Chapter 74 Ni Youlin's Changes
Upon seeing Chen Rang approach, Ni Youlin's expression changed drastically.
The smile on her face vanished instantly. After glancing cautiously at Chen Rang, she quickly put down the small doll and stood there stiffly without moving.
Her body and face were soaking wet, making her look very disheveled.
Looking at the cats next to her, so relaxed and innocent, especially how they lined up in an orderly fashion and were so well-behaved, someone who didn't understand would probably think that these things had nothing to do with them at all, as if Ni Youlin's disheveled state was entirely her own fault.
No one ever bullied her; she was just too stupid to do things properly.
Chen Rang even suspected that Ni Youlin herself thought the same way. Otherwise, she wouldn't have put on such a guilty look, as if she was afraid of being criticized, or perhaps afraid that she would be kicked out by Chen Rang because she was useless.
"Meow?"
The little doll was having a great time playing with Ni Youlin, but now that she was ignoring it, it looked up at her with some confusion and started calling out.
Seeing that Ni Youlin did not respond, it came closer and rubbed against Ni Youlin's calf a couple of times.
Even so, Ni Youlin remained stiff all over. She waited motionless for Chen Rang's verdict, and upon closer inspection, one could even see that her body was trembling slightly.
Chen could tell that the girl was currently in a state of complete insecurity.
Chen Rang dragged her away from the Ni family villa, and from that day forward, she was officially homeless. Even back at the clinic, Chen Rang made no promises to her. She took his request to bathe the cat as a test, and then felt she hadn't done a good job.
She's probably terrified right now.
"I feel like I've brought back a nuisance. I'll have to figure out how to comfort her. Or maybe, she doesn't even need my comforting..."
Chen Rang turned to look at the cats in the room; they seemed to be having a lot of fun playing with Ni Youlin. Perhaps, the only one putting pressure on Ni Youlin was him.
"Aww!"
Upon noticing Chen Rang's gaze, DouDou let out an innocent-looking meow, seemingly trying to demonstrate its obedience. Even though its fur was completely soaked, it sat obediently and motionless, as if it hadn't done anything wrong.
"Shut up!"
Chen Rang glared at Dou Dou with annoyance. How could he not know how cunning this guy was?
Ni Youlin's disheveled state was definitely caused by DouDou! Of all the cats in the house, this guy is the most unruly. Of course, he's also the smartest, and very good at feigning innocence.
Too lazy to pay attention to Dou Dou's counter-accusation, Chen Rang looked at Ni Youlin again, and said with a wry smile, "I just didn't want you to overthink things, so I gave you something to do. How did you get yourself into this state? If they don't behave, just leave them aside and don't wash them! Getting all wet is one thing, but what if they scratch you? Also, since I brought you back, I definitely won't abandon you. Don't worry about that."
"sorry……"
Ni Youlin lowered her head and apologized softly, neither making excuses nor shifting the blame.
She certainly believed Chen Rang's promise, but that didn't stop her from feeling frustrated with her own incompetence. She felt like a useless person who only caused trouble for others, managing to make such a mess of something as simple as giving the cat a bath.
Seeing Ni Youlin's expression, Chen Rang understood the situation and changed his tone after thinking for a moment.
"Actually... bathing cats is never an easy task, but you did it so quickly and well. You know, I usually spend more than half an hour bathing just one cat, enduring their fuss and irritability. But I've only been gone for less than an hour, and you've already bathed five cats. This efficiency... is simply unbelievable. Do they never struggle in your hands? That's amazing."
As Chen Rang spoke, he gave Ni Youlin a thumbs up.
He wasn't exaggerating in this regard; he genuinely thought Ni Youlin was very capable at her work. Although her work efficiency sometimes resulted in her being exhausted, at least in terms of results, she wasn't as incompetent as she imagined.
"..."
Ni Youlin raised her head and blinked silently.
She was quite surprised by Chen Rang's attitude and what he said, and it didn't sound like sarcasm, but rather his true feelings from the bottom of his heart?
