Ice and Fire: Conquering the World Starting from the Wall
Chapter 16 History and Drama
Nemo responded to Tormund's taunt with a fierce look, but when he saw Lynn extend his hand, he still steadily handed the sword to him.
Lynn drew the sword halfway out, revealing the dark, flowing patterns on its narrow blade. Once all eyes were drawn to it, Lynn began to slowly recount its history.
"It is not the Firelord's Blade, but one of the two clan swords of House Targaryen, named 'Dark Sisters.' It was forged from dragonsteel (there was no word 'Valerian' in the Old Language; it corresponds to 'dragonsteel' in the Old Language of the First Men) and had four famous wielders."
"The first is Queen of Visenia, the sister and wife of Aegon the Conqueror. She herself is a valiant warrior, whose swordsmanship is even superior to Aegon's."
She has a famous story: after a failed assassination attempt, in order to persuade Aegon the Conqueror to establish a standing guard, Visenya suddenly drew the Dark Sisters and swiftly slashed the king's face before the royal guards could react.
She used this to demonstrate that the king needed better protection, directly leading to the creation of the legendary Kingsguard.
"The second is Prince Damon, the 'Wandering Prince' from the 'Dance of the Dragons' era."
After Visenia's death, the sword changed hands several times, eventually being given to his sister Rhaenia by Jaeharis I, the "King of the Centenarians," before passing to Damon.
Damon and the Dark Sisters went through many battles together, including the brutal Battle of the Stone Steps, but their most glorious moment came in the final duel at the Battle of God's Eye Lake.
Prince Damon leaped from the back of his dragon, the Bloodworm Korakshu, thousands of feet in the air, onto his opponent's dragon. Then, wielding the Dark Sisters, he pierced the intact eye of his opponent, Prince One-Eyed, killing him instantly. Both men and their dragons perished together.
Years later, when Prince Imond's remains were found at the bottom of the lake, the sword was still deeply embedded in his eye socket.
"The third is Aemon, the 'Dragon Knight,' who is hailed as the greatest knight in history. In his time, this sword represented the pinnacle of chivalry: 'Swearing courage, declaring justice, and being determined to protect the weak, women, and the innocent.'"
"All three of them have the surname Targaryen."
Lynn paused after speaking, then drew his sword completely:
"And the last holder, the 'Blood Raven Duke' Brynden Rivers, who possessed a thousand and one eyes. He served as prime minister to two kings as a royal illegitimate son, effectively ruling the Seven Kingdoms for decades. He had a vast intelligence network spanning the Seven Kingdoms and even across the Narrow Sea. He quelled the Blackfire Rebellion three times, for which he bore the infamy of patricide."
Finally, in order to uphold the legitimacy of House Targaryen and the peace of the kingdom, he sacrificed his personal honor and broke his oath, beheading the Blackfyremen who had promised to protect his life. He was ultimately sentenced to exile at the Wall and became Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.
Throughout his long life, he once aptly summarized himself with the following statement: "I loved a brother, hated a brother, and longed for a woman."
As Lynn recounted the names and stories of those who had once shone brightly in Westeros, the tent fell silent.
Although many of them had never heard of these names, Lynn's rhythmic tone and the historical weight behind these stories still moved them.
As is well known, the wild man has no history, only a few stories passed down orally, and most of them have been distorted over time.
Seeing that everyone was still savoring the moment and no one spoke for a long time, Lynn took the initiative to break the silence.
"So, Tormund, the 'Chicken Eater',"
He said:
"If you want to see it for yourself, then wipe the oil off your hands and don't get my new sword hilt dirty."
Upon seeing the legendary weapon handed to him, Tormund stood up almost awkwardly.
He wore a silly grin, glancing around at the others as if worried that his clumsiness would be discovered, while vigorously rubbing his hands on his clothes.
But his clothes weren't exactly clean either; after wiping them for a long time, it didn't seem to make much of a difference. In the end, Var saved him by giving him a clean piece of linen.
Tormund accepted it with a forced smile, then wrapped the hilt in linen and examined it carefully.
"It's as light as a stick!"
Tormund looked shocked and waved it back and forth a few times like a child playing with his beloved stick.
Is it sharp?
"It can be broken with a breath."
Lynn replied.
Tormund was probably hearing this for the first time, as were the others, and it took them a while to process it.
He muttered as he plucked a few white hairs from his beard and placed them on the blade, but before he could even blow on them, the hairs broke in two due to the slight tremor.
The sword was too light, and Tormund hadn't gotten used to the feel of it yet, so he couldn't hold it steady.
"O gods!"
He let out a groan:
"It would be easier for it to split my head open than to split a dry tree branch."
The "Crow Hunter" beside him sneered, "It's common knowledge that the sharper a sword is, the easier it is to break."
Lynn said calmly, "It's forged with dragonfire and magic, so it's virtually impervious to wear."
Upon hearing this, Tormund turned to Afuin with a "whoosh":
"Keep sharpening that old, broken sword of yours all day. Lift it up, and we'll see who's stronger!"
A flash of annoyance crossed Avin's face, but before he could react, Tormund had already swung his sword at him unreasonably.
Caught off guard, Afu quickly raised his sword to parry. The two swords clashed, producing a piercing metallic clang.
Startled by the sound, Qi Xue suddenly stood up and let out an even more piercing scream.
After achieving his goal, Tormund abruptly took two steps back, anticipating a possible counterattack from the crows. He then lifted the Dark Sisters swords to examine them, finding the blades undamaged. He then looked at Afuin's...
"Ha! Crow hunter, what do you say now?"
He shouted, and at that moment everyone noticed a finger-deep nick in Afuin's sword.
But Afin was already enraged. He stood up angrily and attacked Tormund with his sword.
Just as the two were about to start fighting, Mans stopped them with an angry voice.
"Enough! No one can draw their sword in front of my pregnant wife! This is the tent of the King of the Frontier!"
The two stopped immediately.
"Tormond, get out! I've had enough of your rudeness."
Mans angrily denounced his "loyal" Tormund, then turned to "Raven Hunter":
"Afuin, you should also go patrol and scout the Great Wall!"
After the two were kicked out of the tent, Var and her pet Jar also wisely left.
Mans strummed the harp in his hands with a headache, while his wife Dana came up behind him and gently rubbed his forehead.
He let out a helpless sigh for Lynn:
"As you can see, I lead a bunch of undisciplined, immoral, and lawless barbarians, which is why I desperately need the support of the Thane."
Lynn thought to himself, "As expected of the King of the Frontier, he can even steer the conversation toward testing the Seren people's position."
If it weren't for the palpable murderous intent in Raven's eyes, he would have almost thought it was a pre-rehearsed drama by Mans.
Of course, even so, this possibility cannot be ruled out.
Mans may have instructed Tormund to provoke a conflict, but perhaps even Mans himself is unsure how things will unfold.
So Lynn didn't respond, but instead casually wiped the hilt of the sword that Tormund had touched: despite the layer of linen in between, his fastidiousness prompted him to symbolically wipe it again.
Mans probably didn't expect that this mysterious young man who suddenly appeared could be so calm.
He pushed his pregnant wife's hand away with some frustration and said in an unprecedentedly sincere tone:
"Lynn, the 'Star Child,' let's have an honest talk."
"You brought a dragon into my tent and recounted a moving story about a dragonflight sword with great emotion, so... may I assume that you are an exiled Targaryen, preparing to recreate the story of Aegon the Conqueror with the help of the Free People?"
