Chapter 21 The Mantis Stalks the Cicada, Unaware of the Oriole Behind

Midnight is the busiest time in the tavern. At this moment, three people are sipping their drinks at a corner table, waiting for the right opportunity.

"Has it already started?" The hooded man's hidden eyes were fixed on the staircase leading to the second floor.

He saw Levitt go upstairs. The skinny guy also saw someone go in from the second floor. That must be the student girl from the commission!

"If you ask me, let's just forget about it. That guy's a mage, why bother messing with him?" the skinny guy said reluctantly.

"Yeah, your face is frozen stiff by the freezing ray, you still can't smile." The fat man chimed in.

"Even if he's a sorcerer, he's still human! Right now, he's probably naked and defenseless with that schoolgirl. We'll just kick the door down, cover his mouth, and he won't be able to cast spells!" The hooded man quickly described his plan, which seemed to make perfect sense.

He stood up, and the fat man and the thin man exchanged a glance. At this point, there was no use backing down. If they wanted to prove their innocence, they would be nothing but mud on their pants. Besides, they really couldn't do without this guy.

After squeezing through the crowd on the first floor of the tavern, going up to the second floor, and then passing through a corridor that was occasionally stained with wine and vomit, you arrive at the accommodation area.

The noise gradually subsided, and the faint snoring from one of the rooms completely blocked out the sounds from the first floor.

Almost every tavern in the town of Zendar is very well soundproofed, thanks to the expensive building materials.

They used to stay at this tavern, but after Levitt gave them a freezing ray last time, the hooded man moved out to "avoid alerting the enemy."

Upon entering the accommodation area, at a fork in the road, the skinny man led the two to room 302.

Upon reaching the door, the three of them pressed their ears against it to listen.

Why is there no movement?

"It's over so quickly?"

While the three were talking, they had already prepared their weapons. The hooded man realized that the door was locked, so he stepped back and let the skinny man pick the lock, while he and the fat man kept watch.

Two minutes passed without incident, and then the door lock clicked.

"Please, go ahead." The skinny man stepped back, gesturing for the hooded man to open the door.

Without further ado, someone came out of a room and looked at them strangely.

The three quickly hid their weapons, and once the man disappeared, the hooded man immediately opened the door a crack.

He picked up a lit candle in the hallway, its light seeping through the crack in the door and illuminating the floor, and gripped the dagger tightly in his hand.

As the door opened wider, he gradually saw what was inside the room.

The room was very clean, with no clutter or trash on the table, old clothes hanging on the coat rack by the door, and a pair of worn-out shoes in the entryway.

Didn't Levitt make an appointment?

No candles were lit, so no business was done. Just assume you're exhausted and going to sleep. Where did you throw all those clothes on the floor?

Is this guy the kind of ruthless character who would pack his clothes into a pile even in an emergency?

Even after the hooded man pushed the door open completely, the expected scene was nowhere to be found; there wasn't even a single person in the room.

"This is the rendezvous point. We'll take care of things elsewhere!" The skinny man muttered as he watched the hooded man walk in, but his expression was somewhat relieved.

He genuinely didn't want to go against the magician.

That's why they say beautiful women are a source of trouble.

If it weren't for this idiot constantly talking about crescent moons, they would have been busy making money long ago.

"Shh—" The hooded man gestured for silence behind him and cautiously entered the house.

The skinny man and the fat man, who were also carrying weapons, couldn't stay in the corridor, so they followed them inside.

"Creak—" The shoes gently pressed against the wooden board. The three of them deliberately slowed their breathing, and all their eyes were focused on the dark bed.

The closer they got, the more they suspected there was no one in bed.

Suddenly, the hooded man sensed someone at the window and immediately shouted, "Who's there!" He threw the dagger in that direction.

The dagger spun and flew through the air, reflecting the candlelight, and the hooded man could see, by the light, that someone was hiding behind the curtains on the windowsill.

Although nothing had happened yet, he and the other two all thought to themselves, "It's over."

This is a trap!

Two bulges appeared in the curtains, revealing hands extended from inside. A woman's voice followed: "Thunder, spread!"

In an instant,

The curtains were lifted, a dagger flew backward, the candlelight went out, and an irresistible impact slammed in like an elephant, sending all the surrounding debris flying into the air, accompanied by wisps of electricity.

"Bang!"

The three were blasted off their feet by the spell, and the skinny man was even blasted against the wall like the other debris.

"Ah! He's gone! He's gone!" The hooded man, his body tingling with numbness, saw a shadow leave through the broken window of the tavern. He shouted as he got up from the ground and gave chase.

"Should we still chase them?!" The fat man grimaced in pain as he saw sparks flashing across his body.

"The tavern people are coming soon, things could get complicated!" the skinny man grinned, following the hooded man who had already climbed out the window.

"I hate mages." The fat man heard the noise in the corridor, staggered to his feet, and went to the window.

Outside, his two companions were already eagerly preparing to jump from the second-floor windowsill.

The hooded man was eager to chase the voice under the moon, so he gritted his teeth and jumped down, while the skinny man was a bit timid and hesitated.

"Give me a hand." The fat man reached out to the thin man, who turned around and grabbed his arm, but the fat man's buttocks were firmly stuck to the window.

"Who goes there?" A voice called from behind. The fat man's face turned panicked, and the skinny man increased his strength, but no matter how he dragged, it was no use.

"Just say you're a thief. If you're going to kidnap someone and end up in jail, we'll come and rescue you!" the skinny man said, then ignored the fat man.

"Don't leave me behind!" The fat man watched the skinny man jump down, squat on the ground for several seconds to recover before leaving, his words full of grievance at being abandoned.

Immediately afterwards, the people behind him pulled him back into the house.

There were five people in total. He couldn't see the faces of four of them clearly, but he remembered the young man who was holding the candle.

"Ah! Master Law! That wasn't you just now!" The fat man trembled with fear when he saw Levitt's expressionless face.

It's a trap!

Was that commission actually a trap?

The goal was to lure the three of them into a trap!

But what about that monk from earlier?

"Levitt, who exactly did you mess with?" Bearskin asked the fat man, puzzled.

"Just some minor troubles." Levitt shrugged, he was in a bad mood.

He originally intended to use that commission to lure the three hooded brothers and the old sign Silver Tree together, let them fight amongst themselves first, and then he and Bearskin would wait for the commotion before sneaking in to ambush them.

Who would have thought that only one would survive?

It seems this Silver Tree is indeed a sorcerer; even the windows, which were specially reinforced and locked, were blown away. However, it's unlikely that the windows could trap them.

What, you want to fight back a few times?

Levitt sighed helplessly, stepped forward, and slapped the fat man several times: "Who exactly are you people! Speak!"
