Upon hearing the sound, everyone instinctively turned their heads and looked up, immediately spotting Ya Ya, who had changed her clothes again, wearing a pink hoodie with tiny water droplets on the wide brim.
Grandma Liu hurriedly got up and took Ya Ya's hand: "Darling, why are you all wet? Is it raining over there? Oh dear, come inside with Grandma and change into some dry clothes, so you don't catch a cold."
When Ya Ya heard her mother-in-law's words, she grinned and bounced lightly on the spot twice. As she bounced, the small water droplets hanging on her body and head fell down.
"Grandma, I didn't get wet in the rain! Look!" Ya Ya raised her hand and tugged at her pink outer garment, her eyes full of excitement: "This is called a raincoat. When I wear it, the rain won't get on me."
After saying that, Ya Ya turned around again, showing off her new clothes to Granny Liu and the others with a rather proud air.
The village chief, Fang Tiesheng, and Zhao Hu all curiously came closer. Grandma Liu reached into the raincoat and touched Ya Ya's sleeve. The blue fleece clothes she was wearing underneath felt dry and warm, and there was indeed no moisture at all. Only then did she feel relieved.
She ran her fingertips along the fabric of the outer layer of clothing called a raincoat. It was somewhat like the material of the plastic bags she usually kept, but it felt much more substantial and even a bit like a thin layer of leather.
As the bud moves, it makes a soft, rustling sound.
"So this is called a raincoat? A special garment for rainy days... It looks quite nice." Zhao Hu touched the hood on Ya Ya's back. "Having this will make it much more convenient to go out on rainy days. It's lighter than a raincoat."
"Yes, it's really useful! It keeps you dry at all! I bought a lot, everyone has one!" As she spoke, Ya Ya raised her hand and pointed gently, and the familiar little cart appeared out of thin air beside her.
The village chief reached out and lifted the lid of the cart, revealing neatly arranged thin, square packages and a few small sticks with a checkered pattern.
There was also a large plastic bag underneath, and you could vaguely see that it contained the clothes that Nannan had changed out of last time.
"Are these square pieces raincoats? They're so small and compact." The village chief picked up a bag that had been opened.
"Yes! The one Grandpa Village Chief is holding was opened by Auntie, so you can take it out directly. The others are new and haven't been opened yet," Ya Ya nodded emphatically.
The village chief looked at the thin bag in his hand; it felt weightless.
He pulled out his raincoat and unfolded it. The style looked similar to the camouflage work clothes they were wearing now, but the material felt different. The color was gray, and it was somewhat transparent but not completely transparent, giving it a hazy appearance.
Curious, he put on the raincoat, and a strange smell filled his nostrils, a bit pungent.
Fang Tiesheng wrinkled his nose. He noticed that anything made of plastic always had a smell, and the newer it was, the stronger the smell would be. The smell would disappear after being left out for a few days.
I need to put this raincoat aside for a while.
It's a pity it's not raining outside, otherwise I could give it a try.
"Then what are these five little sticks?" Zhao Hu picked up a checkered umbrella.
"This is an umbrella, for keeping out the rain," Ya Ya explained.
Umbrella?
Several adults gathered together. This small stick was wrapped in checkered cloth, which looked like a piece of cloth folded up, somewhat similar to an oil-paper umbrella. But this stick was so short that even if it was opened, it probably wouldn't be able to cover their heads.
Zhao Hu examined the umbrella in his hand, filled with doubt.
Just as Ya Ya was about to demonstrate, she suddenly remembered what her aunt had told her earlier: the umbrella tip was sharp and could easily poke people, so children shouldn't do it themselves. So she said, "Uncle Zhao, could you undo this button in the middle of the umbrella?"
Following Ya Ya's instructions, Zhao Hu unfastened the umbrella, and it immediately opened. He shook it.
"Press this little dot again, be careful, Auntie says these sharp points can easily prick people." Ya Ya pointed to a raised button at the end of the umbrella handle with her little finger.
Zhao Hu subconsciously stretched his arm out a little, wary of any hidden weapon that might suddenly appear from the object, and gently pressed the button with his fingertips.
With a soft "bang," the short umbrella instantly unfolded, transforming into a large, polygonal canopy.
This umbrella is quite large when it's open; it's even bigger than the oil-paper umbrella that the village chief treasures.
The people present immediately gathered around, marveling at the suddenly enlarged umbrella.
"Even the mechanism of the umbrella is so ingenious!"
"It feels surprisingly light in my hand, and the fabric is so smooth."
Grandma Liu held the umbrella by the handle, looking curiously at the canopy above her head. Below were several metal ribs that shone with a metallic luster, making it look exceptionally high-end.
"I'll go get some water to try." Zhao Hu got up and scooped a cup of water from the vat.
Grandma Liu held up the umbrella, feeling a little nervous.
A large cup of water splashed onto the umbrella with a dull thud. To their surprise, the water didn't seep into the umbrella at all; instead, it slid smoothly down the umbrella's surface. Grandma Liu, watching the water droplets dripping from the edge of the umbrella, sighed repeatedly.
"Wow, this thing is amazing! It's so effective at keeping out the rain! And it's not tiring to hold."
Grandma Liu, Village Chief Zhao Hu, and two others were enthusiastically examining the rain gear. Fang Tiesheng had already taken out his notebook and started taking notes, while Ya Ya sat beside him, shining a flashlight on him and muttering to herself:
"Grandpa Fang, I bought thirty raincoats for five yuan each, and five umbrellas for nineteen yuan and eighty cents each. The raincoats I'm wearing are specially made for children; they're colorful and patterned. I bought four of them for thirty-five yuan each."
Fang Tiesheng wrote furiously, "So how many vegetables did you sell today? Are they all sold out?"
"They're all sold out! Just a little while. Oh, by the way, Grandpa Fang and Grandma Wang even told us to raise the price, saying we sold them too cheaply, so we'll make even more money this time!"
Fang Tiesheng was taken aback. He had heard his daughter mention this Grandma Wang before; she was a buyer. In that area, there were people who complained about the price being too low and were willing to pay more.
"What are the prices now? Do you remember, little one?"
Ya Ya took out her phone. She had taken a lot of photos while everyone was buying groceries, especially of that magical little blackboard.
"Grandpa Fang, I took a picture. Look, this is called a blackboard. You can write on it and erase it. It has a lot of colored pens. My aunt has already bought them for me at that store. They'll even give me the pens as a gift."
Ya Ya's words were somewhat disorganized, but she was still able to express the meaning very clearly.
Fang Tiesheng leaned closer and saw a black board on the phone screen next to a silver flat box, with the prices of various dishes written on it.
"This is a scale. Auntie's scale seems to weigh differently than ours. We sold...sold..."
Ya Ya scratched her head, wondering how many she had sold.
Since we got a small watch, it's become harder to keep track of income. We used to be able to grab the old paper bills and count them.
"7100." Jie Chi's voice rang in Ya Ya's mind.
