Liu Bei led his army out of the manor and headed north for about an hour, where they joined up with the troops of Liu He and Zou Jing, who had come from the county town.

Liu He ultimately dared not go to the battlefield in person, but sent the prefectural magistrate to represent him, and assigned more than two hundred guards and county soldiers as ceremonial guards, along with dozens of empty carts full of flags, drums, gongs and cooking utensils, to be under the command of Zou Jing.

Zou Jing's main force of 500 soldiers from various prefectures and counties was well-armored and disciplined, making them a true fighting force.

The three parties established their base at a place twenty miles north of Zhuoxian County, backed by a gentle slope, facing a tributary of the Tao River, and with a wide view.

The deployment of the state and county troops, which was intended to boost morale, was quite well-organized. Zou Jing led his 500 elite troops and Liu Bei's 800 main force in crimson uniforms, positioning them in the center of the slope, slightly forward, in a slightly arc-shaped formation according to the terrain. Spears and halberds were in front, followed by bows and crossbows, with cavalry flanking on both sides.

The more than two hundred county and prefectural soldiers and auxiliary troops, along with dozens of supply wagons loaded with flags, drums, and gongs, were divided into several groups, spaced several miles apart, and sparsely arrayed on the high ground on the left and right sides.

The soldiers were ordered to raise all the flags on the chariots and to disperse the auxiliary troops behind the formation to set up more stoves and spread smoke and dust.

From a distance, one could see the red flags, black flags, and various colored banners of the Han people fluttering in the wind, stretching across the hillside for miles. Smoke rose from the chimneys, and drums and horns sounded from time to time. The view was boundless, making it impossible to discern the reality from the illusion.

Especially with the hundreds of flags fluttering wildly in the afternoon wind, and the deliberate spacing between them, they visually resembled a vast army stretching for miles.

This is precisely a bluff to intimidate the enemy before they even engage in battle.

When the Yellow Turban Rebellion first broke out, it was mostly a mob of peasant uprisings. How could they have ever seen a regular army formation? But seeing this "Han army formation" that covered the fields with banners and occupied a vast area, they were already intimidated before the battle even started.

By the time the formation was complete, it was past noon.

Liu Bei ordered the entire army to seize this last opportunity to rest, eat dry rations, water the horses, and inspect bowstrings, swords, and spears.

The soldiers silently chewed on the millet and dried meat they carried with them, swallowing it with water from their leather pouches.

The warhorses were also unsaddled and led by auxiliary soldiers to the river to drink water and wash their mouths and noses.

The atmosphere was somber and stagnant, with only the occasional snort of warhorses and the sound of banners fluttering.

Many of the new recruits were pale-faced, gripping their weapons tightly, their eyes frequently glancing towards the deserted official road to the northeast.

Guan Yu stood at the front of the battle, his phoenix eyes slightly closed, as if he were resting.

Zhang Fei, on the other hand, was restless and would occasionally tap his horse's belly with the heel of his boot, while the tip of his eighteen-foot spear unconsciously tapped the ground.

Liu Bei dismounted and sat briefly on a couch spread out by his personal guards, his gaze calmly fixed on the northeast. Jian Yong stood to his side holding a feather fan, while Tian Yu, Qian Zhao, and others stood with their hands on their swords.

At three quarters past the hour of Wei (1-3 PM), the sun began to set slightly westward.

Dust suddenly rose on the official road to the northeast!

First came a few riders, then a dozen or so; these were the scouts who had been sent out, galloping back at breakneck speed.

The lead rider was Li Zheng, his face covered in dust and sweat beading on his forehead. He rode to within ten paces of Liu Bei's horse, then dismounted and hurriedly reported, bowing respectfully:

"My lord! The Yellow Turban rebels are here! They're less than ten li away!"

He took a deep breath and then reported clearly: "The rebel army is coming along the west bank of the Tao River, covering the mountains and plains with tremendous force. A rough estimate suggests that their numbers exceed six thousand!"

Liu Bei remained silent, his expression cold and stern. He was unfazed by emotions, displaying an air of composure that would remain unchanged even if Mount Tai collapsed before him.

Seeing this, Li Zheng felt somewhat reassured and continued, "Although the bandits are numerous, their fighting strength is probably even less than we previously estimated! This is because their ranks are mostly mixed with the elderly, weak, women, and children, and some are even driving cattle and leading sheep, carrying pots and baskets, making them appear to be migrating rather than fighting!"

