Starting with the goblin extermination

Chapter 59 Striving for Excellence

Early morning, in a small house in the West District.

Logan sat in his chair, flipping through the pages of "The Complete Guide to Combat Techniques," his fingers occasionally sliding across the paper, while the dining table in front of him creaked.

A new day begins.

Elsa was changing Lily into a brand new long dress. Lily's face was flushed, and she wasn't looking at Logan.

Lily's gaze darted back and forth between the two, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

They were preparing to go to the temple of the Goddess of Order in the center of town.

As one of the few true gods on the continent of Babylon who truly protect the weak, the priests of the Goddess of Order provide basic literacy education and doctrinal guidance to commoner children of school age.

During the time when her parents were gone and Elsa was not around, young Lily earned a meager living by washing clothes in the river, and she was also saved from starvation thanks to the bread given to her by the temple.

Lily has always had a small wish: to become one of those priests in the temple who wear white robes and help others.

However, in this world, even kindness needs money to support it. Helping orphans is already a great act of kindness, but to become a priest requires paying a considerable sum of money.

This was impossible for Lily, who had struggled to survive in the past.

But things are different now.

After Elsa returned, she could no longer allow her only sister to wash clothes in the river.

"Big Brother Logan, let's go!" Lily waved her little hand excitedly.

"Be careful on the road."

Logan walked out the door and watched the two figures, one big and one small, disappear into the alleyway.

The Temple of the Goddess of Order...

Come to think of it, when I first arrived in Riverwood, I was rescued by a passing Holy Knight of Order.

I never imagined that Lily might become a priestess there.

When I have some free time, I should go to the temple myself, even if it's just to see Lily.

Let's buy a new table first.

......

In the afternoon, at the training ground behind the Adventurers' Guild.

The scorching sun baked the muddy ground until it was burning hot, and the air was filled with the smell of flying dust.

After a simple lunch, Logan arrived on time. The two men who had arrived earlier were already at the training ground.

Judging from their expensive clothes, Logan was pretty sure they were children of nobles.

Upon seeing Logan, the blond northerner, walk in, the young nobleman merely frowned in disgust, then turned his head to the side and began complaining to his female companion.

Logan didn't seem to care, and just quietly moved his joints.

Shortly after, Instructor Soben walked in carrying a heavy wooden stick.

He nodded slightly when he saw Logan, and then began today's lesson in a crisp and efficient manner.

It's still a hands-on lesson with no fluff.

"start."

Soben closed in on the young master and lady in an instant, like a cheetah.

boom!boom!

The wooden sticks slammed mercilessly into their blunt swords.

Compared to their disheveled state on the first day, the two of them finally looked somewhat more presentable, managing to barely withstand Soben's initial attack. It seems that the ten gold coins they paid for the lesson did indeed teach them something.

But these resistances were meaningless in the face of Soben.

The wooden stick's trajectory shifted strangely, grazing the sword's spine before striking the nobleman's thigh and the woman's shoulder squarely.

The two screamed and rolled on the muddy ground, unable to get up for a long time due to the pain.

"Too slow to generate power from the waist," Soben commented coldly, then turned around and fixed his gaze on Logan.

"Come."

Logan took a deep breath and stared intently at Soben's arm holding the stick.

call--!

The wooden stick, accompanied by a sharp whistling sound, slammed down fiercely towards Logan's left neck.

On the first day, Logan would have been knocked down by a single blow because he couldn't keep up. But after mastering the [Parry] combat technique, this originally lightning-fast strike now had a clear trajectory in Logan's eyes.

Logan did not retreat, but instead took a small half-step forward.

[Parry]

The blunt sword met the attack at a precise angle, avoiding a direct confrontation, and instead, at the moment of contact, the wrist flicked sharply.

Snapped!

The wooden stick struck the blade, but the violent force was smoothly diverted along the tilted spine of the sword, eventually slamming heavily onto the open ground beside Logan.

Dirt splashed everywhere.

Logan's body swayed only slightly, remaining as steady as a rock.

Soben maintained his chopping posture, his eyebrows raised.

This was absolutely the first time Logan had ever seen such a surprised expression on this cold-faced instructor's face.

"interesting."

Soben tilted his neck, making a cracking sound.

He withdrew the wooden stick, and his demeanor suddenly changed.

"Again!"

This time, the speed and power of the wooden stick were increased dramatically!

Bang! Bang! Smack! Smack!

A dull thud echoed across the training field.

Soben showed no mercy, unleashing a barrage of continuous, alternating attacks.

Logan gritted his teeth, his arm muscles instantly engorged with blood. He frantically unleashed his [Parry] combat technique; with each clash of sword and staff, immense force surged through his tiger's mouth, and his bones creaked throughout his body.

He managed to deflect the first five blows, but by the sixth blow, his strength and skill had finally reached their limit.

boom!

A heavy sweeping blow broke through the defense and slammed into Logan's ribs.

Logan grunted and stumbled back five or six steps. He was panting heavily, sweat pouring into his eyes like a waterfall.

Soben stopped what he was doing.

He looked at Logan, paused for two seconds, and then a satisfied look appeared on his poker face.

"Good. You've learned it." He remained as concise as ever.

However, those six words struck the noble couple, who had just crawled out of the mud, like a thunderbolt.

The young nobleman's face flushed red instantly, a surge of anger at being humiliated welling up inside him.

Why should I?!

He spent so much of his family's money, hiring professional swordsmen to teach him from a young age, training diligently every day, enduring so many beatings, and only barely learned the basic stances. And this blond northern barbarian actually learned it in just one lesson?!

"This isn't fair!"

The young nobleman could no longer contain himself. He pointed at Logan and glared angrily at Soben: "Why can he learn it in one go?! Soben, are you two in cahoots?! You must have been giving him free private lessons!"

No one can learn combat skills in one lesson unless they are a genius.

This Yankee who fled here?! A genius? He doesn't deserve the title!

The woman beside him was equally taken aback, but she did not lose her composure as hysterically as her male companion.

Soben's face instantly darkened.

He turned his head and stared at the young man as if he were looking at a pile of garbage.

"I don't need to explain to you."

The wooden stick was slammed heavily onto the ground.

"roll."

The young nobleman was so frightened by Soben's imposing manner that he took a step back, his face turning pale and then red.

"You...you dare talk to me like that!" He gritted his teeth, his bravado masking his fear. "Fine! I'm leaving! I'm going to report you to the guild! I want a different teacher! You piece of trash, just wait to be expelled from the guild!"

With that, he turned around angrily and prepared to leave with his female companion.

Just then, Soben's voice sounded softly behind him.

"Go ahead. But in the entire Riverwood branch, I'm the only one qualified to teach Parry."

The young nobleman abruptly stopped, his face contorted in disgust, as if he had swallowed a fly. But he was too ashamed to stay any longer, so he could only snort coldly and flee the training ground.

The female student bowed respectfully and left without even glancing at Logan.

This funny little incident has ended, but the teaching continues.

This is actually a good thing for Logan; now it's one-on-one tutoring.

boom!

"Stand firmly on your left foot."

boom!boom!

"Too slow to act."

boom! boom! boom!

"get out of class dismissed."

Logan was knocked to the ground with a blow, his whole body aching.

He simply stopped getting up, rolled over, and lay on the muddy ground without any regard for his image.

The semi-transparent text flashed in his eyes.
