Chapter 312 A Rare Commodity: Bagman
Chapter 312 A Rare Commodity: Bagman
Louis knew that Mr. Bagman had actually placed a heavy bet on Harry's chances of winning the championship. Even though Catherine was far ahead of the other contestants, Mr. Bagman's gambling mentality still drove him to place a heavy bet on Harry.
Mr. Bagman's behavior was somewhat reminiscent of Lü Buwei's; he treated Harry like a rare commodity and raised him as a prodigy.
However, Harry was indeed a dark horse, a dark horse in every sense of the word. After all, he was the chosen one of the world, blessed with good fortune, and the whole world was named after him.
Hmm... this year's world should be called "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".
"It's alright," Harry replied casually. He realized he had been too nervous and was no longer nervous at all.
Mr. Bagman didn't say anything, but patted Harry's shoulder forcefully.
But Louis was mistaken. When it came to winning the championship, Mr. Bagman was actually betting on Catherine. As for why he was so enthusiastic with Harry... perhaps it was because they admired each other?
They entered the Quidditch pitch, which was completely unrecognizable. A twenty-foot-high hedge surrounded the edge of the field. Before them was a gap—the entrance to this vast maze. The passageways inside were dark and somewhat frightening.
Hedge Maze (Brand New).
Five minutes later, people began to enter the stands. Thousands of students filed into their seats, the air filled with excited chatter and hurried footsteps. The sky was now a clear, deep blue, and twinkling stars began to appear.
The students' conversations revolved around who would score a certain number of points or who would get a certain number of points. Before the competition began, they had no idea what the players would face.
"It's definitely a race to see who gets out of the maze first!" Seamus Finigan exclaimed, adding, "Thank goodness Louis wasn't in the race, otherwise he definitely wouldn't have made it out. I know he has no sense of direction."
"Aren't you afraid Louis will retaliate against you for saying that?" Neville asked worriedly from the side.
Simo paused for a moment, then reached out to shade his eyes and looked into the distance, searching for Louis's figure. He then spotted Louis in the distance where the warriors and their families were.
"Oh, Louis can't hear me, he's over there." Simon was relieved, and his smiling face returned.
Immediately afterwards, he heard a familiar voice beside him.
"It's a good thing Louis didn't participate in the competition, otherwise he definitely wouldn't have been able to find his way out. I know he has no sense of direction."
He turned around abruptly and saw Draco smiling at him, holding a strange little square object that was repeating his words over and over.
Simo looked ashen-faced and plopped down in his seat.
"Are you still so sure about it?" Draco asked smugly.
Simo quickly shook his head. Louis was too vengeful; he was really afraid of being subjected to devilish training.
"This is just a little lesson for you," Draco snorted, shaking his head as he said, "Next time you're talking badly about someone, you'd better watch out for anyone around you."
Seamus wanted to argue, but then thought better of it. If he angered Draco, Draco might actually do something like handing the recording over to Louis.
"I'll delete the recording. This was just a lesson for you guys," Draco said, deleting the recording. "I don't want to be surrounded by reckless people in the future. Be more careful, Seamus."
"Thank you, Malfoy." Seamus patted his chest with lingering fear. Since Draco said to delete it, he certainly wouldn't keep it. Pure-blood families still value what they say.
"It's all thanks to this harmonious society that you were saved." Draco rolled his eyes and sat down to start fiddling with his Walkman.
The Gryffindor students were also whispering among themselves, wondering why Draco had let Seamus off so easily today.
In the distance, Hagrid, Professor Emma, Professor McGonagall, and Professor Flitwick entered the sports field and approached Bagman and several warriors. Their hats were adorned with large, gleaming red stars, except for Hagrid—his red star looked so out of place on the back of his thick velvet vest.
"We will be patrolling outside the maze," Professor McGonagall told the warriors. "If you encounter any difficulties and need rescue, fire a red spark into the sky, and someone will come to your aid. Understand?"
The warriors nodded in unison.
"Okay, you can go now!" Bagman said cheerfully to the four patrolmen.
"Good luck, Harry," Hagrid whispered, and Aunt Molly also whispered her blessing to Harry. Bill gave him a hug to encourage him.
Louis stroked Catherine's hair and kissed her forehead. Catherine, caught up in the atmosphere, also pumped her fist in support.
The seven people walked in different directions and spread out around the maze. At this moment, Bagman pointed his wand to his throat and said "loud voice," and his magically amplified voice echoed in the stands.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the final match of the Triwizard Tournament is about to begin! Let me announce the current scores! Miss Catherine Worley, 100 points! Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"
After the silence subsided, the applause and cheers startled the birds of the Forbidden Forest into the darkening night sky. Once the noise died down, Mr. Bagman continued announcing, "Mr. Harry Potter, 90 points, second place, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"
Another round of enthusiastic applause followed, and then he continued, "Mr. Cedric Diggory—87 points, third place, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"
"Looks like Hogwarts has taken the top three spots. What a talent pool!" Mr. Bagman murmured, then called out, "Marilyn Chabanore—84 points, fourth place, Beauxbatons School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!"
"Vasily Petrenko! 82 points! Fifth place! Durmstrang School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!" Mr. Bagman continued to shout.
After the words were spoken, Vasily waved his hands and smiled enthusiastically, while his family members cheered him on warmly.
"Viktor Krum! 81 points! Sixth place! Durmstrang School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!" Mr. Bagman's voice was extremely loud and clear, truly befitting a top commentator—except for the humor and wit of the Ron and Lee Jordan brothers.
Viktor's expression was somewhat gloomy, but he still waved to the cheering crowd, though his attitude seemed a bit perfunctory. But then again, being at the center of the world stage all this time, suddenly being second to last is indeed a bit hard to accept.
