Chapter 39 Going to the Countryside
Ni Youlin stumbled and rushed out, almost tripping and falling on the way.
Her pitiful figure made Chen Rang unable to hold back his emotions.
Anyone who isn't completely stupid can figure out that Ni Youlin will definitely suffer when she goes back to the village.
Those villagers buried her grandfather behind her back, didn't they have any excuses to answer her questions? Besides, they kindly helped her with her grandfather's funeral arrangements, so where do you find a reason to question them?
A simple "You're still young, we were just trying to help you, but you turned around and blamed us" is enough to leave you speechless.
right?
Not to mention that Ni Youlin is a timid girl who is not good at speaking and has a small heart. How could she possibly be a match for those old men and women in the village?
Seeing that she was about to run onto the road, Chen Rang quickly called out to her.
"Wait a moment!"
Ni Youlin stopped and turned around, her eyes brimming with tears and her fear undisguised. Her gaze remained timid, like that of a kitten, clearly indicating that she had no idea what to do next.
So Chen Rang sighed and waved to her from the shop entrance.
"Wait a few minutes, I'll get ready and come with you. Also, you should at least change your clothes, wear some plain pants and tie a black strip of cloth around your arm. You need to show your attitude properly from the start."
Chen Rang was very troubled, feeling that this girl seemed to know nothing at all.
If she had acted more solemnly and respectfully, people wouldn't have made things too difficult for her, considering that her grandfather had just died, right? The person is dead, and no matter how much the villagers despise Ni Youlin's mother, they wouldn't stop her from visiting the grave.
"oh."
Ni Youlin obediently walked back.
She looked much more relaxed, as if she had finally found her anchor.
Chen Rang refilled the cat's food and changed its water. After checking on the female silver shaded cat, he came out to find Ni Youlin still standing there. He couldn't help but urge her to hurry up and change her clothes at school, and that they would meet at the main road in front of Chaiwan Market later.
Seeing her turn and leave as if she had breathed a sigh of relief, Chen Rang suspected that she wasn't ignorant; rather, she dared not do anything without orders.
If that's the case, then it means she must have had a very difficult time with her biological father as well.
In the village, there were just rumors and accusations that she and her mother had brought shame to the village. But her biological father probably didn't treat her as a daughter; instead, he saw her as an eyesore.
No wonder she cried and questioned herself about why she was born and why she was alive; it was because she couldn't find any hope or expectation at all.
Only animals that don't care about those things will not show her any disdain; they won't criticize her or give her any bad looks.
"That's pretty tragic."
Shrugging, Chen Rang hung the "Leaving" sign on the glass door. As he was about to close the door, Dou Dou led several other cats over in a swarm, trying to follow him upstairs to continue sleeping on his bed.
Chen Rang ruthlessly drove them all into the cat house room and closed the door to the cubicle to prevent them from causing trouble in the work area at night.
Ignoring the meows of the cats, some pleading and some threatening, he went back upstairs to change his clothes and wash his face.
After thinking about it, I checked the location of nearby funeral supply stores on my phone and decided to buy the flowers and paper money here to avoid trouble later.
He then planned to tell Ni Youlin, but found that he didn't have her contact information. After waiting for two minutes at the entrance of Chai Wan Market, feeling that Ni Youlin needed a little more time, Chen Rang walked alone towards the funeral supplies shop.
After walking more than two hundred meters, Chen Rang arrived at the entrance of a relatively quiet alley. He quickly spotted two shops next to each other. He described what he needed to do to the old woman running the shop, and she soon recommended many things he would need.
Paper money, gold coins, and various small items burned for the deceased filled two large black bags to the brim.
Chen Rang walked back with some difficulty, suddenly realizing that he should actually learn to drive and buy a car. Previously, he had considered that his customers were all in the city, and parking would be inconvenient when he drove to their shops; but now, thinking about it, as an adult, he realized he would need a car for quite a few reasons.
Putting everything else aside, every time I asked Li Shiwei out to dinner, I would call a taxi, which seemed a bit odd.
If Li Shiwei's colleagues and friends saw this, they might think he was a gigolo!
So Chen quickly added learning to drive and buying a car to his plans.