"As they marched, the noise and commotion were deafening, with no orderly ranks or formations; the front and rear ranks crowded the road, stretching for miles!"

"Six thousand? And women and children too?" Zhang Fei, standing nearby, widened his eyes in astonishment. "This... what kind of war is this? Bringing families along, are they fleeing or fighting?"

Qian Zhao, standing to the side, patiently explained, "Yide, you may not know this, but when rebellions first broke out, many people fled in droves, and this was often the case."

"When Emperor Guangwu first raised his army, the soldiers from Chunling were few in number and lacked weapons. Some even rode oxen and were accompanied by women and children."

"Before the Battle of Kunyang, the Han army had just suffered a defeat, and the soldiers were terrified. Emperor Guangwu also rode alone to gather the scattered soldiers. His sister Bo Ji and Liu Yuan were among the soldiers and were almost captured by the enemy. This was the normal state of affairs when chaos suddenly broke out and the army was hastily assembled."

Upon hearing this, Zhang Fei burst into laughter, his bushy beard bristling: "So that's how it is! Doesn't that mean these bandits look intimidating, but are actually a complete mess? I, Old Zhang, can lead my iron cavalry to break through their defenses, find their weak points, and slaughter them seven times in and seven times out!"

Liu Bei sat upright on his folding chair. Upon hearing Zhang Fei's words, he nodded slightly, a hint of approval in his eyes: "Yide now knows how to assess the enemy's strengths and weaknesses. For the past ten days, you have diligently studied military texts and pondered deeply. This is truly the way of a wise man who keeps his skills hidden until the right time to act. You have seen the enemy's weaknesses and used your elite cavalry to exploit them; you have already grasped a key to military strategy."

But he quickly changed the subject: "However, as Sun Tzu said: 'In general, in war, one engages with the enemy using orthodox methods and wins with unorthodox methods.'"

"The Way of Peace misled the masses with heretical words. Many of its followers were religious fanatics who firmly believed that 'the Yellow Heaven shall rise.' They wore talismans and believed that they were protected by gods, and were not afraid of death or injury."

"These bandits cannot be judged by ordinary standards. Even if our army breaks through from the old and weak, their core members will not waver. Instead, they will fight to the death to block our advance, and even drive the old and weak to fill the gaps to slow down our advance."

"If our army's morale falters and we fall into a chaotic battle, given their superior numbers, the outcome will be unpredictable."

His gaze swept over the assembled generals, and he said in a deep voice, "Therefore, the key to this battle lies in first using a dignified formation and orderly banners to crush their core elite troops! Break their momentum and shatter their courage! Then, use surprise attacks to seize the opportunity amidst the chaos and sweep away their weak points!"

"At that time, their core members would be lost, their orders would be ignored, and the old and weak would panic and flee back to their own lines. In that case, the entire army would surely collapse and scatter like birds and beasts!"

Zhang Fei scratched his head and asked urgently, "What you say is true, my lord! Then...where are the 'backbone' and 'fighting heroes' of this band of bandits?"

Before Liu Bei could answer, Guan Yu, who had remained silent, slightly opened his phoenix eyes, a cold glint in them, and said in a deep voice, "It must be the vanguard or the central army of the enemy, surrounded by banners. Since they are the backbone of the leaders, they must rely on their bravery to lead the way, or protect their lord in the middle, to inspire courage in the entire army. Their armor and weapons should also be more complete than the rest of the troops."

Liu Bei glanced approvingly at Guan Yu and nodded, saying, "Yun Chang is absolutely right. These chaotic troops are no different from the private armies of powerful clansmen. They have a few brave and fierce warriors as their 'vanguard' and 'confidants,' while the rest are mostly just flag-waving and bluffing."

Many armies at the end of the Han Dynasty exhibited this characteristic in their initial stages. Therefore, when two armies clashed at this time, the bravery of the generals and the sharpness of the vanguard could often determine the outcome of the battle.

As the world descends into chaos and the various armies reorganize and transform into grand battles and legion duels, the effectiveness of individual martial prowess will gradually diminish.