"Fleur de la Cour! Seventh place! Beauxbatons College!" Mr. Bagman, being considerate of Fleur's feelings, did not call out her score.
High EQ! It seems all those years of commentary haven't been in vain.
"The third event is also very simple," Mr. Bagman continued. "It seems everyone is quite curious about what this event is, so I'll explain it—oh, of course I'll explain it to you, after all, our warriors need to know what this event is, otherwise how can we have a competition?"
He told a corny joke that was neither too funny nor too bad, which caused a burst of laughter.
"Alright, the main objective of this project is to find the Goblet of Fire within this maze—this is where the Goblet of Fire's usefulness becomes apparent. The warrior who finds the Goblet of Fire and brings it back will be the victor—you understand correctly, yes, this is a battle, a battle between warriors. Warriors can use any means necessary to seize the Goblet of Fire!"
A hush fell over the arena, then erupted into a deafening roar. They had guessed the ending correctly, but not the process—but that was entertaining enough, wasn't it? A battle, just thinking about it was thrilling.
"Of course, we also need to thank His Highness Louis Mountbatten for his generous support. He provided the latest magical technology, which allows us to clearly see the first-person perspective of each contestant!" Mr. Ludo Bagman shouted. "We also need our contestants to cooperate and stick this little tentacle on their foreheads."
This is the technology of the Mantis, combining modern technology and magic from this world. It's like a mobile camera, but it doesn't need power; instead, it uses Kappa amber, tiny bits of Kappa amber.
The all-powerful Kepa Amber not only raised the Mantid, but now it can also conduct research on technology—thanks to the tech-savvy swarm guardian Hisek, whose ability, compound eye vision, was copied onto this tiny tentacle.
Following Bagman's instructions, the warriors pressed the tentacle with the cute little compound eye onto their heads. Immediately, the tentacle seemed to come alive, standing up abruptly, and the compound eye began to rotate, sharing the images of each of the contestants.
Immediately, a huge virtual screen appeared directly above the field, with multiple angles, each screen displaying the perspectives of several players.
"Now we can all see the compound eye's field of vision!" Mr. Bagman exclaimed excitedly. "Technology is developing, wizards are progressing, and I think this can be applied to Quidditch matches, so that everyone can clearly see each player's perspective."
"Actually, it can also transmit signals, so you can watch our Quidditch matches even at home," Louis said casually beside him, his voice carrying loudly enough for everyone to hear thanks to Mr. Bagman's booming voice. "This is the latest magical technology developed by the Hogwarts Research Lab. It can use swarm sound waves to transmit match signals and convert them into sound and images. Of course, this new magical technology isn't expensive. You only need three Galleons to buy the equipment, and you only need to pay a Galleon service fee each month to enjoy technology like a Muggle television."
The buzzing from the crowd grew louder as everyone discussed the new thing in a noisy manner.
People love novelty, especially things that are closely related to their lives. No one will refuse something that makes life more convenient, not even those conservative wizards—after all, as Louis said, there is a little bit of magic involved.
As for the exact amount of magic involved, that's a matter of opinion.
But there is still a little bit, isn't there? At least they didn't claim that this pork cube contained beef.
First came 2009, then came heaven. What's the rest of the saying?
Getting back to the point, Mr. Bagman glanced at Louis and said with a smile, "We'll give everyone a little GG right here. If you need it, you can order it from the house-elves at Hogwarts, or you can order it on Ele.me. We welcome everyone to come and make your purchases anytime."
The adult wizards were already eager to try it out, not to mention the students, who all decided that after the competition, they would send letters home by owl, describing in detail and with embellishment the benefits of this new product.
Louis's products are always top-notch, a fact that has already been imprinted in the hearts of wizards throughout the wizarding world.
"Alright, dear students and audience members," Mr. Bagman interrupted their whispering, "I think we should now focus our attention on the game. Our warriors are eager to begin."
"Now, please return to your seats, family members," Mr. Bagman said, gesturing for everyone to proceed.
The family members left the warriors' side one by one, and Louis pulled Solanlian back to her seat. To her left sat Emma and a group of Hogwarts professors. When they saw Solanlian coming over, they immediately pulled her over.
"What did you do this morning? I've been waiting for you." Solanlian nudged Emma with her arm, sounding a little resentful.
Emma smiled and said, "Ziyan and I went to my house last night; there were some things we needed to take care of there."
Emma then looked at Louis and said, "You little rascal, your grandpa wants you to go home for summer vacation. He misses you a lot."
"Really?" Louis's expression was full of disbelief. "I believe my grandfather would think of me, but I absolutely don't believe he would admit to it..."
"You ungrateful brat, your grandpa has spoiled you for nothing." Emma sighed. "That's just how old people are, like little kids. Are you really going to argue with him?"
"I'm a kid too," Louis chuckled.
"A kid as tall as you?" Solanlian rolled her eyes at him. "Look at the field, the match looks like it's about to start."
"Now, our warriors, please stand at attention!" Mr. Bagman shouted. "The competition is about to begin—"
"Now... all players, get ready, listen to my whistle!" Bagman shouted, raising his right hand.
With a short whistle, the contestants rushed into the maze.
The tall hedges cast dark shadows on the path. Whether it was because the hedges were tall and dense or because of some kind of magic, the audience could no longer hear anything once they entered the maze. It was as if the outside world had been completely isolated by magic.
Strangely enough, the seven contestants could no longer see each other the moment they entered the maze, but the onlookers knew that they had each arrived at a different starting point under the influence of some kind of magic.
