Witch Training Manual: My Water Magic Is Wrong
Chapter 400 The Demon's Spying
When Wayne walked out of the city lord's mansion.
It was already quite dark.
Street vendors were packing up, several women were carrying washbasins into the alley, and the patrolling guards, having changed shifts, were yawning and heading back to their barracks. Everything seemed perfectly normal, just like what an ordinary city would look like at dusk.
But Wayne knew this was just the end of the day.
When the last ray of dawn disappears, the city will turn upside down.
The city lord's mansion is located in the northern part of the south city. To reach the sewer entrance, you'll need to cross three main streets and an abandoned old town area. Raine explained clearly that the sewer entrance is beneath the collapsed temple in the old town; once there, just look for an iron gate marked with closed eyes.
After walking about half a block, Wayne sensed someone watching him, but he wasn't quite sure where they were.
In a corner unknown to Wayne, whispers were rustling softly.
"He seems to still be awake..."
"It's a child."
"I really want to eat him."
"Just a little while longer... the sun hasn't completely set yet..."
"Wait a little longer."
"Don't let him get away."
Wayne vaguely heard some sounds.
He quickened his pace.
The roads in the old town are not easy to walk on. Most of the stone pavement is broken, and weeds grow wildly from the cracks, making it slippery to walk on.
It took about seven or eight minutes to walk.
A figure suddenly appeared at the corner ahead.
It's a child.
A little girl, about seven or eight years old, was wearing a dirty floral dress and standing barefoot in the middle of the road.
She was crying loudly and looked lost.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up, revealing a face streaked with tears: "Big brother... I'm lost... can you take me home?"
Wayne didn't stop and walked past her.
Wayne walked a little further, turned a corner around a wall that was half collapsed, and saw another figure ahead.
This time it was an old man.
She was hunched over, her hair gray, and collapsed at the doorway of a dilapidated house, one of her shoes lying a few steps away. Seeing Wayne approach, she shakily stretched out a hand, her voice hoarse and weak.
"Child... kind child... I fell and can't get up... could you help me up? Just a little bit..."
Wayne continued walking forward without stopping.
The old man panicked and grabbed his trouser leg with a force that was unusual for an elderly person who had fallen and injured themselves.
"Don't go! Don't go! You're just taking me home, what's wrong with that? It's only a short walk! How can you be so heartless?"
Wayne stopped.
The old man grabbed his hand with unusually strong force.
"open."
The old man was taken aback, but quickly changed to an even more pitiful tone: "Child, please have mercy..."
"Don't think I don't know you're a devil."
The old man's expression froze on his face. His wrinkled face seemed to have been paused; his smile, his pitifulness, his pleading—all of it was frozen in an instant.
"So you could tell."
She loosened Wayne's trouser leg and slowly stood up. Her movements were no longer shaky; it was as if every vertebra had been stretched open from the bottom up. Once she stood upright, she was more than a head taller than Wayne.
Wayne smiled helplessly.
"The devil is looking for a priest? You're really looking for the sun with a lantern."
The moment he finished speaking, a burst of holy light exploded in his right palm, the flames illuminating the dim alleyway for a fleeting moment. Before the old man could react, Wayne had already moved.
Even if the explosive power of a fifth-tier body cultivator is suppressed to two or three tenths, it is still beyond the reaction time of a second-tier demon. He took a step forward, pressed down with his right hand, and swiftly slammed the opponent's head into the ground.
Bang!
Pebbles flew everywhere.
The demon's head slammed into the shattered stone slab, and its entire face was pinned to the ground, unable to move.
It struggled frantically with its limbs, its hands clawing wildly, and its legs pounding the stone slabs with a creaking sound, but Wayne's thin arm pressed down hard on the back of its neck, preventing it from even turning over.
"No! How can you be so powerful!" the demon's voice squeezed out from between clenched teeth, filled with shock and rage. "How could a child... possibly know holy light magic?!"
It suddenly realized what was happening.
"You...you're not a child!"
Wayne looked down at it without replying. With a flick of his left hand, a second ray of holy light materialized.
The flames in his palm illuminated the entire alley as bright as day, with a faint golden edge that was a high-level variant of the Holy Light Purification spell—the Blade of Judgment.
"Now that you know, I have no choice but to send you to your death."
With a flick of the wrist, the light fell.
There were no screams.
The moment the holy light poured into the demon's skull, its body tensed up abruptly, then collapsed limply to the ground as if all its support had been drained.
The corpses on the ground began to revert to their original forms.
The old man's face melted and collapsed like wax, revealing grayish-brown skin and a pair of white, pupil-less eyes. The joints of his limbs bent backward, and his fingers turned into the shape of claws.
This is its true nature.
A low-ranking demon, its strength lay in its excellent disguise, specifically targeting lone children and the elderly. If Wayne's soul perception hadn't been unsuppressed, he might have had to get within two meters of it to detect its weakness.
He crouched down and searched the demon's corpse, but found nothing.
"Poor wretch."
[Kill Confirmed - Abyssal Whisperer (Tier 2)]
The holy light purification is complete; the soul has not escaped.
[Note: The devil seeking a priest is indeed like searching for the sun with a lantern. Your move will give it months of nightmares before it's reincarnated in the abyss.]
[Note 2: There are three other presences lurking nearby, watching you. You acted too quickly; they didn't have time to intervene. They are probably reassessing whether to continue treating you as prey.]
[P.S.: It will be dark in five minutes. You need to find a safe place as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will be in great danger.]
Wayne stood up and dusted off his hands.
He glanced back.
Behind the half-collapsed wall, a dirty little foot peeked out from the corner.
The lost little girl huddled behind the wall, peeking out only half her head, her eyes fixed on the demon's corpse on the ground, then quickly glancing at Wayne.
Wayne raised his chin towards her.
"What, you want a hug too?"
The little girl abruptly pulled her head back. There was silence behind the wall for about two seconds, then came a flurry of footsteps—she had run away.
Wayne didn't chase after him, but turned around and continued on his way.
There isn't much time left.
After passing through the last alley in the old town, a half-collapsed temple came into view. The roof had mostly collapsed, with only a few crooked stone pillars supporting the facade. The walls were covered with vines and moss, and the door had long since rotted away, leaving only a dark, gaping hole.
Wayne bypassed the main gate and found an iron gate on the foundation of the temple on the side.
