Chapter 12 Preparing to Make a Bow

I set the alarm clock to the correct time when I bought it. I got home at 15:45 PM, and my mom went to Tianfan again.

When Lin Xue saw them return, her eyes kept glancing at the bag, but what she said was:

"Brothers, have you eaten yet? The food is in the pot, I'll go heat it up for you."

"I've eaten, Xiaoxue. Could you bring me the teapot? I'm dying of thirst."

Lin Xue quickly ran to get the teapot and two enamel cups. In those days, every household would brew a large pot of water, and if it became too weak, they would add tea leaves and brew it again.

Lin Chuan quite likes this kind of water heater; the water temperature is adjustable, so he doesn't have to worry about burning his mouth.

"Here, have some soda. Don't break the bottle, you can exchange it for money."

After finishing his water, Lin Chuan took off the sack, revealing the orange soda underneath. Lin Xue took a sip, her eyes crinkling with happiness.

"Brother, you should drink too."

Looking at the bottle handed to him, Lin Chuan took a small sip, and Lin Xue ran over to hand it to Lin Feng.

Lin Xue drank half a bottle of soda, then refused to drink any more, saying she wanted to save it for her mother.

"Xiaoxue, finish your drink. There's still some left. And from now on, when you drink or eat, don't share with others. You have to keep yours separate, okay?"

Lin Xue hummed in agreement, her eyes drawn to the candies Lin Chuan had taken out. Lin Chuan pulled out a handful and placed them on the table, peeled one for himself, and gestured for them to eat. Then he went inside to fetch a basin of water.

"Xiaoxue, let me wash your hands and face, and let me see you change your clothes."

"Here you are, bro! Did you buy me new clothes?"

Lin Chuan quickly wiped Lin Xue's face, neck, and hands, then took out some clothes for her to try on.

"Wow, whose little princess is this? She's so beautiful!"

When the little girl came out again, she was wearing that pale yellow dress. She looked a bit awkward, and after being praised by Lin Chuan, she blushed and covered her face, stomping her feet.

After the three siblings laughed and joked for a while, Lin Xue tried on every outfit, and Lin Feng couldn't resist either, so he ran in and tried on one too.

But he insisted on giving one set to Lin Chuan and didn't want two sets.

"I bought this according to your instructions, but I can't wear it. My clothes aren't torn, so I can still wear them."

"No, can you try it on first? Otherwise, I don't want it."

Unable to resist his younger brother's insistence, Lin Chuan tried on a shirt, which was indeed a bit too small.

He is one year older than Lin Feng, 17 years old, and currently about 1.67 meters tall, while Lin Feng is only about 1.6 meters tall.

But Lin Chuan knew that his younger brother would grow to 1.78 meters tall, while he himself would only grow to 1.73 meters tall.

This height was actually considered tall for that era, but by later standards, he would be considered half-crippled. It's unclear who set that standard.

"Alright, change your clothes and wash them, you can wear them again tomorrow. I'm going up the mountain."

"I want to go too."

"Brother, count me in."

"I'm just going to cut down a tree, I'll be right back. You two stay home and do the laundry. Don't eat too many snacks, or you won't be able to eat dinner."

After giving his instructions, Lin Chuan picked up his machete and went out. His purpose in going up the mountain was to find materials to make a bow.

Lin Chuan had carefully analyzed the situation and realized that if he wanted to raise his skill level to 20 points and reach the level that the system would include in his skill points, he couldn't focus on skills with a large base.

For example, cooking skills are too broad. His cooking tastes good, but even if he had a lifetime, he wouldn't dare say that he could master cooking skills to a 20-point level.

He focused on some simple skills, such as archery, which is similar to a slingshot. If you practice well, you can even kill wild boars.

Fortunately, in his previous life, Lin Chuan was obsessed with hunting novels. He was not only good at using a slingshot, but although he couldn't shoot arrows, he had practiced by following the videos.

