Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 218 Aya Arrives
Seeing Wayne's strange look.
Wilford said nothing and left in a hurry.
Wayne went over Wilford's words, "Actually, it wouldn't be bad if the two of them were together," in his mind several times.
Twin sisters?
wrong.
They are mother and daughter flowers.
He seemed to have only seen this plot in some excellent anime works in his previous life.
wrong.
Why would a priest like him think about these things?
What can he possibly do?
He can't do anything, can he?
Wayne picked up his teacup and took another sip.
He simply couldn't understand it.
No.
Is Wilford sick?
If a normal person found out that their wife and daughter frequently visited a man, wouldn't their first reaction be anger? Shouldn't it be suspicion? Shouldn't they be ready to confront him with a knife? How come in Wilford's case, it became "it's not impossible"?
Is this something a normal person would say?
Wayne took a deep breath and swallowed his anger.
Forget it.
Wilford's mind wasn't quite right to begin with.
Wayne should have realized this from the moment he was "served" by the walkers in the graveyard. A normal person wouldn't do that kind of thing in a place, and then continue being mayor as if nothing happened after having their toes sucked.
The afternoon sun shone down from above, landing on his eyelids, warm and comforting. The jumbled thoughts in his mind slowly dissolved in the sunlight, turning into a blurry halo.
Forget it.
forget about it.
He's off today.
Besides the church.
Wilford ran all the way.
He didn't stop until he had run a long way.
He didn't know why he was panicking. It was his own words, and he himself thought "it's not impossible," but after they came out of his mouth, he panicked.
It's not regret.
It's fear.
He was afraid Wayne would take it seriously.
He was more afraid that Wayne wasn't serious.
Actually, he didn't say anything wrong.
It even had a slightly deliberate element to it.
In the interior of the Kingdom of Wiggins, such things were not uncommon among the minor nobles. You give away your wife, I give away my daughter, he gives away his sister; they exchange gifts, taking turns. In the end, even they themselves didn't know who was who and what their relationship was.
Wayne is the son of a marquis, a prominent figure from the capital, and a capable man who saved the entire Frosttown from Saint Hilde. How many people like him can he meet in his lifetime? If Wayne wanted, what kind of woman wouldn't he have?
Besides, Frosttown is about to be moved to Bellino City. Bellino City is the capital of the Bellino Province. Who lives there? Nobles, wealthy merchants, and high-ranking church officials.
What is he, the mayor of a small border town, in a place like that? Nothing at all.
He needs a thread.
A thread that can transform him from "nothing" to "at least having some connection".
As it stands, the only possible connection is Wayne.
Wilford let out a long breath, straightened up from the tree trunk, straightened his collar, and straightened the crooked brooch.
He dusted off his robe and walked back along the main street.
It was afternoon.
The sunlight slanted in from the west.
Wayne was tidying up the bookshelves, putting away the theological texts that the believers had scattered.
The door was pushed open.
Old Ruth stood in the doorway, his back hunched, his hands gripping a cane, the tip of which he had worn smooth. Behind him stood a small figure.
It's Aya.
She was wearing a faded light blue top, and her hair was tied into two small braids that hung down on either side of her shoulders.
After recovering from her injuries, she chose to return to her village to take care of her grandfather. Unexpectedly, she has now returned to the church once again.
She was clutching a small cloth bag in her hand. The bag was not big and had several patches on it, with the straps tightly clenched in her hand.
Old Ruth came in.
"Your Excellency, Bishop." His voice was a little hoarse.
"This child, Aya... I would like to ask you to take her in."
Wayne's gaze shifted from old Root's face to Aya's.
Aya lowered her head; she seemed a little nervous.
Old Ruth placed the cloth bag on the table and untied the rope. A small pile of copper coins and a few silver coins poured out and scattered on the table, some of the copper coins already rusted green.
"Your Excellency, I know this isn't enough. But it's all I have. Please keep it for now, and I'll send you more when I've saved up enough."
Wayne didn't look at the money; he looked at old Ruth.
"Village Chief Lute, what's wrong...?"
Old Ruth waved his hand, interrupting him.
"Your Excellency, please listen to me."
"Aya's brother is gone, and she's all alone in the village with no one to take care of her. I'm an old man, and it's hard for me to even walk, let alone take care of a child."
“There are some people in the village who are willing to help, but they can’t even afford to eat their own food, how can they have the resources to help others? Besides…” Old Rut paused, his voice lowering, “Besides, Aya’s life is too hard. Her father is gone, her mother is gone, and her brother is gone. If she stays in the village, her life is over. She can only marry a farmer, have a bunch of kids, and toil in the fields for a living. Her life will be ruined.”
I want her to have a better future.
Old Ruth raised his head, his eyes glistening with tears.
"Your Excellency, I know this request is presumptuous. But after much thought, I have no other choice. You are the best person in this town, and the only one I can trust. I feel at ease with Aya with you."
Wayne's gaze fell on Aya for a couple of moments.
"Aya."
Aya's body trembled slightly as she raised her head.
Her eyes were red, but she wasn't crying.
Aya's lips moved slightly.
"I do."
Her voice wasn't loud, but it was very clear.
"I can't be a burden to Grandpa." She looked up at Wayne with her red eyes. "Grandpa is old and needs a cane to walk. He can't take care of me, and I don't want him to. I want to support myself."
She paused, then handed over the small cloth bag in her hand.
"Your Excellency, I have a little money here. Not much, but I can work. I can sweep, wipe tables, start a fire, and feed the chickens. I can do any kind of work. Please take me in; I won't eat the church's food for nothing."
Wayne looked at the cloth bag covered in patches.
"That money, was it the one I left for you before?"
Aya lowered her head, her voice muffled.
"Um."
"The money was used for my brother's funeral, and the rest... the rest was all left to me. I couldn't bear to spend it, so I kept saving it."
Wayne crouched down to be at eye level with her.
"Aya, listen to me."
Aya looked up at him with her red eyes.
"Keep one coin as a keepsake. The rest is for your grandfather."
Aya was stunned for a moment.
"For...for Grandpa?"
"Yes." Wayne's voice was soft, but every word was clear. "After you come with me, you won't lack money. Your grandfather lives alone in the village. He's old and has difficulty walking. He needs money for medical treatment and medicine. This money will be more useful to him than to you."
Old Ruth stood by, listening to everything. His eyes reddened, and he trembled with anxiety.
"Your Excellency, this...this won't do. I've already troubled you by bringing Aya here; how can I possibly accept your money again?"
Wayne stood up and turned to old Ruth.
"Village Chief Lute, do you want Aya to worry about you?"
"Grandpa, please listen to His Holiness the Bishop. You live alone in the village, and your legs aren't very strong. If you get sick, there won't even be anyone to bring you water. Keep the money and buy some food and medicine to take care of yourself."
Her voice began to tremble.
"I'll be fine at church. His Excellency the bishop is a good man; he won't bully me. I'll be obedient, I'll work, I'll eat well, and I'll sleep well. Don't worry about me."
Old Ruth shed tears.
He reached out and pulled Aya into his arms, his rough hands covering the back of her head, pressing her little head against his chest.
The grandfather and grandson broke down in tears.
