Chapter 68 Chen Rang's Guilty Feelings
"Are you coming over later? No need, I can come find you if I need anything."
Chen Rang was stunned for a moment, and then cold sweat broke out on his back. After replying to the message, he nervously glanced at Ni Youlin, feeling an inexplicable urge to hide the girl away.
"Um?"
Seemingly noticing Chen Rang's gaze, Ni Youlin raised her head. She stared at him blankly, then, seeing that Chen Rang had no intention of communicating, she lowered her head again.
At this moment, apart from being a little silly, she was not much different from an ordinary internet-addicted girl.
"It's still about that cat cafe! The owner has been extradited, but the money he swindled hasn't been fully recovered. After interrogation, we determined that he was just a lackey doing orders, and there's a group of people behind him. That group is very cunning and well-hidden; we can't catch them right now. However, we've obtained another crucial clue, and we need your help with that."
Li Shiwei's tone was somewhat serious, and she rejected Chen Rang's attempts to dissuade her without hesitation.
"Is there someone else behind this?"
Chen Rang raised an eyebrow, his expression gradually becoming serious. He was a man who understood the importance of things, and naturally wouldn't joke with Li Shiwei about serious matters.
However, he was a little confused about Li Shiwei's request for his help.
He didn't have a particularly strong memory of that cat café. He was more familiar with the supervisor and two waiters than the owner. The police station confirmed that the three were simply hired by the cat café and had no connection to the fraud ring.
"They were cats from the cat cafe! Before the incident, there were over twenty cats in the cat cafe, right? You took in seven of them, and then one died there; so the question is, what happened to the remaining dozen or twenty cats?"
Li Shiwei asked a question that Chen Rang hadn't expected.
Yes! The money that has been defrauded can be quickly transferred and laundered, but what about the cats?
Whether they are dead or alive, it's impossible for them to leave no trace. There's even another possibility: since the cat cafe owner went to such lengths to take them away, it means those cats still have value in continuing to live.
Chen Rang wanted to ask more questions, but Li Shiwei didn't have time to answer. She said they would discuss the details when they arrived, but she needed his help this time.
Chen Rang nodded in agreement.
He looked up at Ni Youlin, somewhat worried that something awkward might happen when the two met later.
To be honest, he didn't want the two queens to meet the king. It wasn't that he had any secrets he was hiding from them that he couldn't let them know, but he inexplicably felt guilty whenever he thought about it, as if he had done something wrong.
"What do you mean I'm guilty?"
Chen Rang quickly shook his head, trying to banish the bad thoughts.
Even so, it's still a good thing that Li Shiwei and Ni Youlin can avoid meeting, saving him from having to explain all sorts of nonsense.
"Um... Ni Youlin, do you have any plans for this afternoon?"
"arrange?"
Ni Youlin looked up again, thought for a moment, and raised the game console in her hand, meaning that she would play this game here this afternoon.
"..."
Chen Rang rolled his eyes, feeling like he had shot himself in the foot.
But he couldn't possibly tell Ni Youlin that another girl was coming to his house soon and asked her to leave temporarily. Given the girl's fragile mentality, he didn't know how depressed she would become if he said that.
"So... what should we do next?"
Chen Rang pinched his chin.
"If you're busy this afternoon, I can stay and watch the door for you."
Ni Youlin wasn't stupid after all. Seeing Chen Rang's troubled look, she thought for a moment and pointed to the ceiling, saying, "Or I can go to the third floor. I definitely won't bother you."
"Then why don't you go and rest on the third floor?"
Chen Rang nodded quickly.
Ni Youlin glanced at Chen Rang, but said nothing more. Instead, she obediently stood up, took the keys and game console charger from Chen Rang, lowered her head, and slowly went out, turning and entering the side staircase.
Chen Rang remained seated, while Grandpa Silver and Little Mankikang, who had been lying in the sun by the door, quickly got up and chased after Ni Youlin. Even Little Ragdoll and Big Blue Cat seemed tempted, but after glancing at Chen Rang, they obediently lay back down.