"Therefore," Liu Bei said, his gaze falling on Guan Yu, "the task of directly crushing their vanguard and breaking their morale is entrusted to Yun Chang! Once their vanguard approaches and their momentum falters, you will lead all the cavalry to charge straight into the heart of their vanguard, crushing them in one fell swoop and shattering their edge!"

"Yu, I obey!" Guan Yu clasped his hands in a fist salute, his phoenix eyes blazing with fighting spirit.

Not long after Liu Bei finalized his plan, the smoke and dust from the northeast grew increasingly thick.

Finally, a wave of earthy yellow, accompanied by deafening noise, cries, curses and chaotic footsteps, surged out of the horizon and rolled along the banks of the Peach River toward the field where the Han army was arrayed!

At this moment, Cheng Yuanzhi, the Yellow Turban leader of Zhuojun, was full of pride and high spirits.

Since the uprising began at the end of February with a flag-raising ceremony in Liangxiang, within just a few days, the two counties of Liangxiang and Yangxiang were captured. Wherever they went, county temples were burned down, and local officials either fled or died. Followers flocked in, and the number of followers exceeded six thousand.

He rode a dappled warhorse captured from the county magistrate of Fangcheng, and wore an old leather armor that he had found in the home of some village headman. His yellow turban was tied very conspicuously on his head. Looking at the crowd of followers that covered the mountains and fields behind him, he felt a surge of heroic spirit rush to his head.

"The Azure Heaven is dead, the Yellow Heaven shall rise! In the year of Jiazi, great fortune will come to the world!" He repeatedly pondered the prophecy passed down by the Great Teacher of Wisdom, feeling that every word was precious and that destiny was in his own hands.

Along the way, the Han government was as corrupt as rotten wood, ready to crumble at the slightest touch; the common people had suffered under the Han for too long, and upon hearing of the Yellow Turbans' arrival, many brought food and drink to welcome them.

It's time for the world to change its colors!

The scouts had already reported that the government troops of Zhuojun were arrayed twenty miles north of the city to resist them.

Upon hearing the report, Cheng Yuanzhi merely scoffed. In his view, this was nothing more than the Zhuojun Prefect's last struggle, no different from the previous two counties.

The Han dynasty was corrupt, officials were greedy and corrupt, and the army had no will to fight. How could there be any soldiers willing to fight? Most of them were just bluffing. When the Yellow Turban army arrived, they would surely scatter and flee like birds and beasts.

He simply did not believe that when the prophecy of "Heaven is dead" came true, who would still be willing to die for the crumbling Han Dynasty?

"My comrades!" Cheng Yuanzhi pointed his sword forward, his voice excited and fervent, "Having conquered two counties, have you ever seen a Han army that dares to fight? Have you ever encountered an official who doesn't fear death? No! Not a single one! The fate of the Han dynasty has run its course, the red flag has fallen, and it is time for us Yellow Turban comrades to act on behalf of Heaven and share in peace!"

He took a deep breath and roared with all his might, "Charge! Crush them! Take Zhuojun! Tonight, we'll hold a feast in the prefect's mansion! The gold, silk, millet, and women in the city are yours to take!"

"The Blue Heaven is dead; the Yellow Heaven shall rise!"

"Kill the corrupt official, destroy Zhuojun!"

The frenzied shouts echoed across the plains.

Although the Yellow Turban followers had already trekked more than forty li along the Tao River, panting heavily, the old and weak were even more unsteady on their feet.

But inspired by Cheng Yuanzhi's promise and the "Yellow Heaven" faith, the more than 6,000 Yellow Turban soldiers roared and, without any formation, waved their plows, wooden sticks, machetes, and even sharpened bamboo poles, rushing haphazardly towards the Han army's position with its numerous banners several miles away!

The crowd surged, the yellow turbans thronged, the noise was deafening, and the earth trembled.

Standing on high ground in front of the Han army's lines, one could see a vast, yellowish-brown mass of people surging forward without any order, their momentum quite astonishing. Many of the Han soldiers' faces were pale, and cold sweat seeped from their palms as they gripped their weapons.

But before the army formation, Liu Bei stood on his horse under the banner of "Liu" and saw the Yellow Turban army rushing towards him in such a chaotic manner without taking any rest. He was delighted and not afraid at all, but rather his courage was greatly encouraged.

