Chapter 43 The Legendary Car Thief
"What do you mean? You want to develop a long-term relationship with me?"
Li Wei looked on incredulously.
Upon hearing this, Veronica rolled her eyes: "I just asked you to do me a favor, what? So stingy? We were just playing cards together, weren't we?"
Hearing this, Li Wei breathed a sigh of relief, at least he wasn't being blamed.
He only considered Veronica a card-playing buddy.
Composing himself, Li Wei took the bag Veronica handed him.
The syringes inside the bag were unremarkable, and the small vials were labeled morphine.
"To be honest, even if I help you get through this period, what about afterwards? Have you thought it through?"
As he spoke, Li Wei shook his head: "I suggest you go to a drug rehabilitation center."
"Impossible. The moment I enter rehab, the FBI will fire me. All the humiliation I've endured and all the effort I've put in over the years will have been for nothing."
Hearing this, Li Wei knew he couldn't persuade her otherwise.
"Alright then, I'll help you for this period of time. As for what happens after that, you'll have to rely on yourself."
Hearing this, Veronica's lips curled up slightly, and she hugged Levi tightly, kissing him on the cheek: "Thanks."
...
At a scrap metal recycling plant near the pier in Long Beach, a Toyota Camry slowly pulls up to a stop on the side of the road.
The car window rolled down, revealing Li Wei's handsome profile.
Steve, who was leaning against the wall not far away, cursed under his breath but still obediently walked over.
"Get in the car."
Li Wei tilted his head to the side.
Steve looked around, then reluctantly opened the back door and got into the car.
"Put on the new invisible headset."
Veronica turned around in the passenger seat and handed her a new headset.
Li Wei then started the car and drove away from the vicinity.
After parking the car, Steve had already put on a new headset.
"Listen, Jimmy, tonight I need you to keep an eye on Calitley. Not a moment's separation. Understand?"
Upon hearing this, Steve's legs trembled and he shook uncontrollably, clearly terrified of Calitley: "Let's not talk about that now, there's new information."
He took a deep breath.
"What news?" Veronica frowned as she looked at Steve.
"Randall Memphis Rains".
"What? Memphis, Chip Rains' brother?"
Upon hearing the name, Veronica looked at Steve in disbelief.
"Callitelli sent Atreus to Memphis. Those fifty cars are involved in an important deal. Callitelli must get all the cars loaded into containers and shipped out to sea by the morning of four days later."
"Is this his reason for bringing back the legendary car thief Memphis? To threaten him with his brother's life?"
Veronica's heart sank when she heard this.
"Who is this Memphis?"
Li Wei listened from the side, somewhat confused.
"Six years ago, there was a legendary car thief in Los Angeles. It was said that there was no car he couldn't steal in 60 seconds. This guy happened to be Chip Rains' brother."
Veronica offered an explanation.
"So, the probability of Chip dying tonight has greatly decreased?"
Li Wei stroked his chin. No older brother would stand by and watch his younger brother be killed like this. There was a very high chance that Memphis would agree to help Calitelli get fifty cars.
"What about tonight's operation?" Li Wei was a little unsure. If they were destined not to gather any evidence, then the wiretapping would be pointless.
"Proceed according to the original plan, gather enough information, and arrest Calitley within four days. Fifty stolen cars—as long as they enter Calitley's territory, we have grounds to apply for a search warrant."
Veronica was adamant; for her, this case could not afford to fail.
Seeing that the other party was so determined, Li Wei said nothing more.
...
At night, a van parked near the recycling plant.
Levi and Veronica sat side by side.
The voices coming from Calitley's office came through the headset.
"Raymond Calitley, this is Memphis Raines," Attri introduced the two.
Steve stood behind, saying nothing.
But he was incredibly nervous.
"I tried to understand and learn how you Americans behave. But baseball... it's really boring."
Calitley, watching the baseball game on TV, muttered a complaint to Memphis.
"Where is my brother?"
Memphis didn't care about prejudice against Americans or arrogance among the British; all he wanted was his younger brother.
Upon hearing this, Calitley picked up the remote and turned off the TV.
He turned to Memphis: "Memphis Rains, I've heard so much about you. Attry said you were a leader in the industry. After you left, vehicle thefts in the South Bay dropped by 47%."
Memphis seemed not to hear Calitley's compliment: "Where is my brother?"
Calitley stared at Memphis for a moment, then suddenly stood up.
We arrived at the woodworking workshop next door.
"I admire these: chairs from the era of handcrafted art. A mahogany table with cloud patterns. A black walnut dining table. Metal is cold and ugly. Wood is warm, clean, and comes from nature."
"Watching furniture making is like watching a child grow up."
As Kallitelli led the group through his woodworking workshop, he launched into a lengthy explanation.
Memphis's patience was completely worn off: "You still haven't answered my question!"
As soon as they finished speaking, the group arrived at the office on the inside of the carpentry workshop.
Calitley sat down, but still did not answer Memphis's question: "We were forced to leave England and France, but we have come here, to this land of prosperity. It's just a little perplexing that you despise everything."
As he spoke, he took out a list from his drawer: "This list has fifty vehicles on it. I need them delivered to Pier 14 in Long Beach by 8:00 AM four days from now."
"This order is worth 200,000!"
After saying that, Calitley looked at Memphis expectantly.
Inside the bread truck where they were listening, Levi and Veronica exchanged a glance.
Once the stolen goods arrive, the perpetrators will be caught red-handed.
We are one step closer to capturing Kaliteli.
"No interest, I'm here to see my brother."
Memphis had retired from car theft six years ago and had absolutely no interest in it anymore.
He now understands that being a criminal only leads to a dead end; one will either die in the streets or spend the rest of their life in prison.
Upon hearing this, Calitley was a little angry: "Your brother came to me. He has a good reputation on the street; he's the famous Memphis's brother. I hired him two weeks ago and paid a deposit of ten thousand."
"Aitley told me that if it's about the deposit, I can understand. It's only right to pay back debts. Here's ten thousand."
As he spoke, Memphis pulled a wad of US dollars from his pocket, totaling ten thousand. He slowly placed the money on the table in front of Calitley and tapped it lightly with his finger.
"I wish it were that simple." Calitley sighed, his fingers interlaced as he looked at the US dollars Memphis had placed on the table.