For some reason, Chen Rang felt a little annoyed.
When other patients came to him for treatment, he seemed somewhat distracted. Fortunately, his professional skills were solid enough that he didn't make any mistakes, though he was patiently persuaded by his regular customers for quite some time.
This made him blush and quickly bring him back to his senses.
Putting aside his unspeakable worries, Chen Rang focused on his work and saw patients. He didn't consider what state Ni Youlin was in on the third floor, and acted as if nothing had happened, patiently returning to his normal state.
Before we knew it, it was past three in the afternoon.
A familiar police car drove down the main road, and Li Shiwei and another familiar policeman got out and went straight to the clinic entrance.
Not seeing Chen Rang in the lobby, Li Shiwei went in to look for him and found him in a small cubicle next door, bathing a customer's dog. It was a large, wet golden retriever, sitting obediently in the bathtub without moving, letting Chen Rang rub it, and even closing its eyes contentedly.
The dog's owner was smoking outside the door and was taken aback when he saw two policemen come in.
However, seeing that the two people were just standing quietly inside the house waiting without making a sound, he didn't think much of it and obediently stayed outside, keeping quiet and continuing to smoke.
"Is it him?"
The middle-aged policeman who came with Li Shiwei sized up Chen Rang for a while, then silently winked at Li Shiwei.
"It's him, you have a problem with that?"
Li Shiwei glanced at him irritably, but remained silent.
The two waited quietly for more than ten minutes. Even the golden retriever's owner was getting a little anxious, but they remained unmoved. They even gestured to stop the golden retriever's owner from calling Chen Rang, patiently waiting for him to finish his work.
Chen Rang had already seen Li Shiwei.
But he was pressed for time, and if he went to call the police officer first and left the dog soaking wet, it could easily get sick; so he had to patiently speed up his work and finish what he was doing as soon as possible.
Another five or six minutes passed while I was busy with this.
It's quite remarkable that a mere veterinarian at a run-down pet clinic made two police officers wait for over twenty minutes. Chen Rang dried the Golden Retriever off, patted its rump, and herded it into the drying box.
"I'm sorry to have taken up your time."
Wiping his hands with a towel, Chen Rang sincerely apologized to the two policemen.
"We should be apologizing for bothering you so abruptly. Oh, my name is Sun Zhengdong, the captain of the case-handling team at the Moon Bay Police Station. I'm in charge of the Wang Zichen cat cafe fraud case. There are some things I'd like to ask you about regarding this case."
The middle-aged policeman named Sun Zhengdong smiled and explained his purpose to Chen Rang.
Li Shiwei remained silent, only smiling as she observed Chen Rang, whose apron was covered in dog hair. Seeing a single golden hair stuck to Chen Rang's chin, she couldn't help but chuckle as she walked over and removed it.
The originally serious atmosphere immediately became much more relaxed thanks to her actions.
Chen Rang nodded his thanks to Li Shiwei, then led the two to sit on the sofa in the hall. After pouring each of them a glass of water, he earnestly asked how he could help.
Sun Zhengdong didn't mince words and went straight to the point: "Do you still remember the cats in the cat cafe? Especially those whose whereabouts are currently unknown, do you remember what breed they were and what they looked like? If they had any features that were different from other cats, please tell me."
"cat?"
Chen Rang paused for a moment, but quickly recovered and asked curiously, "Is the police planning to use those missing cats to find clues about the cat cafe owner and related personnel? But shouldn't the supervisor and two other employees at the cat cafe know more about this than I do?"
"Of course, this kind of thing needs to be verified from multiple sources. And that foreman you mentioned..."
Sun Zhengdong gave a wry smile and shook his head, saying, "I don't know if it's because he's irresponsible or if he doesn't want to get too involved, but that person didn't describe much of the situation to us. He said that he usually only handles customer matters, and taking care of the cats isn't his responsibility."
Chen Rang nodded and asked no further questions.
In his memory, the foreman wasn't particularly diligent. He would either hog a computer to play games or chat and joke with customers; he wasn't very responsible.
As for the other two...