"The enemy army is arrogant and has brought about its own defeat!" he shouted in a deep voice. "Order the entire army to proceed according to plan! Beat the drums and advance!"

"Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump—!!"

The war drums, more urgent and more impassioned than before, roared from the main camp of the Han army!

The sound of drums thundered, instantly drowning out the clamor of the Yellow Turban army in the distance.

About three miles to the left rear, on a small hill, Zou Jing, fully armored and with his hand on his sword hilt, was intently observing the battlefield.

Seeing that Liu Bei, facing an enemy ten times his size, did not hold his ground but instead decisively ordered the entire army to meet the attack, his courage and decisiveness deeply impressed him.

"What courage! What decisiveness!" Zou Jing couldn't help but murmur in admiration. "Instead of waiting for the enemy to reach the front lines to wear them down, he took the initiative to advance, using our discipline to strike their disarray. This Liu Bei, his military tactics are so decisive and valiant, quite like those of ancient famous generals! Truly, a newborn tiger already possesses the spirit to devour an ox; a newly unfurled eagle already displays the ambition to soar to the clouds!"

In the center of the battlefield, Guan Yu received the order, and a glint of light flashed in his phoenix eyes. He suddenly spurred his horse, and the strong yellow horse neighed and reared up. Then it released its hooves and galloped away!

"Cavalry! Follow me to defeat the enemy!"

"Victory!"

Two hundred elite cavalrymen responded in unison, their voices echoing across the plains.

The sound of hooves was initially somewhat chaotic, but it quickly coalesced into a thunderous roar.

As the art of war says, "Infantry should be organized while cavalry should be dispersed." The two hundred cavalrymen were fully deployed, their hooves flying and dust rising. In addition, the shouts of the riders and the neighing of the warhorses during the gallop made the noise no less than that of the thousands of infantrymen on the other side, and even more so!

Looking from the direction of the Yellow Turban Army, one could see a large cloud of dust suddenly rising from the Han army formation, with countless riders moving about, their hooves thundering, sweeping in from all directions, as if there were thousands of troops, their momentum terrifying!

The Yellow Turban vanguard that charged head-on consisted mostly of Cheng Yuanzhi's more valiant "strongmen" and "veterans," numbering about several hundred.

Although they were driven by fervent religious fervor and greedy for looting after the city fell, they were still flesh and blood. Seeing the might of the Han army's iron cavalry, many of them paused in their tracks, their eyes filled with fear.

"Fear not! The Great and Virtuous Teacher bestows blessings, and divine talismans protect you, making you impervious to swords and spears!" A young man shouted in the crowd, waving talismans.

"Kill the Han dogs and establish a new Heaven!" More and more desperados, their eyes red with fury, roared and charged forward with renewed vigor.

The distance between the two sides closed rapidly: three hundred paces, two hundred paces, one hundred paces... fifty paces!

Just as the Yellow Turban warriors at the very front could clearly see the cold armor and gleaming spear tips of the Han knights, and thought they were about to collide head-on and be torn apart, they closed their eyes in fright. At that moment, Guan Yu, who was leading the charge, suddenly raised his spear and let out a short whistle.

Upon hearing the order, the Han cavalry, who were charging forward, moved in perfect unison, turning sideways and drawing their bows and nocking arrows!

"Hiss hiss hiss hiss—!"

A piercing sound of arrows cutting through the air suddenly rang out! The first wave of arrows rained down from the charging Han cavalry when the two sides were only fifty paces apart!

At such close range, the arrows were incredibly powerful and swift, whistling through the air as they instantly pierced the ranks of the Yellow Turban vanguard!

"what!"

"My eyes!"

"Help me..."

Screams immediately replaced the frenzied shouts.

The Yellow Turban warriors at the forefront were caught off guard, and more than ten of them fell instantly.

Some were pierced in the face by arrows and fell backward; others were shot in the chest and abdomen and fell to the ground, rolling and howling in pain; still others were shot in the thigh, staggered and fell, and were trampled by their comrades who could not stop in time, screaming in agony.

Fifty paces is the distance at which mounted archers can exert their maximum power, and the Han cavalry's advantage in mounted archery was fully demonstrated at this moment.

However, the religious fanaticism of the Yellow Turban Army was indeed extraordinary.

Although this volley of arrows caused casualties, it did not completely halt their advance.

