Chapter 83 A treacherous commoner is trying to harm my horse!
"Your Majesty, are you inside?"
Chu Sheng sat up abruptly from the bed.
Amber sat down next to him and even had the leisure to look down at Chu Sheng's expression: "Chu Sheng, you look terrible."
Chu Sheng almost muted her on the spot: "Your Majesty, please don't call me that at a time like this."
After Chu Sheng finished speaking, there was another sound outside the door.
"Chu Sheng, open the door."
Chu Sheng subconsciously looked towards the window.
Amber reached out and slowly straightened his clothes.
"Shall I drive it?" Amber asked softly.
"No way!" Chu Sheng quickly refused, "If you go to work the night watch, things will get complicated!"
"So what are you planning to say?"
"Let's say we're discussing... the follow-up plans for the Sacred Tree Free Trade Market."
Amber blinked: "In your bed?"
Outside the door, Arthur's voice sounded somewhat impatient: "Chu Sheng, I know His Majesty is inside, but I don't have time to worry about that right now. Something's happened at the stables!"
"The stable? Didn't the celestial horse throw a tantrum?" Chu Sheng immediately became serious.
"Hmm," Arthur said through the doorway, "It wasn't Pegasus throwing a tantrum; someone sabotaged it!"
Chu Sheng quickly got out of bed, not even caring that his boots were on backwards, and threw on his coat before going to open the door.
As soon as the door opened, Arthur stood in the hallway. She first saw Chu Sheng, and then saw Amber sitting on the edge of the bed.
Her gaze fell on Amber's not-so-dressed outer robe, then on Chu Sheng's messy hair and unbuttoned clothes.
Chu Sheng's heart immediately started beating at double speed!
Amber stood up nonchalantly and nodded slightly: "You're here."
Arthur's lips twitched slightly: "Your Majesty has quite the refined taste. Come with me to the stables first."
Chu Sheng almost thought he had misheard. Was it really over just like that?
Arthur turned to leave, but stopped after taking two steps: "Chu Sheng, the buttons."
Chu Sheng looked down and saw that three of the buttons on his clothes were fastened incorrectly.
The three of them walked down the corridor.
The female boss was dozing at the front desk. When she saw Arthur, she immediately stood up and bowed. When her gaze swept over Chu Sheng and Amber, she wisely lowered her head again.
Amber walked beside Chu Sheng, her white dress and outer robe neatly arranged. She possessed an innate aura of elegance and nobility. Just moments ago, she had been teasing Chu Sheng to the point of exhaustion in the room, but once outside, she transformed into a graceful and noble elven queen.
That's quite a contrast.
Chu Sheng couldn't help but glance at her.
Amber smiled. "Are you still nervous?"
"I don't think I'll ever forget the look Arthur gave me just now," Chu Sheng muttered.
"It was a small matter to begin with," Amber said softly. "She cares about you, that's why she looked at you that way."
Chu Sheng was momentarily speechless, and Arthur, who was in front of him, paused for a moment.
She must have heard it.
The stables in the backyard were much larger than those in ordinary inns, after all, this was an official post station on the imperial post road, used for knights, messengers, caravans and noble carriages to change and rest.
A separate area was partitioned off at the very back of the stable, where the celestial horses were kept.
Pegasus were much taller than the other horses in the stable, their wings folded at their sides like two capes. They stood inside the enclosure, their front hooves pawing the ground restlessly, puffs of white breath coming from their nostrils.
The grooms nearby were pale-faced, and none of them dared to approach. A thick wooden beam had been broken, looking as if it had been smashed by a wild horse.
Arthur held the piece of wood up to Chu Sheng's face: "Look here."
Chu Sheng leaned closer and discovered a thin black line inside the wood shards, running along the grain of the wood.
"What is this?" He didn't quite understand.
"The wooden fence was damaged beforehand," Arthur said seriously. "A single bump from a Pegasus would break the fence."
Chu Sheng was shocked: "So what happened just now wasn't an accident! Who? Who wanted to harm me?"
Arthur patted Pegasus on the neck: "Pegasus is trained; it won't run into a fence for no reason."
Chu Sheng looked at the celestial horse, and when it saw Arthur approaching, it lowered its head and rubbed against her palm.
This doesn't look like someone going crazy at all.
"Someone wants to harm it?" Chu Sheng asked, somewhat puzzled.
Arthur reached out and touched Pegasus's forehead. Holy light flowed from her palm, and Pegasus's breathing gradually stabilized. "It wouldn't be necessary to harm it. I suspect that someone is trying to slow down our journey to the center of the Empire."
Amber walked to the broken railing and gently ran her hand across the wood.
The green light seeped into the wood, and the black line suddenly curled up as if it had been burned.
"It moved?" Chu Sheng asked, his eyes sharp.
Amber walked around the stable. Sometimes she would stop to look at the roof beams; sometimes she would place her palms on the wood, as if listening to the wood speak.
Chu Sheng didn't dare disturb her, so he could only follow Arthur to see the scene.
Arthur has already ordered the groom and the night patrol guards to be questioned separately.
A young coachman stood in the corner, his legs trembling.
Arthur looked at him: "You said you didn't leave the stable after midnight."
The stable boy's face turned pale: "I...I just went to the kitchen to get some food."
"Who told you to go?"
"There's no one here, I'm hungry."
Arthur walked up to him and looked down at him.
"You left your post while on duty and didn't check the stables when you returned. Something was mixed into the fodder the pterosaurs were eating, and someone tampered with the fence beforehand. Do you know what crime this would constitute if the Empire investigated?"
The coachman's lips trembled, and he suddenly knelt down with a thud.
"I really don't know! Someone slipped me two silver coins and said there would be hot soup in the kitchen tonight, and asked me to go get him a bowl. I thought it would only be a little while, so I went. When I came back, it was fine, but not long after, it suddenly started banging against the fence."
Arthur's eyes narrowed: "What did the person who gave you the silver coins look like?"
"Didn't see clearly, was wearing a cloak."
"Male or female?"
"It sounds like a man... or it could be a woman, I really couldn't tell."
"Where are the silver coins?"
The coachman hurriedly pulled two silver coins from his pouch and handed them over with trembling hands.
Arthur didn't take it with his hands, but wrapped it in a cloth, glanced at it, and frowned slightly: "This is just a regular imperial silver coin, and it's quite new."
Chu Sheng had been watching for a while, then hurriedly asked, "No clues?"
"I can't find it." Arthur shook his head, somewhat regretfully. "It's too clean."
Amber returned at that moment, with a small black line in her palm.
The thing was trapped by the power of the sacred tree, and it was still twitching slightly inside.
Chu Sheng felt a chill run down his spine and took half a step back: "What is this thing?"
"Found it under the manger," Amber said. "This is probably what agitated the Pegasus, making it restless and ramming the fence."
Chu Sheng looked at her; An Bowen's expression was somewhat complicated.
"Your Majesty, what have you discovered?" He sensed something was wrong and stepped forward to ask in a low voice.
Amber hesitated for a moment, carefully sensing with the power of the sacred tree before speaking, "I think I've seen something similar before."
Arthur's eyes lit up: "Where?"
"The Sacred Tree Forest," Amber said slowly, "three years ago."
The black book magician who followed Veronica!
Chu Sheng immediately recalled: "You mean, that black book magician?"