Ni Youlin could hardly believe it.
She didn't think she was as good as Chen Rang described, but that didn't affect her mood, which finally became more cheerful.
The psychological impact of someone who can help is completely different from that of someone who only causes trouble. Ni Youlin's worries and helplessness quickly dissipated, and a slight smile appeared on her lips before she quickly suppressed it again.
"Go upstairs and take a shower! You're all soaked; be careful not to catch a cold."
Chen Rang waved his hand, indicating that Ni Youlin could go and rest. The main reason was that the girl's clothes were soaked and clinging to her body, which was rather indecent and attracted attention.
If we leave her in the store, wouldn't that allow outsiders to take advantage of her?
"oh."
Ni Youlin nodded and obediently followed instructions. She hadn't yet realized that she was almost completely exposed, and only looked regretfully at the big blue cat and the American Shorthair tabby cat, as she hadn't finished bathing them yet.
Chen Rang waved his hand.
"Anyway, this task is assigned to you. You can wash them tomorrow."
"good!"
Ni Youlin's eyes lit up; she really liked this feeling of being needed. It made her feel like she wasn't a useless person, that she had value and a place where she could be needed.
Ignoring her disheveled state, Ni Youlin turned around excitedly and ran away.
Chen Rang stared at her back; her thin, soaked clothes clung to her body, revealing her exquisite curves. The full, rounded shape made his throat feel dry, so he quickly turned his head away, no longer admiring her, and coughed once to resume his gentlemanly demeanor.
He naturally didn't see the blush on Ni Youlin's face and the secret joy she dared not let anyone see.
Some subtle changes have occurred in this girl.
Chen Rang has not yet discovered these things.
He could only sigh and reluctantly take on the trouble left behind by Ni Youlin.
When bathing a cat, efficiency is not the only factor to consider.
The drying box in the store can only hold one cat at a time, so the other cats have to wait in line outside. Given the cats' health, keeping their bodies damp for extended periods can easily make them sick.
Animals' physical condition can never be compared to that of humans. Especially pet cats; their physical health might even be worse than that of stray cats. Even a simple cold can trigger serious respiratory problems.
So even though the weather and temperature were quite nice today, Chen Rang still had to hurry up and clean them up.
Since the dryer is unusable at this point, we have to resort to the most primitive method.
Time was of the essence, so Chen Rang hurriedly ran upstairs to get the hair dryer. Ni Youlin had broken it last time, but upon inspection, it turned out that the fuse had simply overheated and automatically tripped. Once it cooled down, it worked perfectly again.
"Now I just hope these guys will behave themselves and not treat using a hairdryer like torture. It's true that those things are a bit noisy, but surely once or twice isn't unbearable?"
As Chen Rang ran, he muttered to himself, highly doubting the obedience of his cats.
He had no other choice; he couldn't just put them outside in the sun, could he? On the surface, this might seem like a quick way to dry them, but cats are not heat-tolerant animals, and doing so could easily damage their skin.
Like dogs, cats don't have sweat glands. While dogs know to pant to cool down, silly cats just silently endure the sun. If they're not careful, they can easily get sick from the sun.
Cats get sick when they're cold, and they get sick when they're hot; they're really quite fragile creatures.
So, raising a cat is never a simple matter.
Chen Rang grumbled as he pulled out his keys and opened the door. He vaguely heard some noises upstairs, but he didn't have time to pay attention. He had just grabbed the hairdryer from the bathroom when he came out and saw Ni Youlin standing quietly at the front door, blocking his way out.
"What's up?"
Chen Rang raised an eyebrow and noticed that Ni Youlin was still soaking wet, her clothes clinging to her body. Although the two of them had indeed been right behind each other, why was she running down here instead of taking a shower?
He suddenly realized that this girl was just as difficult to please as the cats downstairs.
"that……"
Ni Youlin's lips twitched, but she couldn't speak for a moment. Only when she saw Chen Rang's impatient expression did she quickly bow deeply.
"Thank you!"
