Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 251 Tick-Tock, Audrey
The team arrived in Odrian on the afternoon of the fourth day.
From afar, the outline of the city walls could be seen rising from the horizon. The greyish-white stone walls gleamed warmly in the afternoon sun, and several kingdom flags flew atop them.
The city wall wasn't high, but it was worlds apart from the stone fence of Frost Town.
Someone in the group let out a low gasp.
The children pressed their faces against the car windows, their eyes wide open.
"We're here!"
"Is that Audrian?"
"What a huge city wall..."
Vera sat in the corner of the carriage, glanced out through the gap in the curtain, opened her mouth, but couldn't say anything.
She had never seen such a big city.
Wayne sat in the carriage, his gaze passing through the window and landing in the direction of the city gate, where he saw a familiar figure.
An old man was standing at the city gate.
He was dressed in a well-fitting white robe, his eyes fixed on the approaching convoy in the distance, never looking away.
Charman.
Wayne's lips twitched slightly.
The old bishop of Audrien actually came to the city gate to wait for him.
The panel pops up in a timely manner.
[Charman - Current Status]
[Status: I've been standing here for almost an hour.]
[Note: The old man is eagerly anticipating seeing you again, his savior. These past few days he's been thinking endlessly that without you, he might still be lying in bed waiting to die.]
[Note 2: He put Elena in solitary confinement, afraid she would come and bother you again.]
[Note 3: He has something very important to tell you about the internal developments within the Vatican, as well as some information he has recently gathered.]
After looking at the panel, Wayne lifted the curtain of the carriage.
"Wait a minute."
The convoy stopped.
Wayne jumped off the carriage and walked towards the city gate.
When Charman saw him, the wrinkles on his face smoothed out, and he walked much faster than usual. His young assistant behind him quickly followed, afraid that he might fall.
"Wayne, my friend!"
Charman's voice was filled with barely concealed excitement.
"You've finally arrived!"
Wayne walked up to him, his gaze sweeping over the old bishop. He looked well, his complexion rosy, his posture straighter than before, and he appeared at least five years younger.
He smiled.
Yes, I'm here.
Charman looked Wayne up and down, his eyes slightly reddening. "Good, good, it's good that you're back."
People around looked over.
Someone recognized Wayne's face.
"Hey, isn't that Father Wayne?"
"Which Father Wayne?"
"Who else? The one from our old Audrey's Church! The really beautiful one!"
"Oh! He's back?"
"Wasn't it said he was transferred to Frosttown?"
"They're back! Look at that long convoy behind them, they're bringing people back!"
More and more people gathered around.
"Father Wayne!"
A bakery owner in an apron squeezed through the crowd, still clutching half a loaf of bread she hadn't put down yet. When she saw Wayne, her eyes lit up, and her voice rose two octaves:
"Father, you're finally back! We've all missed you so much while you were gone!"
A burst of laughter erupted around them.
Some people joined in the commotion.
"Absolutely! My wife has been going to church much less often since Father Wayne left!"
"That's nothing. My widow next door is always complaining about why Father Wayne hasn't come back yet; she's almost converted to Christianity!"
"Oh my god, he's still so handsome..."
"I knew it! You can't find a better-looking man in all of Audrien."
Wayne didn't respond to each of them, but simply nodded slightly in the direction of the crowd and smiled.
This smile made the girls blush.
Charman stood to the side, watching this scene, his smile deepening. He turned and waved to the crowd.
"Alright, alright, everyone disperse. Father Wayne has been traveling for several days, let him go into town and rest. We can talk about it tomorrow."
We still have to give the old bishop face.
Although the crowd was somewhat reluctant to leave, they gradually dispersed. However, quite a few people still stood at a distance, gazing in this direction as if looking at some rare object.
Charman turned around and looked at Wayne.
"Come on, my friend, let's go inside and talk."
Wayne turned and waved in the direction of the caravan. Thomason saw the signal, pulled the reins, and the carriage pulled out of the procession and followed behind him.
The rest of the migrating groups, guided by their guides, walked along the road outside the city wall toward the temporary camp, where a tent area had already been set up—simple but at least they could find a place to stay.
Wilford, still on horseback, watched the church carriages leave the procession, then glanced at the tent area in the distance, saying nothing more. He dismounted, walked to the front of the procession, and began directing the residents to set up camp.
The carriage turned onto the main street of Odrian and headed south.
The buildings lining the road were noticeably more upscale than those in Frost Town, with two- or three-story houses everywhere, their walls painted white and flowerpots adorning the windowsills. There were also many more pedestrians on the street; some stopped to glance at the carriages before continuing on their way.
The carriage turned two corners.
We arrived at the church quickly.
Audrien's church was more than twice the size of the one in Frosttown. Above the porch was a marble relief depicting a goddess holding a lamb. Although a few clumps of moss grew in the grout lines of the walls, it was generally well-maintained.
The carriage stopped at the church entrance.
Emma was the first to jump out of the car, standing on the stone slabs in front of the church, looking up at the familiar door, taking a deep breath, and then exhaling slowly.
"Phew... Master, we're back!"
She turned around and reached out her hand to Wayne, who was getting out of the car, her tone carrying a hint of inexplicable excitement.
"When we left last time, I thought we'd never come back."
Wayne got out of the car and reached out to pat her head.
"Here we are now."
Emma shrank back as her neck was being rubbed.
Ella alighted from the other side of the carriage, stood beside it, and looked around at her surroundings. Her gaze lingered on the large gate for a moment, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
Vera was the last to get off the bus. Standing in front of the church, she clasped her hands together and looked somewhat awkwardly at the building, which was several times larger than she had imagined, unsure of what to say.
Charman stood at the door, watching this scene with a smile, and then pushed open the church door.
"Don't just stand there, come in."
Wayne nodded to Thomason.
Thomason understood and bowed slightly to Wayne: "Sir, I'll head back now. There are still some things to take care of at the resettlement site."
"Okay. Thank you for your hard work."
"It's not hard work, it's what I should do."
Thomason nodded to Charman again, turned and jumped into the carriage, pulling the reins. The carriage turned around and drove back the way it came.