Back at Chai Wan Market, Ni Youlin had indeed arrived. The silly girl, not seeing Chen Rang, anxiously looked around, seemingly worried that Chen Rang had abandoned her.
When she saw Chen Rang carrying two large bags, her eyes immediately lit up with delight.
It's just like a little pet; without its owner, it doesn't know how to move.
Chen Rang glanced at her outfit: black trousers and a black long-sleeved shirt, which looked alright. But then he noticed the black patterned handkerchief she was clutching in her hand, and he was slightly speechless.
So he took out a black linen armband, which is called a mourning band, from the bag and handed it to her. Chen Rang then took out his phone to make a call.
"Hey! Zhang, are you asleep? I just need you to take me on a short trip. Stop dawdling, you won't even do anything to make money, get out here right now!"
With just two simple words, I put my phone away.
Ni Youlin stared intently at Chen Rang, wondering if he would be scolded for talking to people like that.
But a short while later, a slightly chubby and short young man ran out of the alley.
Upon seeing Chen Rang from afar, his first thought was to complain. But upon seeing the beautiful girl standing next to Chen Rang, he instantly became obedient, his face showing an inquisitive look as he secretly glanced at her out of the corner of his eye.
"Brother Chen Rang, where are you going so late?"
While greeting Chen Rang, Zhang Jun stole glances at Ni Youlin. He wanted to greet the beautiful woman as well, but he was too embarrassed; so he could only rub his hands together, subtly revealing the car keys hanging from his waist.
"A beat-up Toyota, what's there to brag about! You can drive it for ride-hailing, but you expect to use it to pick up girls?"
Chen Rang mentally scoffed.
He didn't have time to chat with this kid. After all, according to Ni Youlin, the place they were going to was still more than half an hour away! It was already getting dark. If they didn't go early and come back early, were they going to spend the night there?
Urged on by him, Zhang Jun reluctantly went to the market parking lot and quickly drove out in a white Corolla.
The car is a used one, and its condition isn't particularly good. But it's still economical and practical for using as a ride-hailing vehicle.
While electric vehicles are definitely the best option for ride-hailing services given current gas prices, most people living in this area have limited financial means. Used electric vehicles are too expensive, and new ones are unaffordable.
Zhang Jun's family sells fish cakes at Chai Wan Market. Business is only slightly better during the two months around Chinese New Year. Otherwise, it's just enough to make a living. Making fish cakes is not easy; the whole family has to pitch in.
So after graduating from high school, Zhang Jun worked part-time with his family in the fish cake and meatball business, and also drove for ride-hailing services in his spare time.
This means he can support himself and not cause trouble for his family.
"Brother, what are we doing going to the countryside so late at night?"
Seeing that Chen Rang had sent Ni Youlin to the back seat while he himself sat in the passenger seat, Zhang Jun felt a little regretful.
He grew up eating leftover meat and cakes from his family's business, which caused him to develop early and become short and slightly overweight. Although he drives his own car, he always gives the impression of being a chauffeur, not a private car owner.
Chen Rang glanced back at Ni Youlin and the two large black bags she was holding in her arms and refused to put in the trunk, signaling her to hurry up and give him the address so as not to waste time.
Ni Youlin then honestly told the truth.
Zhang Jun was envious of her obedient appearance, wondering why he couldn't find such a pretty and obedient girl.
He recalled the out-of-town girl he had met on a blind date the day before; she was not only overweight but also had high standards. Compared to Ni Youlin, Zhang Jun felt a mix of envy and disappointment. He figured that a city girl with such good manners would never be interested in him.
Looking at Chen Rang again, she felt even more resentful.
After setting the location on the navigation, Zhang Jun stepped on the gas and quickly set off.
He noticed that Chen Rang and Ni Youlin didn't interact with each other along the way, which puzzled him. But then he thought about it again and felt a little smug.
After all, she was too good for such a beautiful girl, but she couldn't let that guy surnamed Chen get her!
Why should I? Right?
I just don't know what the relationship is between these two. Chen Rang is just a veterinarian, how come he always manages to meet some beautiful and nice girls!
He was somewhat jealous.
