Chapter 16 The Mystery of Renting a Room

"Song Wanxi? She lives here?" Si Yang's heart skipped a beat. He quickly walked up to Si Chuying, looking completely bewildered.

He knew this place like the back of his hand; every blade of grass and every brick was etched in his mind. This was clearly the house rented by that single mother, so how could it possibly involve Song Wanxi? He'd heard Si Chuying mention her before; wasn't she a prospective college student?

"Yes, she's lived here for a long time. She was living here when I met her, for at least several years."

Si Chuying was startled by Si Yang's suddenly amplified voice. She had just rushed over on her bike and hadn't noticed that there was someone standing quietly at the small intersection by the roadside.

"A few years?" Si Yang was even more confused because, according to previous media reports, the single mother was very poor, taking care of the child alone, and renting a dilapidated small house. She had been living there for several months, but the exact number of months was not specified.

Moreover, Uncle Wang, who sells fruit across the street, also personally confirmed this statement.

This timeline doesn't seem right.

But at this moment, he didn't have time to think it through. He could only reluctantly come up with an excuse for himself. Perhaps Song Wanxi was occupying the house, so the single mother hadn't had a chance to rent it yet. He had originally been planning how to deal with that woman and how to avoid the tragedy that would happen in a few months. He thought he could resolve the problem smoothly this time, but a new problem arose.

Where does that single mother live now? Will she ever rent this house again?

Si Yang scratched his head, feeling as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over his entire body. He felt cold all over and could barely move his feet, overwhelmed by a deep sense of powerlessness.

crunch--

The old wooden door made a jarring sound and then was slowly pulled open.

A girl in a pure white dress walked out of the room. She reached out her right hand to brush the hair in front of her ear behind her shoulder, her eyebrows curved, and she gave Si Chuying a warm smile.

"Senior Song, you look so beautiful today." Si Chuying immediately forgot about the little incident just now, walked over quickly, and naturally took Song Wanxi's arm, her tone full of admiration.

However, a simple compliment made Song Wanxi's cheeks blush slightly. She lowered her head and replied in a soft voice, very politely, "Yingying is also very cute."

Si Chuying turned around with a smile and looked at Si Yang, who was still standing there in a daze. She secretly raised an eyebrow at him and said, "Senior Sister Song, this is my older brother, Si Yang. The student ID card you are using belongs to him."

Si Yang then snapped out of his daze, and the instant his wandering gaze shifted to Song Wanxi, he immediately withdrew it like lightning.

This...this is clearly the girl who asked to borrow his student ID card a month ago, and whom he refused without hesitation.

Si Yang has always had an exceptional memory, especially as a top student in archaeology. Having worked with artifacts for years, he knows every minute detail by heart. Over time, his ability to recognize people has also become incredibly refined. Even though he was rushing to class and only saw her profile, it was enough for him to recognize her at a glance.

"Hello, Senior Si Yang!"

Song Wanxi nodded at him, a hint of surprise clearly flashing in her eyes. But she quickly concealed her emotions, her expression remaining gentle.

"Song Wanxi, you... hello." Si Yang felt a jumble of chaotic thoughts rushing towards him, his brain went blank, and he involuntarily started to stutter.

"Brother, have some self-respect, will you? Stop messing around with those stones. Look at you, you can't even talk to people properly anymore." Si Chuying retorted irritably, and then nudged him hard with her elbow.

"I..." Si Yang was on the verge of tears. Could he say this information at this time? He was bearing all the pressure. He had to remember all the details. It was like having a head full of wheat and then suddenly having a few soybeans thrown in. He had to carefully pick out the soybeans, react quickly, and not make any mistakes.

My brain is so full of these things that it's already overloaded.

The air fell silent instantly.

"Yingying, didn't you say you were going to tutoring class later?" Finally, Song Wanxi broke the silence, "If you don't leave now, you'll be late."

"Oh dear, I almost forgot." Si Chuying slapped her forehead, then put on a coquettish look and grabbed Si Yang's arm tightly with her free hand. "How about my brother and my senior, Xiao Song, come with me to the tutoring class? I have some questions I want to ask her."

Si Yang was stunned for a moment, feeling somewhat helpless. He hadn't expected his sister, who was so outgoing and carefree in front of strangers, to be so affectionate and shameless in front of her idol. However, the combination of him, Si Chuying, and Song Wanxi just seemed strange no matter how you looked at it.

But then he thought again, it's only a fifteen-minute walk from here to the tutoring center near the school. Fifteen minutes won't interfere with anything else. Besides, he has a lot of questions he wants to ask Song Wanxi privately. Right now, he's desperately trying to find the right words to start the conversation without sounding abrupt.

"Sure," Song Wanxi and Si Yang said almost in unison. As soon as they finished speaking, they exchanged a glance, then instinctively looked away.

The three walked side by side, and after only two or three minutes, they passed a supermarket. Si Chuying immediately stopped and pointed to the supermarket entrance, "Brother, let's go to the supermarket and buy a bag of Sachima (a type of Chinese pastry). I want to eat some."

Si Yang couldn't have been happier. He could never join in on conversations between girls, and he could never understand why they always had so much to talk about. To avoid embarrassment in front of outsiders, he even lingered in the supermarket for a couple more minutes, picking and choosing before finally picking up the largest bag of Sachima.

The three met up again. Si Yang opened the large package of Sachima, casually pulled out one, and handed it to Song Wanxi. Song Wanxi was slightly taken aback, then shyly said thank you. Si Yang nodded slightly and didn't say anything more.

Then, he took out another one and handed it to Si Chuying, who was standing next to him.

"Brother, I don't eat sweets, you know that. A beautiful woman doesn't weigh more than 100 pounds, so don't ruin me." Si Chuying proudly turned her head to the side. "Same as always, I'll eat the raisins on top, and you eat the sachima."

Si Yang couldn't remember exactly when this rule was set. He only remembered that every time, Si Chuying would use her chubby little hands to pick all the raisins off the sachima, leaving it looking like a mess. And he could only smile helplessly and then eat it in one bite.

He unwrapped the small package and held the raisin-side of the sachima up to Si Chuying. Unexpectedly, his sister grabbed Song Wanxi's hand, held it up to the sachima, and said with a smile, "Senior Song, I know you like raisins too. You take this first, it's the biggest."

Song Wanxi's hands trembled slightly, and her cheeks flushed instantly to the roots of her neck. She only took one from it. "Th...thank you."

"No need to thank me, he's my brother." Si Chuying wasn't as shy as Song Wanxi. She reached out and swept all the raisins off the plate, then glanced at the time on her arm. Her expression changed. "Oh no, I'm going to be late. I'll be going now. You guys make yourselves at home."

Before Song Wanxi could react, he grabbed the only shared bicycle at the supermarket entrance, pedaled furiously, and disappeared around the corner.

After Si Chuying left, a brief silence fell between them. Si Yang didn't feel awkward; his mind was filled with the image of that single mother. Where had she gone? If he couldn't find her, wouldn't his trip back have been for nothing?

Even so, he was afraid of returning to the correct timeline. Based on past experience, each time he went back, things would only be worse than before. And he no longer knew how much worse things could get.

Amidst his chaotic thoughts, Si Yang suddenly had a thought: The landlord!

He could easily contact the single mother through the landlord. Even if the current timeline is wrong, if we go back to the normal timeline, that woman rented the same house as Song Wanxi, so they should at least have the same landlord, right?