The fall of their comrades only fueled the ferocity of some of the desperados. They trampled over the corpses of their fellow members, brandished their weapons, and roared as they charged forward, now less than thirty paces away!

Guan Yu's expression remained cold and unmoved. He raised his spear again, and a muffled horn sounded from the cavalry ranks.

Upon hearing the order, the Han cavalrymen who were firing arrows instantly split into two and swept diagonally to the left and right!

The horses' hooves pounded the earth, raising clouds of dust that instantly obscured the path ahead.

These two flanking cavalry units did not go far away; instead, they moved along the slightly loose flank of the Yellow Turban army, and at a distance of twenty or thirty paces, they drew their bows and nocked arrows again!

"Whoosh whoosh-!"

Arrows come from the side, or even the rear, making them more cunning and harder to defend against.

Caught off guard, the Yellow Turban army's followers on the flank fell to the ground like wheat that had been cut down.

They tried to turn and defend themselves, but the cavalry were extremely fast, striking and retreating without ever engaging in prolonged combat.

Just as they dealt with the left wing, a hail of arrows rained down from the right.

At the same time, the second cavalry unit that had charged ahead earlier had accelerated and, like a relay race, once again spread out from the front, launching another round of precise mounted archery at the Yellow Turban army, which was in chaos due to the setback of the vanguard and the attack on the flanks!

Guan Yu himself led more than ten of his most elite personal guards, moving swiftly and rapidly before the battle lines. His arrows never missed their mark; with each twang of his bowstring, a Yellow Turban leader or the fiercest bandit would fall dead.

This is exactly the standard tactic of harassing the enemy with mounted archery and flanking maneuvers!

By utilizing the mobility of cavalry, they continuously harassed, weakened, and exhausted the enemy, striking at their morale and command points, while denying them the opportunity for close combat.

The Yellow Turban Army had never seen such a battle tactic before. They charged headlong into the fray with sheer courage, thinking that once they got close enough to engage in melee, they could overwhelm the enemy with their superior numbers.

But now, the enemy comes like a falling sky and leaves like scattered stars, demonstrating the full extent of cavalry tactics in military strategy.

They couldn't even touch the enemy, while their own men were like sitting ducks, being shot down in droves by arrows coming from the front and sides.

As their comrades died one after another and their leaders were called out one after another, the charging ranks were already scattered and huddled together.

The fervor quickly subsided in the face of relentless and efficient death, and panic rapidly took hold.

"I can't take it anymore!"

"Run! Their arrows can pierce the divine talisman!"

Finally, after enduring several rounds of arrows and suffering nearly a hundred casualties, without even touching the hem of the Han army's clothes, the Yellow Turban vanguard began to collapse.

Someone shouted, dropped the wooden stick in their hand, and turned to run away.

One person flees, ten are terrified, a hundred are routed!

The surging, earth-yellow crowd, which had been rushing forward just moments before, crashed against the rocks like waves, its front end shattering and surging back!

The fleeing soldiers collided violently with the unsuspecting crowd that was still surging forward, crying, shouting, cursing, and trampling, and the scene completely spiraled out of control.

"No retreat! Hold the line! Anyone who dares to retreat, I'll chop him down!" At the central command, Cheng Yuanzhi was both shocked and furious to see the vanguard retreating. He spurred his horse forward and swung his sword, slashing down two fleeing soldiers who were trying to turn and run away, attempting to stabilize the situation.

However, the defeat was swift and devastating; individual bravery proved utterly powerless in the face of total collapse.

The fleeing soldiers were like a flock of frightened sheep, impossible to stop, and instead swept him and his dozens of trusted strongmen around him, causing them to stagger and fall.

At this critical moment when the Yellow Turban army's front line was in complete chaos and its central army was wavering!

Guan Yu, who had been lurking at the front lines looking for an opportunity, suddenly lowered his bow and raised his spear, roaring, "The bandit leader is here! My men, follow me—to slay the general and seize the flag!"

His voice resounded across the field, and before he finished speaking, he took the lead and headed straight for Cheng Yuanzhi's central command.

Behind him, more than a hundred Han cavalrymen, seeing their commander so brave, were greatly encouraged. They shouted in unison, quickly put away their bows and arrows, raised their spears and swords, and with Guan Yu as their spearhead, they gathered into a torrent and rushed into the gap that Guan Yu had torn open on horseback!

