The little one's purse connects the two worlds, turning a desolate village into a paradise.
Chapter 243 Uses of Plastic Bags
"Grandma Liu, what are you going to do with all these bags?" Grandma Li asked in a low voice as she saw Grandma Liu walking over quickly with a large handful of plastic bags in her hand.
"I'm going to the backyard to check on the eggplant and persimmon seedlings from before. I heard about greenhouses yesterday and I was thinking of using these to see if I could grow one."
"Gousheng and I will put these jars in your house and come with you." Granny Li pulled the village chief and gently placed the jars containing watermelon and pumpkin seeds into the house.
Ya Ya was wrapped in a big army green quilt, her little head peeking out as she slept soundly.
The two carefully placed the jar in a spot where it wouldn't be easily bumped or tripped over, then came out of the house and followed Granny Liu to the backyard.
Grandma Liu briefly explained her idea, Grandma Li took a rake from the cellar, and the village chief picked up some thin sticks from the side. The three of them squatted by the earthen ridge in the backyard, bent over, and gently raked away the thin layer of topsoil along the ridge.
The various fruits and vegetables planted in this plot have been there for ten days now.
If the weather were warm, the vegetables would have sprouted long ago, but this little vegetable patch hasn't shown any signs of sprouting even after half a day.
Grandma Liu painedly picked out some of the spoiled seeds. Any seeds that felt soft and shriveled, looked black and sticky, or had mold growing on them were rotten.
Some seeds are swollen and white; these are good seeds, but they've been frozen due to the low temperature and are slowly sprouting in the soil.
After gathering the seeds back together and burying them properly, the three of them worked together to carry two baskets of thoroughly burned wood ash.
Reach out and grab handfuls of wood ash, then sprinkle it evenly on the soil in the seedbed, spreading a thin layer between the seed rows. This will not only warm the cold air from the ground and raise the soil temperature, but also loosen the soil and prevent pests.
After spreading the wood ash, gently rake it to mix it evenly with the topsoil, making sure the ash is just the right thickness to cover the seeds. Then, Grandma Liu picked up a few thin sticks and stuck them into the soil next to the seed holes dug in the furrow.
Three thin wooden sticks are firmly inserted around a seed hole, forming a triangular support.
"I was thinking about the greenhouse that my daughter mentioned last night. I don't know if this method will work, but I have to give it a try." After inserting the wooden sticks, Grandma Liu picked out a reasonably sized transparent plastic bag and flung it open with a whoosh.
This is a bag with small handles on both sides. She turned the bag upside down and threaded the plastic bag through three small sticks from top to bottom, covering the seed nest supported by the wooden sticks.
"These two ears are cleverly designed. If it's cold at night, you can pull them together and tie them tight to trap the heat inside." Granny Li nodded as she watched Granny Liu's actions.
The village chief stroked his chin and examined the three sticks for a moment, then put his hand into the middle of the sticks; they were indeed airtight.
It should be feasible.
With the first sample completed, the three quickly covered the entire vegetable patch with small plastic bags.
"If this method works, we can use it to grow leaves from watermelon and pumpkin seedlings as well." The village chief looked at the rows of small plastic bags on the ground, his eyes filled with anticipation.
The morning breeze swept through the vegetable garden, causing the plastic bags to sway gently and create a rustling sound.
"Alright, we'll know the result in three to five days." Granny Liu straightened up and patted the dirt off her hands.
The three of them tidied up the rakes and bamboo baskets on the ground, and slowly walked towards the front yard with their things. When they passed the stone wall that Zhao Hu and Da Niu had built together yesterday, they stopped in their tracks and walked over.
The village chief stepped forward and gently pushed the wall, but the wall didn't budge; it was very solid.
The stone wall next to it, plastered with yellow mud, has cracks in the surface of the mud, looking loose and flimsy. When you reach out and touch it, chunks of mud fall off with a splash.
Although these mud-plastered stone walls were reinforced with thick wooden sticks, they were still fundamentally weak, relying solely on the stones for support. If they were to be washed away by continuous heavy rain, they would inevitably collapse in no time.
The village chief stared at the gray cement mortar filling the cracks in the stone wall for a long time. It looked solid, but he still had to put it to the test to see if it could withstand the force.
I don't know if it's completely dry or not; it feels hard to the touch on the outside.
He led Granny Li and Granny Liu to put all the things into the cellar. When they got to the front yard, they saw Fang Tiesheng, Fang Daniu, and Zhao Hu holding water cups, preparing to go out to brush their teeth.
"Old Fang, come take a look in the backyard after you finish brushing your teeth. The cement on this wall in the backyard looks completely dry."
Before Fang Tiesheng could speak, Da Niu's eyes lit up, and after brushing his teeth in a few quick strokes, he went to the backyard.
Zhao Hu followed closely behind. Fang Tiesheng remembered that the form that Boss Zhao had given him said it would take 3 days to test, and it wasn't even dry yet! Seeing that his son had already gone over and hadn't even brushed his teeth, he quickly grabbed a cup and rushed to the backyard.
When they arrived at the stone wall, Zhao Hu and Da Niu were poking at it with their fingers.
Thankfully, it wasn't pushed.
Old Fang took a few breaths: "No, don't push it, it's not completely dry yet, please don't push it."
"Huh?" Zhao Hu looked at it in confusion. It looked rock hard.
However, he obediently withdrew his hand.
There's only so much cement; once it's poured out, there's no more testing. But judging by its appearance, it's definitely better than yellow mud.
Fang Tiesheng stood with his hands behind his back, looking around and silently calculating in his mind how much it would cost to cover the entire slope near the mountain with cement walls, and also what Da Niu had mentioned about digging drainage ditches on the mountainside and Dr. Chen's septic tank...
As everyone was whispering and discussing around the wall, Doctor Chen arrived carrying a brick.
"Tiesheng, I'm afraid this brick won't work. It's too loose and leaks a lot. If we use this brick for the septic tank, sewage will slowly seep out over time, polluting the well water and vegetable gardens, and the whole village will stink."
The village chief frowned, staring at the red brick in Dr. Chen's hand.
Zhao Hu took the red bricks from Dr. Chen. They were indeed too loose, just as Dr. Chen had said. They probably wouldn't be suitable for building a house.
After the lime in the kiln is burned, several more kilns of blue bricks still need to be fired.
"Dr. Chen, don't rush. Let's try it out after this wall dries completely and see how well the cement works. They must have a use for making these bricks. We can build it up with cement then," Fang Tiesheng said calmly.
"Yes, take your time, there's no rush. We've been doing this for years, it's okay to do it a little later." The village chief patted Doctor Chen on the shoulder.
That's just how Dr. Chen is; whenever he comes across something interesting, he has to figure it out as soon as possible. These past few days, besides eating and sleeping, he's been thinking about that septic tank.
