil thoughts in one's heart.

"The dome-shaped parking lot is packed with people going in and out; he's heading to the shopping mall!"

Nolan saw the road sign and immediately sensed something was wrong.

Hawke's behavior coincided with what Bishop had said.

He wanted to use the crowd to evade capture.

This will very likely result in injuries to innocent civilians.

"We must capture him immediately!"

Bishop shouted.

At the intersection, a civilian vehicle suddenly appeared in the chase, perfectly blocking the police car behind the pickup truck.

"The suspect has gone to the market street shopping center; we need available police support! It's an emergency!"

Tim picked up the walkie-talkie and called the front desk, not caring whether Hawke knew they had discovered his intentions.

...

Inside the shopping mall, Li Wei stood at the elevator entrance, scanning the densely packed crowd.

Hawke was hiding in the crowd with Logan.

"Hawk!"

Suddenly, a loud shout rang out.

Li Wei looked up and saw Nolan and Bishop shouting from the third floor.

Then they were seen chasing after Hawke and his son Logan.

They exchanged a glance with Lopez, who was standing next to them, and then the two of them started running.

But after taking only two steps, Li Wei stopped.

Hawke took his son into a women's clothing store and triggered the security system, which automatically shut down the entire store.

Even if he catches up, it won't make a difference.

"Let's go to the parking lot!"

After thinking for a moment, Li Wei walked in another direction.

"Wait, what are we doing in the parking lot?" Lopez asked as he caught up.

"If Hawke wants to escape, he can't possibly run out of Los Angeles on foot. He's most likely eyeing the cars in the parking lot. Let's go there ahead of time and wait for him!"

Upon hearing this, Lopez nodded and gave Levi a thumbs up: "Rookie, pretty smart!"

...

At a small exit of an underground parking lot.

Li Wei and Lopez were positioned on either side of the door.

This is the route they learned after asking the security guard.

If Hawke escaped from that store, he couldn't have gone through the front entrance again. So, the only route was to enter the mall through the back door and reach the parking lot.

"911? There's a man with a gun at Lundton Financial Center! Come quick!"

Hawke spoke in a panicked tone, rambling incoherently into the phone.

After hanging up, he switched to another phone and continued to make false police reports.