Guan Yu charged alone, and none who stood in his way were able to escape.

A Yellow Turban warrior wielding an axe roared and charged at them, but Guan Yu pierced his chest and abdomen with a spear and sent him flying several feet away.

Several spearmen charged from the flank, but Guan Yu swept his spear across, and amidst the clang of metal, spears shattered and men flew. His horse, undiminished in speed, galloped straight toward the central army banner.

The routed Yellow Turban soldiers were terrified, and almost none dared to seize the initiative.

Occasionally, some fierce and stubborn individuals would attempt to stop them with weapons, but they would be like a mantis trying to stop a chariot, and would be killed instantly by spears.

Wherever Guan Yu went, it was like a hot knife cutting through fat, with blood raining down, as he forcefully plowed a path through the chaotic crowd.

The cavalry behind them charged in along the flag, attacking from all sides and sweeping all before them.

Cheng Yuanzhi was furious and anxious because he could not stop the rout when he suddenly saw a green-robed Han general break through the formation on horseback, advancing without fear as if entering an empty field, and charging straight towards him. He was so frightened that his soul almost left his body.

Seeing that it was coming too fast and there was no time to dodge, he had no choice but to bite the bullet, roar angrily, urge his mount forward, and swing his sword to meet it, intending to fight like a cornered beast.

In the blink of an eye! The two horses collided!

Guan Yu's phoenix eyes flashed with a sharp light, and his spear shot out like a dragon, swift as lightning!

Cheng Yuanzhi swung his knife to block, but his vision blurred, and he felt a sharp, cold pain in his chest, as if all his strength had been drained away in an instant.

The ring-pommel sword in his hand clattered to the ground, his eyes bulged, staring intently at the burly man who seemed like a god, a gurgling sound coming from his throat, before he collapsed from his horse, kicking up a cloud of dust.

The commander-in-chief is dead! The central army banner, which was just inches away, was swept in half by Guan Yu's backhand spear! The earthen yellow banner that read "Heaven is dead" crashed to the ground!

At the same time, Liu Bei saw that Guan Yu had successfully led his cavalry to disrupt the enemy's front line and directly attack the central army, and knew that the time for a general offensive had arrived.

"All troops! Charge!"

He pointed his long sword forward, and the drums and horns of the central army sounded in unison, their sound shaking heaven and earth.

The hundreds of Han infantrymen, advancing steadily like a forest, led by generals such as Wang Kai and Li Zheng, shouted in unison, brandished their spears and swords, and crushed the main force of the Yellow Turban army, which was already beginning to collapse, like a landslide and a tsunami!

Their target was the core members of the Yellow Turban Army who had been scattered by the fleeing soldiers but were still trying to resist.

Almost simultaneously with the infantry's general offensive, another elite force led by Zhang Fei, according to prior planning, suddenly turned around and fiercely cut into the weakest part of the Yellow Turban army's formation, the rear guard and flank, where the elderly, women, and children were gathered and had almost no combat power!

Iron cavalry galloped forward, their blades flashing like snow. The already panicked elderly, women, and children were thrown into chaos by this sudden attack, crying out for their parents and fleeing for their lives.

Their collapse, like the last straw, completely crushed the remaining organization of the Yellow Turban Army. Panic, like a wildfire, swept across the entire battlefield from back to front.

Guan Yu had previously killed a general and seized a flag, which was trampled by cavalry.

In the center was Liu Bei's infantry, a formidable force that swept in with overwhelming force;

Then Zhang Fei launched a surprise attack, driving the old and weak back to their own lines.

A combination of orthodox and unorthodox tactics, a pincer attack from three sides!

Having lost its commander and with its core elite forces routed in a single blow, the Yellow Turban army was no longer able to mount any effective resistance against the Han army's well-organized and unparalleled offensive.

The routed soldiers at the front crashed into the rear, causing the elderly and weak to scatter in panic. The flanks were also attacked, and the entire army instantly descended into a hysterical collapse.

The more than 6,000 people, a vast, earth-yellow-colored crowd, collapsed in less than half an hour.

Those who died from being trampled to death, those who were chased and killed by the Han army, and those who drowned in the river were countless. The fields were littered with corpses, and the Peach River was stained red with their blood.

The Han army won a great victory!
