The Bizarre Adventure of the Warhammer Guard
Chapter 41 First Clash
Night had already fallen on area 0658, which was originally an outpost of a federal colonial base, containing a command center fortress and other military buildings.
Later, after several years of development, this outpost was abandoned, and the army was relocated to another location, which is now the Deadwater Base. The gradually increasing number of colonists settled near the fortress, usually maintaining a size of a thousand.
A transport vehicle had arrived at the entrance to area 0658. The surroundings were silent, and there wasn't a single light in the entire settlement, making it seem like no one lived there.
"We've arrived." Renault opened the driver's side door and got out.
Instead of turning on the lights on his armor, he activated the night vision device built into his helmet, which he had temporarily assembled from the armory inside the Deadwater Base before setting off.
“Something’s not right here,” Reno said. “It’s too quiet. There’s no noise from the machines or any other people talking.”
"No need to worry," Loken's voice came from behind Reno. "The aliens have already breached this entrance; you can see scratches and signs of corrosion on the outer defensive structures."
Clad in black armor, Loken seemed to blend into the darkness, only his crimson goggles visible; his Astartes-like physique granted him night vision. Battlefield information was constantly being gathered and scrolling before Loken's eyes, enabling him to make these judgments.
"Seven o'clock." Chris checked the oracle and looked at the largest building in the camp. "Biosignals are coming from there. The vibration sensors show that's the biggest source of vibration in this area."
Chris once again demonstrated his excellent intelligence analysis skills. This was his first real combat mission as an Astartes, so he was eager to participate. He knew he could never truly understand his abilities solely in the training field.
"That's the command center," Renault explained. "It looks like the civilians are in grave danger."
"Let's double-check the mission," Loken said to the others. "Rescue the civilians, find the experimental devices. The aliens aren't our top priority."
After reiterating the mission objectives, the group headed towards the command center. Loken led the way, carrying a heavy bomb gun; Leon and Chris flanked the group on either side, each carrying a standard bomb gun; Ada was in the middle, holding a specially made bomb gun.
Renault, a local, was at the back of the group. He had wanted to lead the way, but seeing that these soldiers were at least thirty centimeters taller than him, he decided against jogging ahead and instead stayed at the rear.
The tail wing of the team is also very important, Renault thought to himself.
Along the way, dilapidated buildings were everywhere, bullet casings were scattered all over the place, and blackened blood was splattered on both sides of the road, but no human or Zerg corpses were seen. After a while, the team arrived at the entrance of the command center.
Loken stopped, raised his left hand, and made a stop gesture.
"What the hell is that?" Renault pointed to the thing that had appeared on the ground ahead. "The ground there looks alive."
What appeared before everyone was a large expanse of purple, viscous substance extending from the command center. Within it, one could see dense, crisscrossing tubular structures, resembling human blood vessels.
These tubular structures also have a slight wriggling motion, and from a distance they look like a purple carpet.
The steel gate to the command center had been breached from the outside in, revealing a huge hole with numerous scratch marks around it. If you listened carefully, you could still hear gunfire and the hissing of insects emanating from deep within the command center.
“Note,” Loken said, “that purple substance should be the fungal carpet, the active substance secreted by these aliens, an extension of their sense of touch. I have encountered this kind of insectoid alien many times.”
"What are their weaknesses?" Chris asked.
“There are no obvious weaknesses,” Loken said, stepping forward onto the creep. “Attack their heads directly until they are completely immobilized, or burn them to death with a flamethrower.”
As they talked, the group entered the command center and arrived at the command center hall. In the darkness, pairs of green eyes appeared.
"It's a springtail," Renault shouted.
"Prepare for firefight." Loken raised his weapon. "Free fire."
As soon as he finished speaking, four bomb guns and one electromagnetic rifle opened fire simultaneously. Each bomb accurately pierced through a jumping insect, knocking them over one by one.
The bomb gun has a very high firepower, which is more than enough to deal with these weakly defended aliens. If the zombies are lined up in the same line of fire, a single bomb can penetrate at least four of them.
The zebras began their charge, fearlessly rushing towards the five men, but the explosive bullets were like a wall, and not a single zebra could break through the defenses.
The muzzle flashes of the bomb guns brought a burst of light with each shot, briefly illuminating the imposing helmets of the group.
"Advance!" Loken commanded.
Upon hearing Loken's command, Leon and Chris holstered their explosive pistols and drew their chainsaw swords, pressing the activation switch. In an instant, the roar of the chainsaws echoed throughout the hall. The next moment, the three charged towards the swarm of insects.
"For the Emperor!"
Loken charged forward quickly, his left shoulder armor knocking away a Zergling that lunged at him. His right hand swung the chain saw horizontally, slicing three Zerglings in front of him in two. Then, with a sidestep, he grabbed a Zergling attacking from the side with his left hand, crushed its head, and threw it at the Zerglings behind him. The massive impact knocked down a swarm of Zerglings.
Like Loken, Leon and Chris punched the leaping bug away and cleaved it in two with their swords. The three Shadowmoon Wolves worked together, relentlessly slaying these hideous aliens.
Some stragglers occasionally manage to pounce on the Space Marines, but these minor impacts do not shake them in the slightest.
When the forelimbs, bony claws, and sharp teeth of these jumping insects attacked their powered armor, they left no scratches. Instead, the armor was so hard that the insects were shaken back.
Ada continued firing her bomb gun, taking bursts of bullets at any leaping bugs that tried to ambush her. During a reload, Ada suddenly looked up, placed her left hand on the hilt of the black greatsword she carried behind her back, then drew the greatsword and swung it down forcefully.
A leaping insect that attacked from the ceiling was sliced in two by Ada, its corpse falling beside her. She sheathed her greatsword, reloaded, and continued aiming and firing at the enemy.
"No way, friends," Renault muttered, stopping firing. "Using melee?"
Renault stared blankly at the brutal scene, realizing that unless he was attacked at close range, he would definitely pull the trigger until he ran out of ammunition.
These allies of unknown origin do have a somewhat unusual fighting style, but they do possess close-combat capabilities.
Their movements were lightning fast, and the way they swung their weapons was so fast that Reno couldn't even see them clearly. Basically, no Zergling could withstand a single attack from them.
"Alright, whatever makes you happy," Reno readjusted his shooting stance. "I still prefer my gun."
After saying that, Renault continued firing.
