Ice and Fire: Conquering the World Starting from the Wall
Chapter 53 Surprise Attack
Dennis took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger.
"We did keep in touch, but Carter hasn't replied a single word since he learned about the talks. You know, we've never gotten along."
(The Mellist family of Seafront City and the Iron Islands are separated by Ironborn Bay. The Ironborn frequently raid the islands, and the two sides are constantly at war, making them natural enemies. Therefore, Dennis and Carter Parker, who is of Ironborn descent, are hostile to each other.)
"Furthermore, we have reached an agreement with the 'Star Child' from Ancient Valyria, agreeing to recognize him as king and maintain peace between the two sides."
Mans laughed heartily after hearing this:
"Ancient Valyria? What a brilliant idea! It seems 'Severed Hand' has offered you quite a few suggestions. Excellent, this is good for everyone, a true king! Your Majesty Lynn!"
After Mans finished speaking, his expression suddenly changed, and he drew his sword, pointing it at Dennis's chest:
"Is this your sincerity, Your Excellency Melister?"
Did my former brothers in black think they could catch us off guard by launching a sneak attack during negotiations?
The next moment, everyone heard the thunderous sound of horses' hooves.
Looking into the distance, they saw a cavalry force of forty or fifty men charging out of the treeline and heading towards them. They were wearing black cloaks with silver chainmail underneath.
They're Rangers!
Seeing this, the four giants roared and swung their giant hammers. One of them almost hit the Thane warrior next to them. The Thane warriors cursed and dodged the giants, lined up in a row, and stacked their heavy wooden shields, which were half a person high, in pairs to form a shield wall.
"No! I didn't arrange it!"
Dennis argued loudly, squinting as he looked closely. Although he was old, his eyesight seemed quite good.
"It's Bowen Marsh! He's injured his head, it's bandaged! He's been against negotiations, but not many people agree with him, so he lost the vote."①
The person leading the charge did indeed have bandages wrapped around his head.
Mans was skeptical of this statement, clearly still holding a sliver of trust in Dennis's personal character, but what happened next shattered the fragile balance.
"For the Night's Watch!"
Suddenly, one of Dennis's henchmen pulled a dagger from his sleeve and lunged at Lynn while shouting slogans.
But his movements were too slow, and his hands and feet seemed to be trembling. Lynn quickly drew the Dark Sisters sword and severed half of his arm with a backhand strike.
Nemo realized he had failed in his duty and roared as he slammed the assassin away. Before the attacker could even land, Bloodthirst roared and followed up, biting the attacker's neck and swinging it wildly.
Lynn had possessed the Bloodthirst before and knew the explosive power contained within its seemingly slender body.
Sure enough, a sound of bones breaking rang out, and the Night Watchman who had launched the sneak attack had his neck bitten off by Bloody Cry.
It flung its head into the air and then spewed out a burst of blazing white flame, instantly turning the head into a lump of charcoal.
Upon seeing the charred remains that had shattered into several pieces upon landing, Dennis's other follower was so frightened that he quickly raised his hands to indicate that he knew nothing about it, but this action only provoked Qi Xue.
It crawled toward him.
With just one roar, the Night Watchman was overwhelmed by fear and fell to his knees with a thud.
Lynn raised his hand to stop Qi Xue, while Dennis looked firmly into Lynn's eyes.
"It wasn't me," he said, emphasizing each word. "I had no idea."
Lynn had reason to believe him that if Dennis wanted to carry out the assassination, there were far better opportunities in the tent, where they were sitting very close.
"Draw your sword and prove yourself!"
Lynn said in a deep voice.
Dennis gritted his teeth, grabbed his trembling follower and shoved the sword into his hand. The two then walked to the front of the Thane shield formation, facing their own comrades' cavalry charge.
Fortunately, the forests had been so heavily logged by the Freemen that the Rangers had to start their charge from a great distance, giving the Freemen camp ample time to react.
When the rangers were less than fifty yards from the tent, Hamma's brother, Halke, led a cavalry force of less than twenty men and finally caught up, charging towards the enemy who outnumbered them twice as many.
"Long live the free people! Long live the children of the stars!"
Halke shouted loudly in the seconds before the impact.
What followed was a brutal collision of flesh and blood, the shouts of men and horses mingling together, the dull thuds of impact like drumsticks violently striking rotten leather.
The impact sent people flying into the air, and blood spurted out ten feet high. Lynn couldn't imagine anyone surviving such a brutal collision.
But he soon saw Halke rise from the midst of a jumble of men and horses, swinging his axe to smash a ranger who was also trying to get up back to the ground.
The Free People's cavalry had the advantage of using lances, even though they were only made of wood, which were much better than the Rangers who were only equipped with longswords. As a result, they fought to a draw in a round of clashes.
After all, the Night's Watch Rangers weren't exactly heavy cavalry chargeers. Without plate armor and horse armor, they had no advantage in a frontal assault except for their numbers.
A dozen or so Rangers, taking advantage of their numbers, bypassed the frontal Rangers and attempted to continue their charge, but they were met head-on by the giants who had caught up with them. Some of them swung their hammers, while others used their bare bodies to withstand the warhorses, and in an instant, half of them were overthrown.
The remaining rangers, still on horseback, saw the impenetrable shield formation blocking their path and, knowing they had no chance of success, fled back in panic.
Lynn deeply regretted not bringing the white oak longbow with him.
Seeing that the threat was gone, he ordered the Thane to join the encirclement and annihilation of the fallen rangers. Many of the riders who had fallen but were not dead had lost either their hands or legs, and what awaited them was a massacre.
Lynn glanced at the scene and realized that only four or five Free Clan cavalrymen were still able to get up and fight.
All of this happened in a very short period of time.
Lynn looked at Sir Dennis, who was standing still and pale-faced, and believed that he was indeed unaware of the raid.
His actions just now have proven his innocence.
"You'd better pray to your seven gods that the man with the severed hand hasn't been killed by these people; he's the only reason I'm willing to accept your surrender!"
Lynn angrily said to Dennis, only then did he begin to feel a sense of fear.
It's hard to understand the feeling of dozens of cavalry charging at you without experiencing it firsthand. You know they're coming for you, and their only goal is to take your life.
At that moment, even with the shields of the Thane, the protection of giants, and even the presence of dragons, one could not completely guarantee their safety.
No wonder there's never a shortage of cavalry-centric theorists in this world.
Lynn, who had transformed his fear into rage, was about to join the battle and make his first kill on a living person when another burst of horn calls rang out from the north.
What's in the North? White Walkers?
Do the White Walkers blow horns?
Lynn paused for a moment, then quickly dismissed the absurd idea from his mind.
"Varamir!"
Lynn shouted sternly.
At this moment, "Seven-Shaped Man" Valamir was controlling his three wolves and shadow lynx to reap heads. He only reacted after Lynn called out to him and quickly made his eagle flap its wings and take flight.