Lin Chuan first cut down two oak trees, also called quince, which are excellent wood for making bows, and then he cut down a bamboo tree.

Wooden bows need to be air-dried. In the early stages of practicing accuracy, you can use bamboo bows first. On the way back, Lin Chuan cut down dozens of thin bamboo stalks, which are good materials for making arrows.

Lin Chuan left quickly this time. When he got home, his mother hadn't returned yet. New clothes he had bought, including his mother's, were hanging out to dry in the yard.

The brother and sister were plucking chicken feathers. Lin Chuan had kept one of the wild chickens they had hunted in the county town, intending to stew it with the turtle to make soup. Plain turtle soup was indeed not very tasty.

After the chicken was prepared, Lin Chuan went inside and handed two pounds of snacks to Lin Feng:

"Go to the supply and marketing cooperative and buy five catties of tung oil and three bars of sulfur soap. When you return the car, give this to Aunt Lan."

Lin Feng responded and went without asking why. Lin Chuan rubbed Lin Xue's head and began processing the materials.

Wooden bows need to be shaved. After shaving, place them in the kitchen where the temperature is higher, and they will dry quickly in the shade. Bamboo bows are simpler to make.

Carve it into a suitable shape, cut notches at both ends, and pull it into an arc shape with a rope. It will be even more powerful if you air-dry it or bake it.

Lin Chuan didn't care about power or wasting time; his goal was simply to get the shot out.

Bamboo bows were easy to make, but wooden bows were a delicate craft. Before he could finish, Lin Feng returned.

Lin Chuan put down what he was doing and turned to start fiddling with the bowstring. A wooden bow couldn't be made in a day or two, so for now, he should focus on making the bamboo bow and practicing archery until he reached 20 points.

Regardless of the type of bow, a bowstring is essential, and Lin Chuan knows a method of twisting a bowstring with hemp thread.

There was hemp thread at home, which my mother used to sew layered soles and quilts. Lin Chuan asked Lin Feng to help him twist the five strands of hemp thread into one, and the tighter the twist, the better.

After finishing one bamboo tube, Lin Chuan shaved a tube, put the bowstring inside, and then poured tung oil to submerge the bowstring.

"Heat it over a fire for a while until the tung oil melts, but don't burn it for too long."

"Brother, what are you doing?"

"When making bowstrings, tung oil can increase the toughness of hemp, making it less prone to breakage."

"Brother, you know so much."

Lin Feng looked at Lin Chuan with admiration. Although he couldn't understand what Lin Chuan was saying, he felt that Lin Chuan was very impressive.

Lin Chuan smiled but didn't say anything. He started rubbing again, this time with nine strands combined into one, which was for wooden bows and the strings were thicker.

Soaking the bowstring in tung oil is a simplified version. The real method requires soaking it in a mixture of tung oil and animal blood. It's uncertain when animal blood will be available, but the bowstring must be prepared in advance, otherwise there won't be enough time to prepare it after you've hunted the prey.

Making nine strands is several times more difficult than making five strands. Before Lin Chuan could finish, his mother came home.

My mother was taken aback when she saw the new clothes hanging all over the yard:

"Where did all these clothes come from? You can buy them for yourselves. Why are you buying them for me? I already have clothes to wear."

"When did you get back? Did you sell all the wild boar? And what are you doing here?"

"Mom, you have so many questions. Which one should I answer first? Guess how much money we made from selling them."

"Do you have 550?" Seeing Lin Chuan nod, Wang Xiuxia smiled and began to mutter:

"Why are you buying so many clothes for me? I already have clothes to wear. Don't waste the money you have left, you still need to pay tuition in two months when school starts."

"Mom, your clothes are all old. Consider this a windfall and buy some new clothes that you can wear for a long time."

A single sentence seemed to trigger something in Wang Xiuxia's mind; her eyes reddened, and she appeared on the verge of tears. Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Lin Feng weakly said:

"Mom, my brother didn't waste money; he didn't even buy himself any clothes."
