Chapter 49 A Cat Falls from the Sky!
There was someone standing behind Estelle without her noticing.
He wore a tight-fitting black bodysuit, covered by a black cloak. White cat ears peeked out from the hood, and his light blue vertical pupils stared coldly at the back of Estella's neck.
It's Audrey!
Chu Sheng lay on the ground, completely dumbfounded.
Why is this cat here?
Estella's body stiffened by the bedside, the thin knife piercing through her chest, grayish-white viscous fluid dripping down uncontrollably.
Audrey gripped the knife in both hands, her shoulders heaving slightly. She had rushed here, her cloak covered in scratches, and a faint bloodstain on the side of her face.
"You're right," she whispered behind Estelle's ear. "There won't be any more miracles this time."
She twisted the knife handle sharply!
Arthur seized the opportunity and swept his holy sword out!
Dozens of silver threads snapped simultaneously, exploding into silver dust all over the ground. The white-skirted maids who had been holding Ella backed away at the same time, stiffly clutching their necks.
Ella immediately broke free, pounced on all fours to Chu Sheng's side, and grabbed him, pulling him behind her: "Chu Sheng! The cat's here!"
"I can see." Chu Sheng coughed twice, his voice hoarse. "I'm just mute, not blind."
Estelle looked down at the tip of the knife in her chest and smiled: "Your Majesty Audrey."
She slowly turned her head, a slight movement stirring deep within her pupils: "You arrived faster than I expected."
Audrey didn't answer, but pulled out the knife and stabbed again, swoosh swoosh swoosh!
The second stab pierced Estella's heart, the third stabbed into the back of her head, but just as the fourth stab was about to fall, the first wound on Estella's chest began to heal.
"It's no use," Esta whispered. "You can never learn."
Audrey's pupils contracted. Before she could even draw her knife, Estádio's hand was already raised, and silver threads began to wrap around Audrey's neck.
Just as the silver thread was about to touch her throat, a muffled thud came from above everyone's heads.
"Thump!"
A thin crack appeared in the ceiling of the bedroom, and Estella was stunned, raising her head.
"Thump."
The crack widened, and wood chips fell in a flurry.
"boom!"
The entire vine-wood ceiling was forcibly broken open from the outside!
She was a cat-woman assassin with black panther fur, her face covered by a black veil, and six short swords hanging at her waist. She landed without making a sound, flicking her tail in the air before lowering her body steadily.
Just as Esta was about to raise her hand, the black panther cat-man crossed his twin blades and plunged them directly into the hollows of her shoulders.
"Don't move." Her voice was crisp and clear.
The second cat-person dangled upside down from the hole. This cat-person had gray-blue fur, hooked her feet on the beams, and hung in mid-air, holding two thin steel spikes in her hands. Without even touching the ground, she flicked her wrist, and the two steel spikes pierced the back of Estella's hand, pinning her raised hand to the wall.
Third place, fourth place, fifth place, the ceiling exploded one after another, and the cat-man assassins broke through the ceiling one after another!
Some tumbled down, stepping on splinters of wood, their short knives grazing Audrey's ear before piercing Estella's knee; others slid in along drooping vines, three black crossbow bolts already piercing Estella's throat mid-air; and one orange cat-man crashed through the roof, rolled on the ground, grabbed Estella's ankles with his claws, and with an axe coiled around his tail, severed both her legs.
Their movements were too fast; Chu Sheng only saw a flurry of cat tails waving wildly before Estádio was already completely overwhelmed and unable to defend himself.
Esta's expression changed. Her wounds had barely closed an inch before the next knife plunged two inches deeper. Grayish-white sap splattered everywhere, burning shallow craters into the floor.
Audrey finally drew her knife, took a half step forward, stepped on the hem of Estella's dress, gripped the hilt with both hands, and stabbed again at Estella's back.
Estella's body began to twist, her beautiful face slowly melted into ash, her long hair fell out strand by strand, and finally turned into a churning mass of grayish-white matter.
"You can't kill me..." Her voice changed, becoming like the gurgling sound of boiling mud, "The sacred tree is already..."
Audrey plunged a knife into her mouth, tearing her vocal cords apart: "Shut up, you're so noisy."
The other cat-people pounced simultaneously, swords flashing. Estella's body collapsed, grayish-white mud gushing from the holes in her body, more and more flowing out, until finally she collapsed to the ground with a thud.
She tried to move, and a bulge the size of a human face appeared on the puddle of ash on the ground. Her light golden eyes opened and stared intently at Amber on the bed.
"Your Majesty..." Audrey stepped down.
"Smack."
The mud twitched slightly and then fell silent.
The black leopard cat-woman crouched down and poked at the mud with the tip of her knife, but there was no reaction. She changed her knife and continued poking, but still no reaction.
The gray-blue cat-man took out a small porcelain bottle and poured a few drops of clear liquid onto the plaster. A string of tiny bubbles rose to the surface of the plaster, but quickly stopped.
"Your Majesty," the black panther cat-man looked up, "is dead."
Silence fell outside the palace, and the white-clad fairies outside stopped chanting. They stood there, their smiles slowly fading, their eyes vacant as they lowered their heads.
Chu Sheng stared at the pile of mortar for a long time before finally uttering, "Is this what a professional team is like?"
Arthur, leaning on his holy sword, looked at Audrey: "What are you doing here?"
Audrey glanced back at her, then looked at Amber on the bed, sheathed her sword, and bowed slightly to the Queen: "I sent you a letter."
"I received it." Amber gave a wry smile, "But as you can see, I really can't reply."
"I guessed it." Audrey's ears twitched slightly. "After the carrier pigeon from Cat Territory is delivered to the Sacred Tree Forest, according to royal etiquette, the Queen should reply."
"But the carrier pigeon hasn't returned." She looked at the grime on the ground. "Besides, the cat people haven't sent any messages to the cat territory from their post station in the royal court for a long time."
Audrey took a roll of map from her cloak and unfolded it by the bedside. The map marked the hunting trails, valleys, inns, and several temporary camps on the outskirts of the Sacred Tree Forest, and was covered with many cat paw-shaped markings.
"After I became suspicious, I immediately sent messages to the cat-man hunters, scouts, herbalists around the Sacred Tree Forest, as well as a few old guys who have been working as guides on the outskirts for many years."
The black leopard cat-man squatted beside the plaster, wiping his knife: "My mother was one of those old guys."
Audrey glanced at her, and the black panther cat-man immediately shut up and continued wiping his knife.
Audrey pointed to a red mark on the map: "The first reply said that the royal court has closed the road. But that hunting trail has never been closed before; even the grey elves of the Grey Domain occasionally travel on it."
She then pointed to the second place: "The second reply said that many elves on the outskirts have gone missing. Most of those who have gone missing are messengers, healers, and old priests who can contact the royal court."
"And then?" Arthur pressed.
"Later, I sent the nearest cat-person scouts on a risky expedition into the forest," Audrey said. "They didn't enter the royal court; they only saw many white-dressed elves on the outskirts. These elves didn't react at all when they saw the cat-people."
Silverleaf frowned: "Elves don't really pay much attention to cat people, do they?"
"Normal elves will warn us not to climb trees when they see cat people," Audrey said calmly. "Some with bad tempers will even throw fruit at us."
The black leopard cat-man raised his hand: "Yes, I got hit by it when I was a kid, and it hit me very accurately."
